Really charming game. Difficulty gets to a nice sweet spot at the Polar Knight stage. Those ice platforms with the wizards sniping you from afar...that's where the raging began. Oh and when I unintentionally smashed a key checkpoint during the Tinker Knight stage.

This game is really going to shine in speed and challenge runs. After 100%ing the game and doing a few speed runs myself, you really start to realise how genius the level design is and how interesting the gold and item systems are when you are coming up with routes to get through the game as quickly as possible. There's a lot to consider and I think there will be a lot of variety to how people try to run this game. The inventory / gold system means you will have a limited amount of gold to spend and will have to weigh up your options on what are the very best items to spend your time and money on getting. The levels have so many small details and speed tricks on top of this, there really is a lot to sink your teeth into if you are the kind of player who attempts high scores / low times.

The relics are useful in every level of the game, I've seen people who think they don't impact the level design much, but I think you need to look a bit harder. In particular the propeller dagger, phase locket, mobile gear and dust knuckles allow for a lot of interesting shortcuts, ways through enemies/obstacles and quickly killing bosses. The game doesn't require them and they aren't specifically needed to make it through anything aside from the item specific challenge levels, but this just opens up a variety of approaches to every situation. They have made the relics useful based on their utility rather than designing them to be the key to specific locks and I think the game is stronger for it. Speed runners are including the purple armor in their route so they have more magic to use their relics more often.

Here is the current best time on Personal Best Tracker(http://www.pbtracker.net/game/shovel-knight): 56:50 by Capndrake. If you are curious about how people are already routing this game and how they use gear and relics this should be interesting.

Gives me hope for the future.

I guess I'm not done with this game yet.

So everyone compares this to Mega Man but the combat mechanics (especially the downward thrust) remind me more of Zelda 2, but I've only seen videos, haven't got the game yet. Am I at all accurate with that comparison? I actually really like Zelda 2.

Perhaps partly, but I believe the main inspiration is Scrooge's cane in the NES Duck Tales game (or recent remake).

Combat is a bit more like Zelda 2/Ducktales thanks to the melee attacking and down-thrust, but the game's general structure (8 themed levels capped off with a boss fight, minibosses, screen to screen transitions, relics that help with combat and traversal, etc) is definitely more Mega Man inspired. Throw those two inspirations in with the world map, a few challenge levels and the roving bosses, and that's Shovel Knight.

Cool, thanks! It's getting harder and harder to not buy this game. Wish I had more time to play.

I saw some discussion but has there been any consensus on Wii U/3DS? Is the Wii U version 1080? Do you miss out on some graphical detail on the 3DS version?...

100%ed it last night. Just edged out MK8 as my GOTY.

I hope Super Shovel Knight adds an upward thrust.

You know, there was this one part where I thought there must be an upward thrust as an upgrade or something. Then I looked around a little more. That would be neat though.

It's an awesome game. 3DS/Wii U seems to come down to whether the platform-specific features (3D and StreetPass for 3DS, Digger's Diary and the upcoming Battle Mode for Wii U) are more important to you personally, as well as the portable vs. console concern. I personally chose the Wii U version and am thrilled with it.

any idea where your game save is on your pc?

[steam folder]\userdata\[user number]\[game number]\remote\savedata.bin

You can find the game folder by sorting them by date modified. Mine happens to be 250760, but I dunno if it's the same for everyone. If you open the file in a text editor you can see it belongs to Shovel Knight.

I am half way through, and really enjoying the difficulty level. It's similar to Mega Man in that you rarely die from combat during the stage, but there are deadly obstacles that will get you. The bosses, of course, are the real peril.

God, that time trial cheat code is hard. I managed to beat Mole Knight, but time ran out during the victory animation.

Question about the No-Dying Feat and No Checkpoints.

For the no-dying, does it count if you play a level, die, then quit back to the main menu. Then try again?

And for the no checkpoints, does it count to beat a level, then replay them all and destroy all the check points, or must it all be in the initial run?

How long did it take? I'm still waiting for the European Wii U release.

I had about 12 hours on the clock, but that includes all my idle time, so I don't know the real time.

Just beat it, 6hrs on the clock. Really like it a lot. It really should default to RB for item use instead of up and X when using the Xbox controller.

Do have a screen shot request...
Anyone got a screen shot of the ending with Shield and shovel on the log? Wanna make it my wall paper

I got this off a video recording of the ending I made.

ENDING SPOILER SCREENSHOT!

What's your high score? I think I'm around 4300.
I'm getting frustrated with the no gold feat, gonna dick around with that super jump code posted a while back.
Propeller Dagger makes you zoom across the screen.

Other than that, no.
Mobile Gear is also faster.

1. If the Wii U were region free, I could just go on the American eshop and download it from there.
2. Yacht Club already stated that the game is being translated right now, and that takes a lot of time. The rating thing is not the issue.
3. Regarding SMTIV: They are, actually. The game will be out this fall in Europe... as a digital download... in English... it's ridiculous that it's taking them this long to release the game digitally and not even translate it, but at least I won't have to buy an American 3DS...

1: The Xbox 360 was not region free, and you could also connect with accounts from other countries. Some content was region locked anyway.

2: To keep the context in place. It is about people blaming Nintendo for not having an European release. A rating may be an issue or not.
A lack of translation did not make Nintendo deny a release in the past.
(maybe eshop describtion texts?)

Details as to how to recycle it is in the latest KS/blog update.

Where?

Been playing this game on the 3DS today. Things were going smoothly until I defeated the third boss, then the game got mean.

So, yeah.

I wanted to be able to play this on my big screen T.V. too.

...so I double dipped, and got it on the Wii U, as well.

I have zero regrets. I love both soundtracks, and saying they were worth buying is gross understatement. That Arranged OST... God(s)like.

So I'm missing one music sheet, No. 19. Following this guide, I collected the music sheet which they said was No. 19 (located in Tower of Fate: Ascent), but when I found it it was grey (indicating that I had already collected it), and I didn't have anything to sell to the bard when I finished the stage. I don't know if the guide is wrong, or if maybe there's a bug regarding collecting certain music sheets in New Game +. Can somebody with the 3DS version confirm whether or not the music sheet in the guide is in fact No. 19?

Holy J. Christ at that entire end game. Wow. Whatever their next game is may be an insta-purchase. What a great design team, and they actually got in game "tutorials" right by seamlessly teaching while you play.

Game of the Year contender for me.

...I didn't even know it kept a score. :( For what it's worth, there were 5 seconds left when I struck the final blow on Mole Knight.

Never mind, I followed a different guide and found the real No. 19.

It shows your treasure total at the end. It's a score attack, not a time attack to beat mole knight.

So far, my best run is essentially destroying all the checkpoints and looting the room to the left of the second-to-last checkpoint. I don't have time for mole knight, who only gives a 2500 bonus.
Never mind, I followed a different guide and found the real No. 19.
The ign guide has some of the sheets mixed up, particularly end of days and the defender.

Ugh, Plague Knight's stage is everything I hate about certain 2D platformers. Hopefully it's not indicative of the rest of the game.

Plague Knight and his stage are probably my least favorite part of the game. It's just annoying.

So is this game akin to something like Duck Tales?, or what would be a more apt comparison?

There's not really a direct 1:1 comparison. It's Shovel Knight. It's its own thing. It's a retro-styled 2D action platformer. If you like games like Mega Man and Castlevania, you'll probably like this game.
