Having grown up on NES, SNES, and PSX graphics, I'll never forget how shocked I was by even early PS2 graphics. I honestly thought graphics couldn't get any better, especially where MGS2 was concerned.

Now I thought Ground Zeroes was drop dead gorgeous. There were a few graphical quirks, like Chico's legs clipping Big Boss when you're carrying him. The Phantom Pain is looking even better than Ground Zeroes in a lot of ways. What confuses me is that I've read quite a lot of genuine complaints about some of these minor quirks. It's particularly baffling when diehard Metal Gear fans come off as utterly pissed.

Holy shit

TPP setting the fucking standard for this entire generation right from the beginning, open world game at 1080p and runs at 60fps shiieeeeeeettt!! your move rest of the gaming world. KojiPro just fucking killing it.

It looks so smooth I want to cry. Fox Engine is a fucking beast.

I wonder what it's really capable of when they get rid of cross gen shackles in a couple of years..But for now it's looking damn good, love the fact that it's 60fps. Makes everything seem better.

Glorious.

This is perfection.

that 1080p/60fps footage looks absolutely stunning. hopefully konami now understands that gamers want to see game footage that looks as good as the game being displayed on their screens straight from hardware.

looks fantastically fluid and crisp, even if some of the graphical imperfections are highlighted by the increased clarity.

You seem really excited.

It's impressive, but they need to sort out the pop-in. Seeing grass and stuff materialize out of thin air a few yards ahead of the player is disappointing and somewhat distracting, but actual guards appearing and disappearing from view (as they constantly do in Ground Zeroes) is actually detrimental to gameplay, imo... and it needs to be sorted out.

He should do a tech demo or something. Apart from cross gen I'm glad for the decisions they've made with this game in terms of the scope and the performance, but I'm also curious what the Fox Engine is capable of visually without all that baggage. If it was just an old school MGS designed for PS4 it would probably look insane.

got a question. the pegi 18 rating on the video, is that just for the video... or is that for the phantom pain itself? how does this stuff work?

I'm ok with the pop-in as long as the game holds a steady 60fps. It's not something that bothers me much.

of course I'm excited, game looks phenomenal, a true next-gen experience. When was the last time you played a open world stealth game that runs at 60fps on a console? plus the gameplay video was incredible.

3+ (previously tagged) guards materializing out of thin air next to an AA turret you're only a dozen or so yards from doesn't bother you?

Very tolerant.

The game is not finished yet, Kojima tweeted before they showed the gameplay vid that it's in early stage. He didn't even want to show it yet but he did it for the fans and the press previews were very positive.

Imo Kojima deserves big praise for showing this. Normally behind closed doors E3 presentations never get released a few weeks after the event. For example we'll never see The Witcher 3 45 minute demo they showed.

I'm speaking mainly of Ground Zeroes which I bought with money. And enjoyed immensely I should add.

I was just saying... the cosmetic pop-in stuff is one thing, but I really hope they address the frequent pop-in of guards that is rife in GZ.

Didn't really see that in the demo, but tweet KojiPro and they'll take it to heart.

i wouldn't say it's rife. but it is a problem. the other day i knocked out 4 guards in the same area. dragged them together, stuck C4 on one of their backs, and BOOOM. just before i blew it though, i noticed there was only 3 guards laying down. i ran back over there a minute later and the fourth guard was laying there knocked out. those kinds of things just cannot happen in TPP.

Mileage may vary on guard-pop... but my playstyle is to recon from afar and then execute the pre-planned route. So I run into quite a lot of it in my binoculars. The up-close guard-pop is a bit more rare, but it still happens too often to overlook. Honestly, at this point I have every guard location memorized, so whatever... but in a bigger game?

Anyway, I hope they sort it out... is all I'm saying. At least before I crown Fox Engine king of the world.

well, some of that seems to be fixed already. when BB is reconning from the hill there marking enemies, they look like they are pretty far away. like--GZ-startpoint to that huge main guard tower--far

Well, I don't wanna be that guy..but I think that we never saw that kind of pop-in in any of the GZ gameplay demos, yet it was still there. It doesn't bother me too much, except when it's the guards that are popping in front of me. Although that only happened to me twice, and I play the damn thing nearly every day.

As for the environmental pop-in, as distracting as it might be sometimes, is to be expected. This game is huge! If they find a way to cut it a bit - without impacting the framerate - i'm all for it. But I don't know if they can. I love Red Dead Redemption and I usually replay it every year. This year I did it just to compare both games, since they share the same kind of setting. And even Rockstar, the king of open world games, had some troubles with streaming assets. It's not unusual to see things poppin in front of me, from bushes to horses, shadows and whatnot. I didn't see this before.

Maybe I've grown used to the problem and I'm starting to actively look for it, thus I'm seeing it more, but RDR is not a lot better in that regard. I don't know how GZ runs on a ps3, but the ps4 version surely does a good job even when compared to RDR. And if anyone knows anything about streaming assets in an open world game with zero visible loadings, is Rockstar..

My props to Gamersyde/BlimBlim and KojiPro for releasing a video of such high quality. On my TV it pretty much looks like it's coming straight off a PS4.

Apple TV/Chromecast?

btw, I just downloaded the 6.4GB and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! This looks STUNNING! And Kojima said he wasn't ready to show it! lol

Kojima just retweeted this:

Playable co-op sex sequence confirmed?! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I thought you were joking at first, then I went through his twitter. What the shit? I googled it and found out it's actually a movie, not a porno. For a second there I thought he actually retweeted a porn release tweet...

Oh man:

I do think Kojima has gotten more mature with his writing, but if this were said by IGN, it'd be the new "Oscar winner writing" meme.

Haha yeah

Honestly it almost just feels like some standard Konami PR statements with a random filmmakers' name attached

Still nice to know Refn is a fan. Now that's two directors (him and GDT) I wouldn't mind making the movie (which probably isn't ever going to be made anyway)

Lars Von Trier has made several movies, like Antichrist, Melancholia, and Dogville. He's controversial in that some of his works are liked by some and really disliked by others.

I wonder what Koji thought of it.

I'd really prefer that they don't compare Kojima's writing to any of those directors...seriously.

Avi Arad:
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a stunning presentation. The trailer is full of symbolism and philosophy that we come to expect from Mr. Kojima. Although cleverly disguising the story and therefore making the trailer enticing, Mr. Kojima makes sure to include enough visuals to make us comfortable that we are in for a new Metal Gear experience. For me, the sight of the Diamond Dogs and Snake putting the ashes on his face with multiple urns make me believe that a lot of history is going to be dealt with. If one listens carefully to the amazing song, Nuclear by Mike Oldfield, it is fantastic story telling that gives us enough of a window to know we are about to embark on another emotional masterpiece by Mr. Kojima. Kiefer Sutherland as the voice of Snake is just fantastic while raising the drama, and makes us long to play the game.

Nicolas Winding Refn:
Watching the trailers for MGSV makes you wonder if the spirits of Dostoyevsky, Stanley Kubrick, and Caravaggio entered Hideo Kojima's body because, using the art of gaming as his canvas, he boldly goes where no one has gone before.

The trailers for Metal Gear Solid V, prove once again that Hideo Kojima is a master at portraying a wider and more complex view of human nature combined with breathtaking action sequences. A daring and bold move from one of the founders of the future of technology. With Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima has created the perfect marriage of cinematic storytelling and cutting edge gaming technology. For me, it all culminates into one word: Genius.

Guillermo del Toro:
Kojima-San remains a massive inspiration for me and METAL GEAR continues to deliver the edgy, vital, jaw-dropping world and feel that we have come to expect but it pushes the envelope every single time. It is a window into the future of the medium and its breathless narrative and artistic expansion. Amazing!

Park Chan-wook:
I have always been thinking that I want to see a film directed by Mr. Kojima, but after seeing the latest trailers for Metal Gear Solid V, I realised I was wrong.
He has actually been making films in his own way already.
Metal Gear Solid games are already films, the films of the future.

Shinya Tsukamoto:
Intense, crazy, deep Kojima world. By the time you finish this game, you should be changed into a completely new person.

Norman Reedus:
Wow! That is AMAZING!
So beautiful … So well done.
You guys created such an incredible piece of art.
