Yo, real talk. I still think about the "I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea." line Sutherland delivers. Can you imagine how potentially terrible the Hayter version of that would have been?

Haha, just the thought of it makes me laugh.

Finally saw the video. It was great!!!! I loved the mother base stuff in peace walker and the Fulton stuff. Now I can pick up everything I want. So I'm guessing this is the same mother base in peace walker (post attack) so I hope you can get the same shooting range and the obstacle course in that game.

Nope. It's built way differently and it's implied that it's located somewhere else. MSF was mostly active in Central and South America because that's close to where they're located, while DD is active in the middle-east and africa---so I'd guess that DD mothebase is in the indian ocean near oman or pakistan.

It looks like one of the bigger differences now is that instead of a mess hall we have a construction team---there's no reason to have a mess hall now that MGS follows the call of duty style of health/damage systems.

But I'm going to miss having tactical espionage food fights with my warbros

Cmon Sn4ke why you making selective comparisons

I don't even hear Snake saying that line, period. It's so corny.

Sutherland is going to deliver and blow everyone away and going to convert people. I have a feeling he is going to bring the seriousness and feels when it counts. Hayter was good, but when it got emotional, I never really felt he allowed it to as good as it could have been.

I feel he might also, will just be hard to accept the fact its not Hayter...after hearing him as Snake since MGS1. The fact that BB's character design is so unique (and awesome) this time will also help I guess

So I got to thinking about series that have been around for a long time, and in relation how much they have innovated (both intrinsically and at the industry wide.)

There are very few games that have pushed game design as much as Metal Gear Solid. The only games I would say have trumped MGS in this regard would be the Mario and Zelda games. GTA also comes close.

But unlike MGS, those games do not form a continuous series. It amazes me what Kojima has accomplished. I remember when I first played MGS4, and how every "stance" or "state" that Snake was in would open up a handful of new options to interact or maneuver. And unlike some games that push design horizontally, MGS has gone deeper in my eyes than anything else. For each feature that doesn't make it over into a later game, I don't feel as if the game is missing something. Whatever features find their way into the final game feel appropriate, define that games particular feel and mesh with the time, setting and narrative of that game.

I want Kojima to work on what he loves, I will admit I have some greedy desires to see him never leave the side of the series. But more than anything I feel that ground work that he has laid has enabled him and his team to accomplish some of the most amazing work that the industry has ever seen. It's amazing how he incorporates ideas and shapes them to serve the series instead of taking them on the side.

At the beginning of the E3 video they skip a tutorial. Does this mean that The Phantom Pain starts at this point? I thought the hospital scene would be before rescuing Kaz?

Probably a tutorial for the bionic arm and/or other new mechanics being made available at that point in the game. My guess would be that it's the first time the player takes control of big boss with the new arm and in the open world part of the game

The hospital stuff is supposedly more of an on-rails section to get you used to the movement and the basic controls. The Afghanistan level section is the first open world segment of the game and when it "really" begins so to speak, because Ocelot gives you your idroid and all your equipment which you dont have at the hospital. The tutorial in Afghanistan will probably be using the binoculars and the idroid, assuming you haven't played Ground Zeroes. Maybe stuff like the Phantom Cigar as well and things you can do with the horse.

Marry me please.

I think...I think I love you. T_T

Also, finally someone that also thinks about the series like I do, in my heart of hearts there is no other series greater than Metal Gear Solid. It is the one game that really made me love video games more than I did before, it showed me the possibilities of what could be and pushed the envelope and continues to do that with every entry.

it's idroid or binoculars, it puts the marker on your map for the building with the intel inside™

Or maybe Hayter wouldn't. I think of the quality voice acting derives on the actor and the direction the game was going. Don't like seeing how Hayter is being mocked here when his performance was approved under the direction of Kojima.

not if the game is designed around it. MGS has some of the best boss fights in video game history. i'm sure they'll cook up something great.

Boss fights are meant to be a longer scale battle. Regenerating health is meant for small and short skirmishes. You'll never feel like you "barely pulled through a battle" with regenerating health. It sucks. MGS should be a health bar game. Its not even about realism, it's about rewarding gameplay that doesn't cheapen being caught/attacked?

He isn't because Kojima came to his senses.

Man, I want health and stamina bars back. Regenerating health also makes for shitty boss fights.

I don't see how, if the game's designed around that concept. If anything, I think regenerating health might make boss battles more challenging. There's 0.000012% challenge in fighting a boss with 10 rations stored away, that the game USES for you whenever health reaches 0. You could just stand in front of bosses like Olga, for instance, and trade blows till she died, without even moving an inch.

In mgs3 this was more limited, but to balance it out, it's the game where snake loses less health with each attack. Despite all this, you could still beat the Pain without moving at all, same with The Fear.Just stand there, shoot away, tank the mofo with life medicine and call it a day. Just to clarify: of course I don't play like this, all I'm saying is that it's perfectly possible and viable to do so. The boss battles only shined if you went out of your way to shake things a bit.

I love mgs but never thought much about the majority of boss fights, don't see them as gameplay highlights, even though they excel from a audiovisual standpoint. Hopefully TPP will have some awesome boss fights, some CQC battles and environmental bound boss battles, like The End (amazing boss battle).

He isn't because Kojima came to his senses.

Most of the fault lies in shitty writing and voice acting direction, though. If I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons why mgs1 was better than the others was the fact that Blaustein took some "liberties" while localising the game, hence making it sound better for the western audience. Kojima probably doesn't like that, but truth be told, what works in japanese might not work when translated literally. Some compromises have to be made, a "good" voice actor is only half of the equation. There's few man that could read any shitty line and make it sound good, but sutherland is not one of them. He wouldn't be able to make sense of some mgs2,3,4 or pw conversations.

And while I love Hayter, his delivery in PW was pretty bad. That doesn't erase the fact that he has the iconic voice. Make him return to form with his more natural mgs1 voice. Most people are now hating on the man for some reason, I wonder what they'll do if Kojima remakes the first two games and invites him to reprise his role.

Pretty much this. Hayter's performance are what Kris Zimmerman and Kojima wanted. Hayter does not get to chose how he delivers his lines. Each "grumble grumble" from Hayter was directly requested by the voice acting director.

Given the correct direction, Hayter could EASILY return to his MGS Solid Snake voice tone.

Hell, NOTHING I've heard from Kiefer even comes close to the emotion that Hayter delivered in a lot of his lines. The one that instantly comes to mind is the one in the original MGS, when Snake talks about why he killed Big Boss.

"And Alaska was the perfect place...."

Compared to that, Kiefer's delivery is soulless, and just as heartless as the sea.

Yep, I find him grating in Peace Walker and a lot of people seem to be blaming Hayter but it's not his fault really. When he re-recorded lines for Snake Eater 3D he sounded fine.

Agreed. And I'm actually surprised at the stupidity of some people (Not pointing at fingers at anyone in particular here) that seem to be blaming Hayter for the "Repeat everything in question form" that was so characteristic of the Snakes (I'm already missing that =( )

When I listen to Hayter during interviews using his normal voice, I can imagine a PERFECT young Solid Snake.

Voice recordings are repeated time and time again. The director gives the actors instructions until the scene results as the director wants it.

Hayter's "I just swallowed a bee hive" is not something he chose. Actors do not get to chose how to deliver their lines. Every "Making of" documentary that I've seen, has the director making the actors repeat the scene over and over and over again, while giving instructions: "Lower your voice tone", "Don't scream", "A little more pain in the voice".

And in Hayter's case, it is obvious Zimmerman's instructions were "More grumble", "Raspier", "Older", "More cigarrette swallowing".

People are directing the hate to the wrong person here. Do we know Hayter is capable of a great voice tone? Yes. So why didn't he do it during Peace Walker? The answer is voice acting direction.

I just noticed that when Miller is being carried off on a stretcher, after being saved and returning to Mother Base, that he already has a metal peg leg. So he may have actually lost his leg when in those 9 years or at the same time Big Boss lost his arm.

I can see Miller betraying BB and thats the reason BB is with Skullface at the end of the E3 trailer. Miller musta done something really bad to piss BB off

*Ignores fact, blames Hayter for Aizuchi*

Its beautiful man...beautiful.

I feel like BB finally has his "own" look to him. Before PP I felt like he was too much like Solidus/Solid, couldnt really distinguish between them, but now his character model is uh-mazing + new voice actor. It was really needed too cause of PP's directive of BB.
The "tail" just completes the look

I totally agree. Big Boss in for example Peace Walker with sneaking suit could have been easily an older Solid Snake.

This is drawn with a pencil. Pretty impressive.

Well, to be fair, it's only natural to look like a clone of yourself, lol.

Well original plan for MGS4 was game with much larger battlefields.

The ones in Act 1 and Act 2 were honestly fine if that's the best they could do with the PS3. Plenty of different approaches the player could take, decent size, and a good atmosphere of war. I think the lack of more stuff like that in MGS4 was certainly a failure in game development, not a limitation imposed by the hardware.
