So if Grey Fox is in the game, what kind of a person will he be? Teenager still? Does he have his ninja-like abilities even back then?
We see Quiet using some ninja-like moves in the trailer also. Maybe she's related to him in some way.
Frank will be in the game I'm thinking, he'll make our jaws drop cause of his awesomeness.

Wiki says:
"The second prequel Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (set twenty five years before Metal Gear) featured a teenage version of the character under the codename Null (ヌル Nuru?) as a masked machete-wielding assassin. Null is subjected to a secret CIA project to be the "Perfect Soldier" and recruited into the corrupt FOX unit led by Gene. During the game, Null fights with Big Boss (Naked Snake) twice. During the second fight, Big Boss realized that Null was a boy that he met four years prior in Mozambique, where the boy used his innocence as a cover to kill dozens of government soldiers with only one knife while speaking a little German, leading to him being called "Frank Jaeger" (German for "Frank Hunter") by his enemies. After defeating him, Big Boss sent Null to somewhere outside of FOX for help."

He'll be a badass soldier just like in MG1 and MG2. Perhaps more of a rookie? Portable Ops isn't technically canon since Kojima didn't direct it, so he'll likely override it.

noooooo, not dlc. make it a part of the main game.

How badass would it be if instead of a small post-credits cutscene, we actually got an abridged version of the original Metal Gear in which we play as Solid Snake, voiced by David Hayter, and we get to kill Big Boss ? Hahaha.

This idea has been floating around as speculation for a long time now, and with subtle hints from Mr.Kojima himself.

Kind of a MGS2 situation where we play as Big Boss, build up Outer Heaven towards the end of the game, and then we switch to Playing as a young Solid Snake, infiltrating everything we just built and we fight Big Boss at the end.

Full circle.

badass, yeah, but that wouldn't make sense, why switch to Solid Snake at the end? it should be Big Boss getting wrecked by Snake with you as BB.

To give the fans wanting to play as Solid Snake a bone. :P

But yes, technically an unwinnable boss battle against a young Solid Snake would be sweet.

Yeah! It would be pretty sweet to see Gray Fox in his prime, and there's no reason to believe we won't. Kojima is going to probably drop the retcon hammer on Portable Ops, entirely, and make MGSV the first on-screen meeting between Jaeger and Big Boss. That's just my guess, though, and nothing more, but there's no way we don't get ourselves a good look at the Perfect Soldier!

Don't rule this out! I think it'll happen (maybe not the Hayter bit, but if the time skip took place, it's possible). I, for sure, see this being the end game!

I think its awesome how Konami listens to their fans and gave us the gamersyde version. I watched it on my 47" and it was beautiful
I <3 gamersyde

Wasn't it confirmed canon? In any case, I don't see the point in retconning the entire game.

Is Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops canon or not?

Kojima considers this a difficult question to answer. While he did produce the game, he didn’t write the story himself, so some of the details are a bit off. The main storyline is part of the official timeline, but some of the details are not. He makes a distinction between games he only produced and games he wrote and directed as well.

Kojima Twitch interview summary: discussing Japanese gaming industry, Portable Ops canonicity, and possibility of remakes

Interview (time-stamped to 43m21s):
Hideo Kojima Twitch Interview - London 13/03/2014

Nicholas Winding Refn - Metal Gear Solid
Paul Thomas Anderson - Sons of Liberty
Terrence Malick - Snake Eater

Make it happen. I want 2 minute shots of trees in Snake Eater and I'm not trying to make some dumb fuckin' joke, I really do want that.

you're alright, man. Different order, though:

Make Snake Eater first, with an epilogue hinting at the events of PO, PW, GZ and TPP. (Zero forming the patriots and Big Boss becoming a mercenary)

Then make MGS1, with a quick prologue detailing everything you need to know about MG1. (Solid rescues Grey Fox in Outer Heaven, Grey Fox turns on him and they duke it out, Big Boss reveals that he's the leader of Outer Heaven before getting set on fire)

Then for the third movie, make it an adaptation of MGS2 but with a few elements pulled from MGS4 like Solid Snake being an old man (in the plant chapter), and Ocelot's Liquid arm bullshit being a ploy to fool the patriot AI. End the movies at the same point that Kojima originally wanted the series to end, with Raiden and Rose finding each other in the streets of manhattan.

Basically if it wasn't made by Kojima, it isn't in his canon timeline.

The terms "expanded universe" and "soft-canon" exist for situations like this. In a series like this, items in the expanded universe (Portable Ops, Metal Gear Rising) remain soft-canon until they're directly contradicted by hard-canon material, whereas hard-canon material is sacred and will always be canon even if it's contradicted by newer material.

Wonder if Kojima or Konami will pull a Disney one day.

I'm hoping the KojiPro team fixes this error in The Phantom Pain. Perhaps instead of an infinitely re-spawning weapon, the enemy tries to flee when Snake drops the weapon after the initial disarm. Regardless, the current setup ruins the immersion:

That's definitely a bug. I don't see how it "ruins immersion" unless you purposefully tried to disarm a person multiple times, which most people probably do not do.

More proof that Drive was a fluke.

You have got to be joking.

Bronson was brilliant and Only God Forgives, while it's admittedly twisted and objectionable, is sort of a filmic unicorn. The way he succeeded in telling a story through symbolic imagery and sound takes, at least my modern perception of the 7th art, and flips it on its head. And Drive was, well, Drive.

I don't understand why people try to get points by dropping these lazy sassy remarks instead of leveling proper criticism.

As per Kojima himself, the "main plot/context" of the game is 100% canon, but some details may not be.

It's not clear which "details" are not canon, though.

Probably the stuff about Null. I'd also wager that the first "Metal Gear" being deployed like an ICBM and not bipedal is probably also in the same boat.

yeah he accidentally made a movie that could be enjoyed by a mass audience instead of just a niche audience. Nice going, Refn.

So many good posts in this thread tonight, lets all be friends.

For you, it doesn't ruin the immersion. I found this bug by mere accident when testing out the game mechanics. And, well, now it bugs me. Pun intended.

Personally, and without meaning to offend your sensibilities, they seem like wildly inappropriate choices.

EDIT: I mean, they are all accomplished directors and all, but I don't think they mesh well with MGS.

That's GOTY 2015 then. Also GOTY 1984.

I love this theory. From what we've seen in the trailers and GZ are already pretty heavy so it makes sense seeing the decline of Big Boss (Project Oni/ogre) into an antagonist.

I'm also pretty hyped for MGO. The biggest problem with it for me was the pretty crazy controls. Imagining the control of GZ in a MP setting is making me salivate.

MG1/MG2 remake would be better served as full fledged game by themselves, there's so so much you could flesh out there. I really can't see MGSV's last half turning into a quick runthrough of those events, at most I see a tease of Solid Snake infiltrating Outer Heaven at the end.

I'm not sure why he chose Anderson for MGS2 (I've only seen There Will Be Blood) but all three need a strong focus on character drama, while MGS3 would need a lot of environmental shots of nature and MGS1 would need a strong consideration of lighting.

By the way, I recommend everyone in this conversation go watch Vanilla Sky immediately. It reminds me a lot of MGS2.

I think better late than never really helps out in this situation. Gamersyde keeps randomly turning to French for me.

Really? That's pretty strange as all our links inside the site should have the language hard coded (_en at the end of the url) and the site also defaults to English. Do you have a specific example of this behaviour?

Agreed, I never played the originals but I was reading up on the story recently and there's a surprising amount of plot in both games. Full remakes of both games is totally possible. Thinking about it more, an Operation Intrude N312 dlc would be a perfect opportunity to introduce a MG remake.

I'm getting excited now, fuck.

Sometimes I'll browse the site and it'll be in english, and then other times I'll go to it and it'll be in french. It's so odd. It happens the most often when I view community videos.

PTA's 'The Master' and 'Boogie Nights' are both magnificent films, but I think he is far too subtle a director for something like Metal Gear, let alone it's maddest most sprawling entry.

I've only seen Drive and Only God Forgives, so my NWR knowledge is pretty limited. He certainly has the aesthetic down, no question. I'm not sure how he'd deal with the heavy emphasis on dialogue and exposition in MGS. He also has a dream-like quality in his later works which might be better suited to MGS2, if anything. His action sequences also put a lot of heavy emphasis on singular actions to highlight violence, giving each action more weight. Not sure if that would gel well with MGS or not.

I'm not a Mallick fan at all. I thought the Thin Red Line was awful. It was painfully heavy handed with it's quasi-religious, man and nature symbolism. Personally, I wouldn't want him anywhere near MGS3. XD

/amateurfilmcritic :P

Nuts. Why does this pretentious bollocks have to come at the top of the page!

It's not so much that Anderson is a subtle director something like MG, it's that his style isn't suitable for MG's genre. In fact, I don't think he's subtle at all. PTA's films are very honest and unorthodox in modern cinema. I think he's in the forefront of modern filmmaking, along with Malick and the Coens. I don't think it would be appropriate for any director of their caliber to direct an MG film.

Anyways, I'm gonna just stop here before I tread into off topic discussions lol.

Snob :P

I absolutely agree. I meant subtle as in relative to MGS. Metal Gear is generally a phallocentric, Sci-Fi, military, soap opera and from what I've seen PTA's work tends to deal with more natural human drama (not seen TWBB), if that makes sense.

Τhat 60 fps 1080p video was amazing... the quality was exquisite, like you are playing the damn thing on your screen...

Unfortunately while it makes everything look awesome, the video also makes pop in really stand out, and once again I hope that it gets somewhat fixed in the final version.

If not eliminated, at least improve it.

You seem really excited.

It's impressive, but they need to sort out the pop-in. Seeing grass and stuff materialize out of thin air a few yards ahead of the player is disappointing and somewhat distracting, but actual guards appearing and disappearing from view (as they constantly do in Ground Zeroes) is actually detrimental to gameplay, imo... and it needs to be sorted out.

Completely agree with you.

I love the game, I love 60 fps but, surely, the pop in can be improved. Its way too much to overlook now and yes it is distracting.
