Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

"yet" as in you know for a fact that there will be a steam key? Please tell me it's so!

Well the humble widget for it does say it will come with a Steam key.

Also, noticed the Steam page for the game still has an hour to go until it is on sale, so I imagine that is when the keys will be added to our humble libraries (or maybe sometime between now and then even).

Thanks, that makes sense. You calmed me down quite a bit there. I just took for granted there would be a Steam key without checking before i bought the game. Luckily it turned out there would be eventually.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but has there been any word of this releasing on other platforms? I'm not begging; I just want to know before I buy it on my Wii U or 3DS. This looks really great!

Nothing solid at this point. They said they were going to "work on it", but nothing more substantial than that. They currently have obligations to send out the backer rewards, so that is their current priority.
This game is perfect besides one really annoying thing.

B button is confirm. WHY.
It's whatever your assigned jump button is. It bothers me too.

It's a Sophie's choice then of the abominable reverse jump button or sometimes saying no a bunch. This needs a patch! I get why this would fly on the PC version and I'm sure people are used to it on Microsoft platforms/multiplatform and US Sony games but this...is just wrong.

So tempted to double dip. I really want it on Wii U, but I am going out of town for the weekend so I wouldn't mind it on the 3DS too. May do it...

Honestly it might be worth double dipping, it's a great game.

I think I'll hold out though and see if the 3DS version gets a sale later in the year.

Even though it further complicated the controls customization menu, this is exactly why I made Confirm and Cancel separately map-able buttons in Volgarr the Viking. Glad to hear I wasn't wasting my time! Hopefully Shovel Knight will add that option at some point.

Its especially weird if confirm defaults to the B button on the Nintendo platforms though. On XBox the Confirm button is traditionally the bottom-most button, but on Nintendo platforms Confirm is usually the right-most button. I could see it being that way for PC though since PC usually uses 360 controllers where A is the bottom-most button.

Yes. Playing on the 3DS, confirm is B and cancel is A, it's really super weird because A is still jump and B is attack, which is my preferred control scheme for gameplay, but the confirmation!!! Fffffffffff. Lol.

I just finished it. Loved it. Looooooved it. It's not a perfect game, and I think the main thing I think it could've used is a more solid death penalty, but in the end I don't think that affected me very much considering my policy on destroying checkpoints. I felt decently punished for failing that way.

Ikaruga not winning Steam community sale has really turned me off from the whole thing seeing as the rest of the sales are pretty meh today IMO, so I guess I'll use the saved money from dailies and snag Shovel Knight on 3DS :D

Hoooooly shit. I just beat the first level (on 3DS) and this game is blowing me away. The looks, the sounds, the gameplay are on spot on. Seriously, the music is phenomenal. And fully customizable controls on a handheld game?! Whaaaat?! And the first boss battle in the Plains was sooo cool. I actually died once. My only wish is that shovel hopping required more skill. Other than that I'm loving what I've played. Too bad my 3DS died :(

I didn't know about this game until about 1 hour ago, and now I patiently await the release on Steam, because it looks fucking awesome.

Wait wait, A is jump and B is attack? Can you change that? I like that just fine for NES/GB layout, but for the "diamond" button configuration I'm used to it being the same as the Mario games - B is jump and Y is attack. Is confirm always B or does it change as you swap around your attack and jump buttons?

I've never done this, nor felt the need to. I have only replayed stages to find stuff I missed the first time through.

Yeah there's an achievement for that!

Cool, thanks. I had a pretty skewed idea of what this game actually is, then. For some reason I had it in my head that there was XP and gear and a bit of a focus on that (I don't know why), but it sounds like the shop items are maybe more akin to the screw items in Mega Man 9 with a few permanent upgrades thrown in.

I'll grab it and see how it goes.

Errrrr. Actually, I got it mixed up. I'm looking at the 3DS now, and B is jump and A is attack. Cancel is A and B is accept. Basically it's using a Xbox style control scheme. Anyway, the gameplay controls are right, but the menu/interface controls are wrong!

That bugs the shit outta me too, lol
Fixed... by mapping Jump to A and Attack to B.

I prefer the Wii Remote, though trying with the Game Pad's not so bad. I don't think the pro controller will work out for me because Super Metroid style is better there, and that wrecks hell with confirm/cancel.

EDIT: Also by proxy this probably means I could swallow the setup better on PC with an Xbox or PS3/4 controller, but not on a Nintendo platform/controller.

Yeah they probably used the PC version as the base where that control scheme makes total sense (for 360 controllers) but should have swapped Confirm and Cancel for the Nintendo platforms. Surprised Nintendo themselves didn't say something about this, I figured it was a standardization they would demand (A is always confirm on Nintendo platform games).

For the Wii-U/3DS version they should have either locked A to confirm and B to cancel no matter what you mapped jump and attack to (but kept it the way it is now for the PC version where it maps Confirm and Cancel to Jump and Attack since on PC you never know what controller the player might be using), OR made Confirm and Cancel separate map-able actions from Jump and Attack. IMHO.

Still if that's the only big complaint so far, game sounds awesome! I haven't decided if I'd rather get it on 3DS or Wii-U yet.

I really like how the
Bard in the Village comments on the music.
(early game spoilerish)

Boy do I love Metacritic reviews.

Having a great time with it on 3DS. Probably going to double dip with the PC version when it goes on sale.

Starting to get the sense from the various impressions the game (in the first playthrough) is too easy to a fault, which is ok if the NG+ is much more balanced for the people who fly through every level without a hitch. Curious to hear how people find the difficultly of NG+, if it's more what they would have expected the first playthrough to be balanced like or not.

Edit: Then again, I actually died on the first boss once lol, so I will probably find the balance to be pretty good myself.

I'm wrapping up my NG+ playthrough now. The difficulty is very welcoming. Most notable is that there are far fewer checkpoints and more damage taken by enemies. I think it works well and I'm not sure it would have been as acceptable to newcomers if this was the original default difficulty.
