Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

Correct. Thor has innate powers unrelated to the hammer. The hammer makes him much more formidable, but his status as "god of thunder" which allows him to summon storms and control weather, generate raw "godforce" from his body, and his massive strength all predate his being able to pick up mjolnir. His mother is also an elder god, more powerful than Odin and Thor has some Ill defined earth based powers related to that.

There's also the issue that Jarnbjorn while not mjolnir is still DISGUSTINGLY powerful, and Thor just killed exitar (!!!) With it in uncanny Avengers. Mjolnir as impressive as it is can't get away with that one.

So Thor is still technically the "god of thunder" without the Mjolnir? If this new character no longer has the Mjolnir, will she loose her thunder powers?

Isn't Thor a name not a title, though? And haven't they had other people weild Mjolnir like this badass motherfucker?

Have you ever talked to women who watched Avengers?!

Beta Ray Bill only wielded Mjolnir for a very short time (like 5 mins), he has his own unique hammer with the same powers of Mjolnir called Stormbreaker.

You know I'm all for women superheroes and do agree that they haven't done a great job in that regard but don't change a character just to fucking change them. I'm sorry but Thor is Thor. You can't just go oh no sorry you're not Thor anymore. I'd rather them create a new character who kicks ass and happens to be a woman and Then have her take his hammer.

Hell I'd be totally ok with this if they just did not call her Thor. That simple.

But you're posting an image of a panel that was written by Hickman not Aaron.

Are you of the mindset that they don't talk at all?

The axe Jarnbjorn was created by Aaron in God of Thunder, but a major plot point of Remender's Uncanny Avengers.

I don't even know what your point is, like Marvel's writer are magical islands unto themselves and don't reference and set up each other.

I'm seeing a lot of this, but I doubt most of the people saying this actually read the comic that says "Thor" on the cover. They can and have said "hey, you're not Thor anymore".

Well, since it's never happened before, it can't ever happen in the future, right?

Logic: spellbinding.

Goddammit. Boob plates again??!

Comic artists PLS

I actually like boob plates. It's like, "I am a woman and not afraid to show it"
It typically works best with professions associated with masculinity.
Obviously in the real world there is a cost issue so everything has to fit everyone
I could imagine warrior queens with custom armour though
It also makes for easy groping

it is a short term story arc. happens all the time. They just got on the View to announce it. The movie will take things back to normal.

Thor's continuity is so messed up, but I liked what they had done with Thor since JMS's run and through the recent God Bomb arc. In that continuity Thor is his name and he's a god. I don't particularly find it interesting that it's now (again) apparently a title. I guess you can't have a Thor book without somebody being named Thor, but this is reading like "Bruce Wayne is now a woman, because Bruce Wayne passed on the mantle of Bruce Wayne to Bruce Wayne."

go away

EDIT: and I don't want to hear any "hurr hurr it doesn't matter because she's an invulnerable god" bullshit. practicality is practicality.

There is actually a good reason for this. Sometimes.

Depending on costume, a character design can become devoid of almost all sexual identity. This sounds good in theory, but if the character just ends up looking like a pretty dude, it can alienate the readers whom the character is meant to be identifiable to.

In the long run, 'boob plates'--especially as they are done here--do more good than harm.

I am more annoyed that they could not help but show midriff.

He is still Thor. But she is somehow also Thor and I'm sure that will be explained in detail when the book comes out. This is Jason Aaron we're talking about, he's not a shitty writer.

No need to discount it outright just because they're not fully explaining what the story is in the initial reveal.

It's both. He is Thor Odinson, that cannot be taken away. However the hammer Mjolnir confers the power of the God of Thunder and the mantle of Thor.

And the God-Bomb arc was written by the same guy who's writing this.

I'm imagining this is going to last about 12-18 months like Superior Spider-Man or NWO Red Sting.

Probably. Thor will be back by Avengers Age of Ultron, and this new Thor will probably be given her own title. Marvel has been doing that for a few years now.

Yeah, I think that's what gets me. Why couldn't there just be a new "God of Thunder"? That would make so much more sense

I said this in the other thread but I'll say it here:

That's not how Thor works.

Thor is his name, not a title or an alias. You get the powers with the hammer, but you don't become Thor by being the thunder god any more than you become Odin by ruling Asgard.

This is dumb.

She's not Thor just like Beta Ray Bill wasn't Thor.

Bingo. It's a stupid publicity stunt and honestly Marvel has been doing that way to much recently.

They announced this on the View for god's sake. That alone should show how much of a stunt this is.

So, Thor stops being worthy and now someone, a female, bares the name and wields the hammer? OH NO, WHAT AN AWFUL THING.

It isn't like Odin decided "I NO LONGER WANT A SON" and made him a female. Some people act like the biggest babies.

Link to this? I checked the Marvel pages and it's just a bunch of dudes butthurt with a few calling women sluts and crying about "feminism," as if women stormed the Marvel offices this morning and forced the issue.

There is a good deal of what you described too.

I wonder why they seem to like doing this with their Norse god characters. We already had female Loki...

You think it was a long conversation between Remender and Aaron? Remender probably asked Aaron, "hey can I use this?" and Aaron was like "sure, what're you going to need it for?" Remender: "I'm going to enchant it so it can kill celestials" Aaron: "well there's no celestials in my plans so go right ahead."

And like I said, that picture is 422 years in to the future. Are you reading Avengers?

Why do we only care about "sexual identity" in women's costumes? No one goes over Master Chief's armor and thinks, "hmmmm... not titillating enough."

NOT A SPOILER!! NO SPOILER!! NOT A SPOILER!!

Makes me think of a Game of Thrones style plotline where a female knight is given boob plate armour in a ploy to kill her.
It works better in science fiction though like in Mass Effect where most combat is at range with the occasional omni-blade thrown in

That has varied through his history. I acknowledge that others have "taken the mantle of Thor." I'm just saying it's never not sucked. The idea pretty dumb, but that doesn't mean they can't make it work this time. Just doesn't really excite me, especially paired with the tryhard announcement.

On another note, the boob plate sub discussion is funny when it comes to Thor. I mean,

Well that's fine. Either way, they're sticking with the mantle idea.

"
This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor"

Wait-- Captain America(n, lol), Iron Man, and Thor are Marvel's "big three?" What? They must be referring to the movies.

She still looks more properly armored than all the (male) Thors who wore spandex and chainmail body paint and... uh... whatever the hell this is:

nipple guards. god nipples are massive weakspots due to sensitivity

Wait-- Captain America(n, lol), Iron Man, and Thor are Marvel's "big three?" What? They must be referring to the movies.

i assume they are referring to the avengers, while spidey is biggest overall

Why do we only care about "sexual identity" in women's costumes? No one goes over Master Chief's armor and thinks, "hmmmm... not titillating enough."

I guess because the default gender of an armored person is male

All these alternate Thor pics and nobody remembers when Storm got the hammer?

Lol, isn't she already omega level when it comes to weather manipulation? This just seems like overkill, but then I remember we're talking about comics here

I wonder why they seem to like doing this with their Norse god characters. We already had female Loki...
I think someone at Marvel editorial really likes the idea that Thor is the Wonder Woman of the Avengers trifecta, and asgard the marvel answer to DC's amazon.

Why is Thor no longer worthy? Is that a comic thing or are they just saying that?

I imagine this is a story. Male Thor will probably be back in time beforeAvengers or Thor 3 hit theatres.

Just like Superior Spider-Man, Marvel markets it like its a huge upheaval or permanent change to get readers and then it eventually returns to status quo as events play out.

So, Thor stops being worthy and now someone, a female, bares the name and wields the hammer? OH NO, WHAT AN AWFUL THING.

It isn't like Odin decided "I NO LONGER WANT A SON" and made him a female. Some people act like the biggest babies.

Nobody cares that she's wielding the hammer, or gains the powers, or has the position.

The name thing is stupid.

Eh.

I would have rather seen Marvel start a new female character afresh instead of retroactively giving a 'male title' a female protag but it's okay I suppose.

This. Thor is Thor. Why can't a pre-existing female Asgardian like Sif or Valkyrie be deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir?

Hell I'd be totally ok with this if they just did not call her Thor. That simple.

I'd also be happy with her being Thor, but genderswapped. Loki did it, so I don't see why Thor couldn't.

It just seems silly that Marvel have two very clearly established ways of doing this and they're gonna ignore both of them.
