Thor is now the goddess of Thunder

If you're going to make this argument, you have to contend with the fact that Thor's current armor has this exact same issue:

Like wise any helmet with horns.

When it comes to fantasy fiction I'll take awesome over sensible any time.

I thought Thor was his name, not a title bestowed by the hammer. Who was this girl before she was Thor?

Then who is Thor now? George of Thunder?

I don't get it. A female Thor doesn't bother me, I just don't understand how it works.

That's what a lot of people thought, though they seem to be going in a different direction (which in all fairness has some precedent, depending on your perspective).

Who was she before? Just speculation at the moment. Most seem to think its Angela who has been set up to be Thor's sister.

Thor is still Thor Odinson just like he's always been. Thor as the thunder god has apparently established the name so thoroughly that every successive God of Thunder will inherit the mantle, and name, of Thor.

See, this is what bothers me. You can take it either way, a title or a name of a being. The problem is (like most things in comics) you can take it either way.

He's never been said in any of his instances of him losing his hammer "...you aren't Thor, now. We will just call you Tom until you get your hammer back." Not everyone who has wielded the hammer been called "Thor". Like Cap.

Honestly, while I agree with you, there's not much point in arguing it. The relevant arguments have been made for both perspectives multiple times over here; we're at the point we just kinda need to accept this is the way it is right now. Emphasis on those last two words. Right now. Next year could be completely different.

Wasn't he just Donald Blake for awhile till he found the hammer at various points?

Yea, I'm not arguing with anyone. Just baffled by Marvel, as usual. I'm all for it, though. Lady Thor looks awesome.

Those who wield the hammer...if they be worthy shall wield the power OF Thor. So its a female worthy to pick up Mjolnir basically. She has the powers OF Thor and so bears the title of Thor god of thunder.

I've turned down other jobs that have come up because I knew they would mean that I would have to give up Thor. So I'm really happy with the stuff I'm working on at Marvel, and in particular "Thor." I want to stick around until I get a big stack of issues under my belt. I want a couple of big Thor omnibuses by the time I'm done with this.

This is awesome. I love Jason Aaron and want to see him continue on Thor for as long as he wants to.

I'll admit to being fairly boring with my sexual inclinations, but I can't see "titillation" in this. The boob plate armor is silly, yeah, but...I don't know. Everyone brings their own view to art, I suppose.

Like I said, compare with Red Sonja:

That's titillation!

That reminds me of this picture.

Does that mean the old Thor isn't going anywhere? Will he still very much be a part of this new book?

Yes, Thor Odinson, the Prince of Asgard, will still be around. He's still Thor. That's his birth name.

"He's Thor but not Thor! And the new Thor IS THE Thor, but not this Thor, not anymore! We're breaking new ground in storytelling!"

So is Thor (not she-Thor/Thora/Thorette, but the new female Thor) a princess like Thor (XY, Odin's son/Odinson) is a prince? Or is Thor (XX) a not already established woman/human person?

The artist should take XX Thor back to the drawing board.
-flatten the chestplate, if they must give it a more pectoraley muscley guard outline rather than boobsarmour. any female warrior or shieldmaiden etc worth her salt would wrap. if you must have circles, put them all over the torso, in fact why aren't those there? :P
-extend the chestplate down to cover the ribcage and across the upper abs
-add some tight abs/Marvel-style 12pack to the leather under garment thingy if you must and get rid of the dumb midriff holes
-extend the metal gauntletey plate armour further up the left arm/shoulder

Something more along these lines I think, except more buff as shit because she is Thor
ReOmOYV.jpg

older concept sketch of Sif from the movies I think?

mixed with brienne from GoT show (just less bulky armour though and more red and blue tones)

-give her bigger or more defined muscles, particularily the leg area, arms are decent. she is Thor, not a slim olympian runner
-lose the freaking lipstick, same with the eyeshadow, she batman or something? all black eyeball colour is badass though
-if you must have "makeup" on her face, make them warpaint/tattoos or something cool like this but more intricate and worthy of her god status:

Actually, give her braids like that, too, that's badass.

edit: Also, establish that Thor is a title given to anyone who wields Mjolnir. And by Odin's beard, please don't change the inscription on the hammer because people might be uncomfortable/confused with "he" as a neutral pronoun - it's perfectly agreeable and using something like "they" is just garbage language in my opinion. "One" is fine, but it sounds really awkward. If they MUST change it, then change it to "she" which is also acceptable as a neutral pronoun, actually it kind of makes more sense if you think about it. Just don't do "they", "it", "one", "s/he" or whatever, it just sounds awful.

They want to make it pretty clear that this Thor is a woman (which I guess counts as sexualized), the boob plate doesn't seem to go much beyond that. If her look was just for male gaze they would have gone much further

One would imagine that Marvel could come up with a design for the new Thor that makes it obvious she's a woman without using things like boob plate.

Women are defined by their breasts? Ehhhhh I dunno about that. Plenty of ways to establish this is a woman Thor besides giving her ridiculous armour - especially considering the "this is NOT SHE-THOR" narrative they are trying to spin.

"The power of Thor" - the title Thor transfers to any who carries Mjolnir since he was the first to wield Mjolnir (I think?). Thor son of Odin remains Thor in name only, not title. Thor the Asgardian vs Thor god of thunder.

ex: "Valkyrie, you are now Thor, god of thunder! As only you have proven yourself worthy of Mjolnir".

Now we know that it won't be Angela. And Thanos is coming back, from wherever he was hiding.

Though, why does an amazon like angel warrior were such high heeled boots? Oh marvel that's one horrible design flaw.

Maybe she is the is the angel of strippers?....

Well, believe it or not, but breasts, or the absence of those, are a gender characteristic. I guess they also could have given her a very noticeable waist/hip ratio, put her in a skirt or something like that, but I'm not sure if that wouldn't end up as more offensive.

Believe it or not, but breasts are a mammal characteristic (mammary glands within), not a sex characteristic (gender is a societal construct). Generally, women have more developed breasts than men because of the higher amounts of the hormone estrogen over testosterone, but that ratio is not exclusive to women - just more prevalent, and you would think would be less likely in a female THOR. Aside from genetic differences between individuals, generally, if you have: high Testosterone, low Estrogen; larger muscles, smaller breasts. High Estrogen, low Testosterone; smaller muscles, larger breasts. Regardless of sex. Pretty straightforward, just look at some female body-builders or dudes with man boobs.

And none of that has to do with the boob-shaped chest plate armour, I think. That's just a stupid design trend that has never made any sense at all. I realize it is a comic book super-hero, but come on, your response basically amounts to "could be worse", and I'm not buying it simply because it "could be better". But no, the only way people will understand this Thor is a woman is by using one of your suggestions, right?

If they refer to her as Thor, then that's batshit crazy stupid. But if they call her something else and give her her just due by fleshing out her character with a back story and push her ahead with the same treatment we got with Beta Ray Bill? Then I'm 100% cool with it. Otherwise, it'll be a snoozer with me, even if Copiel does the artwork for it.

pointless to go here, because...wait for it...Thor isn't a mammal. none of the asgardians are. None share any genetic lineage with animals or humanity, none of them evolved, they just look like they do. All of them are reflections of humanity's ideals, NOT what is genetically likely.

If the ideal for a female thundergod is "amazing rack" as well as "huge arm muscles" then that's what a female thor will look like. This was actually emphasized in the second thunderstrike limited series, where a teenager was granted (a variant of) the power of Thor, and ended up looking like his father. Kevin (Thunderstrike 2) realized he COULD change this, and did (to a much sillier version more stereotypical of "hero" before dialing it back down) but it was made clear that the appearance of the asgardians was malleable. They look like that because they wish to look like that.

as for the armor, asgardians and Thor in particular are naturally invulnerable without any armor at all. NO armor is functional. NO design is going to be "worse" than another because nothing can cut, scratch, or injure them that isn't astronomically powerful, and anything on that tier isn't something that a little armor is going to stop. They can just as easily fight in the nude, and in some cases Thor has, with a loincloth for modesty. and that's what the boob armor is here, half modesty, half aesthetics- and since we're talking about a fantasy series, dressing her in baggy tactical armor like she's lady punisher is nonsensical. literally everyone in asgard is wearing some kind of ridiculous, implausible gear, because that's the style of the time. the lady thor outfit is actually extremely conservative, in context.

wait wait wait wait

does this make thor a disney princess now

I am literally laughing out loud

fuck. you're the first person to point this out and it's pretty much valid.

This got me thinking, how many other of the big-name super heroes from Marvel and DC have fairly gender-neutral names? Green Lantern, The Flash, Cyborg, Hawkeye, Daredevil, pretty much all of the X-Men, the Human Torch, the Thing, etc. It seems like Marvel could do this more easily than DC.

DC's pretty much got their big-guns on lock-down when it comes to gender by either having "man" or "woman" in their names.

Sorry for the bump, but I just had the above pointed out to me... and then it was followed up with

Disney also bought Lucas Film, which means that Princess Leia is a Disney Princess as well....

my next thought was:
I can't help but feel bad for all the little girls that will no longer be able to have dinner with the princesses as Disneyland because a bunch of 40something year old men will be booking all the tables for their chance to take pics with Princess Leia in her bikini outfit...
