Tattoo AND piercing thread

I have four tattoos currently.
Right arm (bicep (1st tattoo), lower underarm (3rd one))

Left arm (bicep (newest one), lower forearm (2nd tattoo))

I'm thinking of getting a fifth one underneath the coat-of-arms one. Mostly to even up the weight since that one is quite high u on the arm and the lower bicep feels empty as of now.

Thinking of a batman symbol. I also want a ring that goes around the arm, so maybe a symbol based on the dark knight rises one where the "ring" is made up of cracks in the skin that goes together on the front forming a batman symbol. How does that sound?

Got my first tattoo 2 weeks ago on my left forearm. Check this:

Ooo! What is it of?

Lovely! :) You say that now, but about a year from now, you're gonna go
...another tat would be cool..." happens to all of us "

We've had ours for 4 days and we're already planning our next ones :D

All I've got at the moment piercing-wise is two in each earlobe (first ones at 18 months old, don't remember, got the second ones when I was maybe 21), and my belly button (got that done at 14). I'm 26 now. I want the upper part of my ear done but I need to find somewhere good to get it done as I hear there can be problems later on if not performed properly.

I want some tā moko (Māori ink) but not sure what to get yet and it's bit more involved to get a proper one compared to a regular tat. A lot of my friends have forearm tā moko, and I think they look quite cool on women. I wouldn't mind a circular koru or manaia somewhere though too.

These pics are wearable taonga but give some idea of what I want...

Koru:

Manaia:

I'd love to get them done via traditional methods but I've heard it hurts like hell. Might be worth it for the textured effect though.

What's the traditional method?

And wow at 18 months old and having piercings! You started early :)

Have you got a pic?

They used to use a uhi or chisel sharpened from an albatross bone, with a handle affixed, and hit it with a mallet into the skin to puncture it. The chisel revival has been pretty strong lately but I'm not sure I could hack it.

Haha yeh, apparently I asked for earrings and my parents, being pretty lax, obliged. Apparently I was pretty responsible about it too keeping them clean and turning them every day. I think it's actually probably why I never went crazy with piercings later on, because there was no rebellion in it. I'd still like a few more things pierced though hehe.

Been thinking about getting:
avatar_0ecf57257805_128.png
on my back/shoulder

never had a tattoo before. Would prefer not to get one that people thought was inherently stupid.

Would this work as a tattoo?

I like it, because (1) it is a reference to a band, but like the least explicit reference you could ever make. (2) I think it looks cool

Idk. I am back and forth.

Took advice and put it as my phone lock screen. Haven't gotten sick of it yet.

I guess my biggest concern is trusting someone enough to make a good circle. That seems easy to fuck up.

Eh, it's on your back after it heals you'll find yourself forgetting you even have it. Further up in the thread you can see my huge back piece, i often forget it's there. The design itself is fine so long as you like it. But then i have a frog and a gecko on my tits, so my judgement might not be the best.

As far as the artist goes, look through their portfolios and pay attention to how many circular designs they have and how well they're done. Look for experience and a background in painting or some other classical art form.

I'm really interested to hear about your experience and take on tattooing. Don't forget to update the thread!
An update finally!

My original booking was postponed but finally got it done today. It was a really good experience; did it all in just one session of three hours. I was a little nervous but the pain was exactly what one would expect it to be - i.e. what you'd expect from a little needle pricking your skin for several hours. Honestly after the first 10 minutes, when I was sweating a bit but it was all bearable, the whole area just kind of numbed anyway. It was actually more of an issue making sure my arm didn't go dead from lying on it for so long!

The tattooist said I was really still (I was conscious of keeping my breathing fairly shallow since the tattoo was on the ribs) and it allowed her to get things done quicker than expected. At one point one of the other tattooists came over to look and was shocked when they realised it was my first and on the ribs... they couldn't believe I hadn't asked for any breaks or complained about the pain.

Happy with the result! Still in the plastic wrap so not sure if there's any point posting a pic of that but will definitely post a pic when fully healed.

(And yes, already talked to her about the next one, hehe.)

I usually don't like the whole Japanese art themed tattoos (more because it was initially something good, creative, and meaningful then it got WAY overdone by too many people, unfairly stigmatizing the style but that aside), BUT yours is done very well, like magazine picture well. Also I'm a big fan of colored work vs. just black and grey.

been wanting to get more piercings on my ear but i know its probably a matter of time until i hurt my tragus. i would take it out but i cant LOL i had it so long in my ear i cant unscrew it. ugh

Thanks, yeah dragon is too cliche. But the reason I got it was that my name in Viet and Chinese means dragon. So that's why I got it. This was my first tattoo. The black outline took 1 session about 4/5 hours. But the colors took forever. Coloring the scales was a massive pain in the ass. Took a total of 5 sessions, about 15/16 hours total. The great thing was that I had a hookup. Only cost me like about $400 for it. I tipped him $200, so total $600. For the amount of work, it was pretty cheap for the piece. Plus it came out really nice.

You definitely had a decent hookup. That's extremely cheap even for an extended piece (multiple session work) of that size.

Going to get my first tattoo at Three Kings Tattoo in Brooklyn today or tomorrow. Any advice?

Just choose a good image in which you truly believe or care. Do not follow trends.
My friend wants a Mexican skull on her thigh without knowing anything about it, just because it looks cool. That's not the reason you should use to make a tattoo imho

Going to get my tattoo patched up next week, it looks pretty freaking bad. I'm not going to the same tattoo artist to get it patched. The guy that originally did it put no soul into it and rushed it. I doubt it'll look magnitudes better but there's no way I can afford to get it 'removed' so I'll just see what happens.

The sails look decent but the boat itself looks like a turd floating on water.

It's the exact same size as the boat in my drawing, he just photocopied it then traced it onto me.

I'm getting someone's name tattooed on my rib area, horizontally

If you really feel you want to do it go for it. Nothing more personal than that.
Personally I wouldn't tattoo on myself any name or face if it's correlated to a specific person, but who knows maybe I'll change my mind.

Well I plan on marrying this person so I hope I don't regret it haha

So does the tattoo artist come up with sketches of the name and let us pick something or is it more collaborative?

I just got back from vacation, so sorry for the late reply. Glad you updated the thread with your experience. :)

I have: one tattoo, planning two others, both tragus pierced, thinking about a prince albert. I really like body adornment. I love seeing how people make themselves more beautiful through modifying their bodies. There are of course exceptions to this. But it's their body, who am I to judge?

First tattoo will be on Friday, and I'm still not quite sure what I should get..

Only thing I do know for sure is that it will be video game related.. so I guess its a start.

I don't want to tell you how to live your life, so take what i'm about to say with as much weight as you'd like:

You should probably have the design for the tattoo decided on before making an appointment to get it done.

Make sure you know before Friday, you really should have known a while ago.

Fuck dude. Don't get inked on a whim.

Especially not with something as fucking vapid as video games, but that's just my personal opinion.

Tattoos are such a tough sell for someone as indecisive and generally apathetic toward things as myself. My wife has one that she loves (as do I, of course) and has made it no secret that she'd like me to get something done some day as well, but damn. I'm into it but it's just so...permanent. Some day I am going to fall off the toilet and hit my head and have a vision of exactly what I want, but until then I will spectate from over here.

I'm really envious of some of you guys'/girls' work, it's incredible.

Wow a Prince albert!

I wish my helix piercings would heal already. I want to change the rings the piercer put in.

Yep, as mentioned I thought I knew what I wanted, but there are so many amazing ideas to chose from. Think my main issues is thinking I can only choose one, when its really about what to get first.

I know a lot of people that aren't fans of video game related tattoos, but considering I've been playing some for 20+ years, it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Exactly. For me, a lot of videogame motives say so much more about me, my past and my memories than random fucking tribals, bible quotes or a giant ass wolf/skull/terminator arm.

I really don't get the dismissiveness against gaming tattoos from most people on this forum, must have some very meta reasons I guess.

(I do agree about the "don't get a tattoo on a whim" though. Also, take fucking care of it after it's done. Google what to do and what not to do, or you'll ruin it within days with bathing, sun and dirt. A good artist will tell you about this though)

People actually do that? Man my tattoos don't see the sun for at least six months and i never skip the sunscreen on them.

Side note: My tattooists have (nearly) all recommended a and a ointment (you usually use it on diaper rash) and it works beautifully.
