Dear White People | Official Trailer

Again, at what point did anyone say this? You're trying to pull me into an argument for something I never said or implied.

I don't really get what you're arguing, then.

Gr1mLock said that he bets the black lead ends up with the white dude. I stated there's nothing inherently wrong with that. You said:

I fucking hope not. Really fed up that women of color are being led into lead roles in media, but only if they pursue and fuck white men.

My entire argument has been that:
-White-black relationships in media are not inherently bad
-In this particular movie (which this thread is about), we don't know if they DO have a relationship and if they DO, there is zero indication from the trailer that she is "pursuing" or "chasing" a white man

You said:

I specifically said that women of color only get pushed into the spotlight in TV and movies when there is a white male romantic love interest. These are observable facts. I don't care if they hurt your feelings.

And yet you are not arguing that this is happening in this movie? So I'm really not sure what you're arguing? What was the purpose of saying that women of color ONLY get pushed into the spotlight, as a FACT, if you aren't referring to the context of this thread/film?

Travisbickle was responding to Camp Lo's post about racists on IMDB. Why do you seem more concerned that someone calls out racism with a benign statement (why are white people so passive aggressive) than the actual examples of it? Is it because you think he's talking about all white people?

Pizarro's post was a sarcastic criticism specifically about those racist IMDB users and other like-minded persons. I see nothing wrong with shitting on the idiots who think the film shouldn't exist. If you're white, don't take it as a personal attack on you or all whites.

It was Pizarro's reply that bothered me. What are white people so passive aggressive? "Because THEY (i.e. white people, generally) can't say exterminate the mud people in public anymore because of the pc gestapo." Yeah, that's a benign statement.

Was Pizarro referring to "white people" or IMDB comments? If you say so, I'll concede I may have assumed incorrectly and just call it a misunderstanding.

I'll see it just to support a new generation of black actors and actresses. lol at "mulatto" though. I feel like that's the same as being called "oriental."

The Lisa Bonet line pretty much summed up my initial reaction to the lead. Of course, I love Lisa Bonet so that's not a bad thing at all.

The way you're wording your post, it sounds like you are trying to say that the movie is FOCUSED on the relationship between the black female lead and the white male lead.

There is no reason to believe that this movie about a black woman's pursuit of a white man; if they are in a relationship, it looks benign, from the few seconds we saw.

Jado is saying he is not saying this.

What Jado IS saying is that he is tired of the overused film trope of black women and white males in relationships, which is similar to the black male + latino female trope that has become more popular lately due to black and white US audiences acting more favorably to the pairing than black male + black female and/or black male + white female pairings. NOT that there is anything wrong with the pairings, he just wants more diversity.

I wasn't arguing with you at all until you and a few others came at me. The only way I touched upon this movie was by saying "I hope not" in regards to "You know the lead character is going to end up with that white dude." I was not making any definite claims about the movie's plot or this specific movie being guilty of some trope. I was expressing a simple opinion that "I hope that doesn't happen."

I made a generally valid remark about Hollywood's casting choices -- you chose to misinterpret that as me arguing specifics that this movie had failed in some way and then proceeded to argue with me on that incorrect assumption. I don't know why you want me to engage you in something I never said. Let it go.

Thanks, Kreed. They see "white men" in a critical post, don't care to find out the context and just throw a fit and say I'm making negative claims about Dear White People. If I had said "After the Legolas crap, I HOPE Aragorn isn't in the new Hobbit movie and does some silly shit like kill the dragon," are you really dumb enough to misunderstand and come after me screaming that I said Aragorn is in the new Hobbit movie and that I'm ripping the movie to shreds?

Jado just take the L

Nah, no reason when I said nothing wrong.

I think maybe I'm conditioned to colleges in CA but there is a stunning lack of Asians in this movie. If were counting Indians I swear even Midwest schools, would have close to 30% in that demographic.

Actually, I've been saying the exact opposite: that the movie is NOT about the "black woman pursuing a white man" relationship, which is why I objected to his statement in the first place; furthermore, I saw nothing wrong with the portrayal of a black woman dating a white man, as even if they do have a relationship (which they may/probably don't, looking into it further), it will likely be another lens through which to view white privilege/casual racism and not another "black woman chasing white man" situation. My first response was to his statement that women of color only get leading roles if they pursue white men.

Perhaps if you cut down on snarky responses about my "hurt feelings" and using absolute language like "only" multiple times, you'll receive a less aggressive response.

Isn't that meant to be inclusive?

I can think of better ways to be inclusive than saying, "You don't act like a black person!"

Well it's clearly telling a more afrocentric viewpoint. The writer and director is black so that's probably the reason. If asians wanted to do a asian centric version of dear white people movie then they would probably have to get asian writers and directors to want to do something like that.

Trailer just made me cringe. It was like a Tumblr post in movie form, which I guess is part of the intent. Hoping its good but I'm not sold.

There's Asians in the movie

Not that it matters. It's a film made by a Black director and he should be able to tell the story he wants to tell from his own experiences. It's just really strange to keep hearing stories about the lack of minority representation in films when I don't even think I can recall the last time an Asian American actor got even a mediocre role in a movie, independent or otherwise.

Pelydr

mediocrity at its best
Glad to see the kid from "Everybody hates Chris" is still getting work! Sad to see the fucking beav is still getting work! That dude cant act.

No, the existence of racism period. The level of racism in America and other countries is fucking exhausting.

Agreed 100%.

This movie shouldn't even have to be a thing, and I fully expect the outrage police to have a field day with it while missing the point of why it's there to begin with.

It is what it is, I guess. People are assholes. :/

Kinda felt the same way. I'll probably watch it when it comes out because I'm pretty curious about it and I hope it's good, but man, I found it very hard to relate with the main character. She came off as very "Tumblr" in an annoying way. Like you said, with an extreme lack of subtlety, or likeability.

Hope I'm wrong though. Many, many, many great movies have awful trailers.

Hell yeah. I'm more interested in the fallout than the actual movie and I'm REALLY interested in the movie.

I've had some friends of mine ask if they could feel my hair after it had been freshly cut. Can't blame them, honestly, it does kinda feel good.

Define "black person" in a way that makes any sense; enough that non-black people will know where the proverbial line in the sand is.

BTW I am "mulatto."

EDIT:

I realize that this is a question for the idiots who say this to you, but feel free to answer.

Not sure how to articulate it but the extreme lack of subtlety is part of it.

That says absolutely nothing about how this is a "tumblr post in movie form." Maybe you should stop parroting the meaningless nonsense others use to be dismissive about this stuff.

Ridiculous.
