Just getting started but can someone clear up A) what the emblems are for and B) What the vanguard and crucible marks do and how I get them? Are they just another form of currency that align me with a particular group?
It is just a different way to use superb. The game and classes would be boring if evey superbs are the same.
Well...damnit. I wasn't that interested in the game because I never liked Halo... Playing the beta now and I guess I'm in. Money I don't have... Hahahaha.
2-3 more open roam areas of this magnitude per planet? Just think about it man, that's expecting too much. I know Bungie is a big developer and this has been in the burner for a while, but that's an intensive amount of large scale map design. That would also mean there would've been quite a bit of work done in UI and probably even NPC dialouge edits just for the alpha and beta to hide the possibility of there being a lot more than a handful of areas. I'd love to eat crow here, but I highly doubt that's going to happen.
And to be honest, I'd rather have quality over quantity; have more unique named enemies to find, having some random npcs/quest givers out there in the map, better missions that aren't collecathons, etc.. Even Borderlands had that shit, and many people consider that game to be completely barren.

The summon time on the Golden Fun is the problem. It's a huge tell and the other two don't have tells.
Do we know how significant a chunk of content the beta really is? I'd certainly hope it's a pretty small sliver, it'd be kind of weird if it was a short RPG-style shooter.
a) aesthetics
b) doing bounties, events, item exchange, missions, crucible (pvp), etc. there are a lot of ways to get them. and yes.
Just a heads up. Here's a good glimmer run if you haven't seen this yet:

Basically, you go to the Rocketyard (which you pass through to enter the indoor area where you have to survive 3 waves to progress in the Strike) and circle around it.
Also, isn't supposed to actually be snowing somewhere in Old Russia? I haven't seen any snowflakes falling from the sky
The game is down for maintenance until wednesday.Thanks. I'll try this tomorrow.
Unless there is a mysterious third subclass that gives the Titan and Warlock an ability like the Golden Gun (whereby the Hunter's Arc Blade becomes the ability with no tell), I'm in full support of a rebalance of the Fist of Havok and Nova Bomb.
During the alpha Bungie said it was about 10% of the game world.

Game world or game?
The alpha being 10% of the game world would make the final release ginormous. I know they've been working on this for a while, but I find that hard to believe.
The Warlock super sucks because it can definitely be dodged. You see a purple dude taking off and all you have do is double jump/glide up and to the left or right and you're clear while they're stuck in an animation looking very unfrabjous. Titans are just... well, you learn quickly that their are places that are going to be multi-kill zones and when and how to avoid them. Any capture point for example. If there are 3 or more guys there, don't make it any sexier by sticking around there for the extra 75 points when you're all likely going to die predictably.Supers are the main reason I hate the PVP in this game. CoD-like map and game play design is bad enough, but one hit instant kills that can't be dodged for two classes, and the Hunter class having a charge time plus aim requirements? That's boring for Titans (my class) and Warlocks, and unfair for Hunters.
Seriously think they should ban Supers from PVP, stop awarding points for kills so players start playing for objectives rather than camping map edges, and replace the K/D scoreboard with an actual scoreboard that shows which guardians were winning the game instead of kill-farming.

They should just add PvP only supers or disable supers in PvP, the last thing I want to see is Fist and Nova getting "nerfed" in PvE to make up for their dominance in PvP
Ugh. That's right, totally forgot.
Just noticed that. Well fuck. And I was off tomorrow.
So do you have to sort of pick one or the other? Or are they sort of like questlines that you can 100% both?
That's beside the point. The other two supers have no warnings and require little to no aiming. It's all fine and well that you can launch a blackhole across the map or hulk smash the ground. What's not fine is that you can do it around the corner in an instant and nobody can do anything about it. Heavy Weapons and Special Ammo are on the map to be picked up for the very reason that they don't want people spamming Snipers and Rockets at every turn. When two of the supers are doing just that, it contradicts that design especially considering that the 3rd super is the opposite.
If there is a mysterious third subclass that gives the Titan and Warlock an ability like the Golden Gun (whereby the Hunter's Arc Blade becomes the ability with no tell), then they'll at least all have an AoE, versatile and support super class to debate over. Until that's confirmed, I'm in full support of a rebalance of the Fist of Havok and Nova Bomb.

More derping than herping, but yeah for the most part.

Would it really be that crazy? Old Russia isn't that big.
Completely agree with this. It's like the hunter special is from a different game altogether. As a hunter, you have to predict when it's necessary, trigger the special early, aim each shot, not die while using it. As a titan or warlock, you just have to hit two buttons when you want everything around to die without accidentally dropping your controller.
I would actually be in favor of Bungie making all specials work like the Golden Gun. For example, titans do a roaring animation or something when you activate their special then hulk smash the next time you hit melee. That way it requires at least some marginally intelligent thought.
It'd be nice if when someone was capable of doing their super they'd glow.
Yup, just posted this and I agree. All they need is a tell. Nothing else needs to change.
You make it sound like we've even seen all of Old Russia. There are still more areas to it and that isn't even counting the underground stuff that is completely unknown.

There's a challenge for story progress that's out of a hundred. I have 40/100 of that challenge filled after doing my own story and helping some friends get through there's about 3 times. Not including the first missions for my friends that'd be about 17 missions equating to 40% of the story if there's only 1 level for the story progression challenge.
All they have to do is give the supers an activation period. Make the Titan pound his fists before he's ready to hulk smash, and make the Warlock summon up an orb of space magic in his hand.
3 tells, and they don't have to be nerfed. I'm not a Bungie designer but there is a very easy solution staring us in the face. So long as I know the guy has his super ready to use, I can respond accordingly. Right now, you really can't.

So around 40 missions to complete the story progress grimoire?
No, but I think there are areas outside old Russia...as a test I drove well past the old harbour(?) and was heading into an area called the grotto, but was forced back by mobs who even at my lol 8 were double ?? To me..
( I could be wrong and it loops back around, but it didn't feel like it did), and I'd be a bit annoyed if old Russia was the only earth combat zone...
That's a thought. It's a rough guesstimate but it's there. 40 missions does sound like a lot, but a lot of the ones in the beta were pretty short. I could see them getting lengthier further in though.
You guys complaining about the hunter special are exaggerating. I can pop the inter special and do some crazy ish. I like it better than the genki dama the Warlock uses.
You're playing one game mode in a beta. I think you'll potentially be happier with the finished product. Bungie, if history is any indicator, will likely bring some type of gametype in matchmaking that locks out Supers just because there's a small audience for it. Hell, considering the fact that they catered to the SWAT players in Halo should probably guarantee it.
Kings Watch is still closed off in the Beta. We don't know how big that area is.
Where can I find the leader boards?
*raises hand*i played every time the Iron Banner games went up and i haven't received anything great.. anyone else experience the same?
Do you understand how control scoring works? That's true, but the problem with the current game mode is it pretends to be objective based, when really it's team deathmatch. Even the scoreboard doesn't reflect player's commitment to flag capture - only their K/D ratio.
Maybe I'm too used to Battlefield where objective play is actually important, and you can easily win and top with the scoreboard with a negative K/D if your objective play is solid. It's a shame to see Destiny take that CoD route of small, close quarters map design, where getting kills is the only thing that matters regardless of what the game pretends to be about.
Glad others are enjoying the PVP, but I'm definitely sticking to PVE if this is an indication of the direction they're taking. I'm too used to objective-based team PVP in Battlefield and Dota 2.
Just a question for people who have played Halo multiplayer before, do you prefer Destiny's? Are they similar? Or they can't really be compared?
