It's easy to criticize the writing but MGS is no doubt an extremely impressive series and Kojima does mindblowing work.

Oh, I'm not criticizing it at all! It really just seem like a bit hyperbole, that's all.

Heck, I loved PW and really only found flaws after they were shown and then again it didn't really bother me much, so I'm gonna adore TPP's.

i think the majority of the issues with kojima's writing come down to two things, (1) nothing's really edited, (2) translation and cultural differences.

I definitely wasn't pointing fingers; just a general statement. I'm both a fan of the story and characters in these games, and I'm also a critic of some of the goofier elements and some of the sloppy, incoherent writing in games like MGS4, Peace Walker, etc. That being said, I'm not too hard on it because they sometimes give me the real feels and I think for whatever weaknesses Kojima has as a writer, he more than makes up for it with his visual eye and ability to execute very emotional scenes.

...oh shut up, the end of MGS3 was some onion-chopping shit.

Replaying MGS3 on PCSX2, played it only once a few years ago on a PS2 and that's it. Feels like I'm playing a new game all over again and having lots of fun. Just beat The End, love that guy.

Got reminded on a couple of things - disguised Eva gets her stockings all burnt and torn up from Volgin's electroshocks, looking somewhat similar to Quiet's... guess someone likes his stockings torn up, hurr. The other thing is that I've totally forgotten about fulton extraction being mentioned in MGS3, only never really shown.

Oh, come on.

I also think the game will be great, but that is hyperbole of the highest order.

Oh man:

I do think Kojima has gotten more mature with his writing, but if this were said by IGN, it'd be the new "Oscar winner writing" meme.

I was going to post something about this earlier but didn't because of the annoying posts it could spawn.

Its been like 6 years since Kojima's last full-fledged console MGS and the storytelling in the medium has changed a lot. Thats one of the things i'm most hyped for and to see how modern games have influenced/changed his style. Judging from the trailers and GZ, it seems he's gotten better with pacing. The super long cutscenes are no more and the long codec calls (which I will kind of miss) are now done during gameplay.

edit:

LOL this could be a GAF field day with this comment.

Park Chan-wook:
Metal Gear Solid games are already films, the films of the future.

Seeing MGS V at E3 got me urging to do another Metal Gear Solid marathon. Just finished another MGS1 run. I can't remember how often I've played this game but it's still so amazing (outside of the key section and sniper finding part). I mixed it up by playing on vita. It looked quite good on original resolution.

Next up is MGS2 from the HD PS3 collection.

MGS2 is fun as hell, underrated game. Only part I hate is the Metal Gear Rays battle.
The Rays are a rush on Extreme. I loved them.

I'm currently working on another Peace Walker run and I think this is one of the best playing MGS games. I know a lot of people don't like the scaled back controls but it forces me to play so differently. I really enjoy what they did here.

It's not really when you consider who it's coming from. Having seen people walk away from Drive, Valhalla Rising and Only God Forgives with similar reactions to those who dislike MGS, I think it's safe to say that these two are cut from the same cloth.

NWR is probably the only director that could do justice to an adaptation of Metal Gear.

I think he would do good, but the only director that could do a good MGS movie? I don't suppose Alfonso Cuaron or the guys that did Winter Soldier or del Toro or or or (insert a shitload of directors here) would be cut out for it? :p

Good to see that my favorite game director and my favorite film director are bros. NWR is probably the only director that could do justice to an adaptation of Metal Gear.

Word. The two have a flair for the symbolic and bizarre methods of storytelling. Not to mention whoever NWR gets to do the lighting in his movies would probably produce the best looking Shadow Moses possible.

We can dream. :)

Would be really interesting to see an MGS adaptation by Winding Refn. I could see it being pretty abstract though, I really don't think it would resemble MGS in the typical sense. No doubt it'd be great as it's own piece though.

What would be amazing would be seeing all those filmakers create MGS short films and compile them into one collection in a similar sense to the different directors and studios working on short films compiled into one set in Batman: Gotham Knight.

That would be insaaaanely cool.

Norman Reedus could probably make a pretty good Solid Snake as well thinking about it..

Finally seen the gameplay trailer at 60fps 1080p looks incredible.

How is it possible on ps4, I'm running a titan and I bet if this ever comes to pc I'll struggle to run this at 60fps with the same eye candy... I wish it comes to the pc

I think the weakest point is the bomb diffuse portion and the bomb advisor hijacks the game narrative for too long.

In terms of narrative, Stillman (bomb advisor) and Emma (creator of GW) served as stepping stones building up to Raiden's climax as a character. Neither Stillman or Emma wanted to acknowledge their past. Raiden hid his past from himself, but eventually accepted it and moved on. All three characters ultimately had resolution with their pasts. Stillman finally admitted his leg was never broken and helped stop his lunatic protege. Emma reunited with her brother, managed to avoid drowning, and helped deliver the virus to destroy GW. Raiden defeated Solidus and becomes a new person. So really, these side stories were part of the same narrative.

Apple TV/Chromecast?

btw, I just downloaded the 6.4GB and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! This looks STUNNING! And Kojima said he wasn't ready to show it! lol

Nah, My PC is connected to my TV directly.

Wut? I bet any decent gaming rig would easily slay this game.

No. Del Toro's american movies are too pulpy, the only game in the series I'd want to see him adapt would be MG1/MG2. A younger John Carpenter could have done it, but ALAS time machines don't exist. Also maybe Takashi Miike, because Miike can adapt literally anything. I also generally have faith in Chan Wook Park but IDK. Alright, let's say that NWR is the only person who could direct an MGS movie in english.

Yes man exactly. Color grading and selective color palates are a big part of what made MGS1-3 such visually striking games. If anyone can recreate those feelings in live action it would be NWR.

Yeah man, actually it would be cool if different directors handled different games. Each game has a very different feel and very different meaning so there's no reason to have the same director remake every game.

Nicholas Winding Refn - Metal Gear Solid
Paul Thomas Anderson - Sons of Liberty
Terrence Malick - Snake Eater

Make it happen. I want 2 minute shots of trees in Snake Eater and I'm not trying to make some dumb fuckin' joke, I really do want that.

Call me crazy, but I don't want to see a live action film adaptation of MGS. Reason being is that I don't think they could do it justice. If they do it in CG where they can actually show off Liquid and Solid being twins, using classic voice actors, etc, then maybe it'll turn out great. How goofy would it look to see two Hugh Jackman's (or whomever)? One with long blonde hair and the other with short brown hair & a bandana fighting one another.

wut

Its cross gen and 60fps on a PS4. Any solid (ehem) pc would breeze this game.

I'm just in here keeping updated on this game. I really can't wait for it. I'm doing a play through of the entire series right now (4 and PW for the first time, the ones before I haven't played in like 8 years) and I'm getting hyped..er for PP. Just the motorcycle part in Act 3 of MGS4, loved seeing Big Boss again and getting all that back story filled in. It was sad though, Naked Snake/Big Boss being reduced to that...man. Sucks. Hopefully PP will fill all that in!

Edit: Thought I'm reading some strange shit in regards to Kojima. Some of the fans really take this too seriously. The ending of MGS2 was Kojima flying up his own asshole, not some genius premonition of the internet age. I prefer the character relationships to the crazy commentary (for the most part) that Kojima sometimes goes off on. 3, 4, and seemingly 5, seem to decently blend the two together, making you really care whats happening to the characters.

#2 is definitely it for me. As someone who isn't exposed to any culture from Japan, I haven't totally gotten that filtered out yet.

Yeah anything, even their own stories starring characters from MGS. Would be really interesting to see different filmmakers takes on the MGS franchise as a whole.

Hasn't an MGS movie been coming out for over 10 years now? I think there's a bigger chance of The Last Guardian being shown again than an MGS movie being made

If there's an adaptation, chances are that it will be a semi original treatment along with taking cues from the major aspects of Solid Snake arc prior the Shadow Moses scenario. They should do it like Marvel Studios by taking a load of reference points from the source and mesh them along with original concepts. Captain America 2 Winter Soldier movie is the prime example of doing this.

The way I see it, the first movie can be a mixture of MG1 and MG2SS, focusing on the relationship between Solid Snake and Big Boss, with inminent Metal Gear showdown and Snake "retiring" once he beats his father. That way, you can set up a sequel for the Shadow Moses incident by already having the core concepts in place (Snake going against his former unit, Liquid requesting Big Boss' corpse, the US developing his own Metal Gear, Les Enfant Terribles project, Ocelot playing double agent, etc etc)

Watching the E3 demo in 60fps. Looks gorgeous and I love how it's smooth as butter, just like GZ. However, the pop in with this direct feed looks pretty bad. Right after the tutorial is skipped at the beginning, there's a weird shadow glitch on the cliffs left of Ocelot and as Boss is sprinting on his horse the texture pop in is insanely noticeable. I really hope this is addressed.

yeah but it's on the game's site, like showing off. and it's not like Konami/Kojima didn't tell them to watch the video and ask them for a comment. Especially Avi Arad, the guy who told Kojima to use Keifer instead of David.

But Kojima=God or something the dude has an ego the size of the sun and yet it kinda works.
