Digital Foundry: Destiny Beta XB1 analysis and PS4 comparison

Or maybe it was held back/gimped AND suffered from time constraints because they were busting their asses to get it to perform adequately on The One. This is the scenario I suspect and the one that I find most upsetting.

Then don't buy it?

This complaining is out of control. It's a game, play it and have fun.

whether or not the ps4 version should look better or shouldn't doesn't really matter.
What does matter is that if other games start coming out in the fall on ps4 that look significantly better, and offer a great gaming experience, then Bungie's 10 year plan will be more like a 3-month plan.

I don't expect this will be the case, but numbers don't lie.

The only thing that irritated me is when the dev from Bungie agreed to full parity in the interview with Ryan I-want-to-work-for-Microsoft-so-bad-I-can't-stand-it McCaffrey.

I think the same was said about CoD Advanced Warfare, too (I could be wrong though). If they do go the whole full parity route, it'll be the last two games I buy from Activision.

Didn't happen with all the other CoD games last gen (Black Ops II looked cleaner and had better looking sights on 360), I don't expect full parity this gen.

I like CoD.

it's possible all parties involved with these decisions are actually happy with how the game looks and performs on PS4

Of course, which is why i said IF Sony is not satisfied they should have sent people. Whatever the reason, if they are or not, them not sending people is on them. Sony fans who are not satisfied should let Sony know and see if they respond. Bungie obviously is satisfied and believes thats the best they can do. I mean what dev wants everyone to know that a platform owner had to send people to you (which implies that your people are more incompetent to theirs) to get the best out of your game?

I know if i were one of the programmers, thats the last thing I'd want because thats fucking embarrassing. If i could do what they could, I would have just done it, to prevent them from coming over and showing me up.

Another important thing to note is that given the game is being developed for four consoles, Bungie has too much on its plate to spend disproportionately large time on any one console without either contractual obligation or external help.

Looking at footage from last gen system, it's clear that almost all geometry was designed with PS3/360 mind. It's the lighting/shadows, LoD and textures that received upgrades. If there was ever a limiting factor, it's decision to make it a cross gen game. As aforementioned, the true sequel (not the interstitial DLC) for this game will finally show what they can do on the current gen platform (and perhaps then we may see a pronounced difference between PS4/XB1).

Unless there is some form of contractual obligation to do so the differences would be limited to whatever Bungie deems is inherent to the time spent developing the game on each platform. Also, it sounds like Bungie needed MS's help to improve performance to make it as good as the PS4 version. As such, if Bungie was comfortable with current PS4 tools, there was no reason to do the same with Sony and Sony seems happy with where the game is headed on their platform. After all, it is ultimately not a platform exclusive.

Personally, I am surprised that Sony didn't send someone to improve the eyesore real time shadow quality for PS3 version.

Sorry but happy seeing that their version of the game is being held back, losing advantage and the developer is not using the full power of the system?

Care to specify? Some are actually presenting a more well rounded point instead of one off sentences.

What's to specify? It's all over this thread. (edit, lol look below my post!)

PS4 is still more powerful. It's ok. Nobody should worry. The World is ending that maybe, just maybe the X1 can have a game that looks and plays the same as it's PS4 counterpart.

Heavens to Betsy. Imagine that. Bungie, awesome devs are able to make the game on the weaker X1 look just as good.

But let's scream out that Bungie is holding the PS4 version back. Pretty funny if you ask me. All the praise before the X1 version came out and now that it looks just as good as the PS4 version, here come the parity birds.

I love it.

All this does is make me imagine how good Destiny would look if it was PS4 exclusive. Parity for the sake of people who bought weaker, more expensive hardware is sad, and unnecessary. If a game looks and runs the same on both Xbone and PS4, then that means its developers left 40% of the resources available on PS4 unused. Which is a waste.

Back in the day when a C64 game got ported to Amiga, developers didn't limit themselves to 16 colors and 1MHz CPU speed, either.

I don't know if happy is the best choice of words, but they're certainly confident in it granted their marketing campaign.

I wish it was exclusive because then my 360 friends would be getting PS4s instead of X1s. Making Destiny a multiplat with no cross-platform character importing is really segregating the playerbase and separating friends.

From what I'm hearing, a lot of us are facing the same issue. Hardcore gamers going PS4 for the definitive version vs. Halo casuals going X1 for MCC.

This is the primary reason I'm getting Destiny on PS4. I see Destiny as a long-term investment, and as time goes on, I believe the "gap" between consoles will widen.

I also expect a lot more timed exclusives for PS4, and I hate waiting :p

Yep, wouldn't be surprised if your character transfers over to destiny 2.

Wait. You mean a developer doesn't take full advantage of the hardware in year one of a consoles life cycle?

Stop complaining. Bungie didn't hold the PS4 version back to make sure the Xbox One version was on par, they made the game how they wanted to, and it doesn't max out the capabilities on either machine.

Key things to remember:

  • PS4 has a higher install base
  • PS4 version is getting exclusive content
  • PS4 version still looks the best
  • Bungie has to cater to 4 install bases
The situation thus far indicates that Sony are satisfied with where things are at performance wise and perhaps realize that they any extra effort would not yield tangible gains in the field that matters most: Sales.

Those are the comments to ignore then. Loving it is something of other pertinence.

Who is even making this argument? You can use the quote function to make it unambiguous.

Not necessarily true. It would mean the PS4 version would have a lot more performance headroom, which means it could maintain its framerate in situations where the Xbox One version might experience slowdown.

Bungie is pushing art, not tech. Nothing about the game is technically gorgeous. The art of it definitely is.

It makes me smile that Bungie can code comfortably for the PS4 while requiring highly paid Microsoft engineers to optimize for their mess of a system. If the end result is similar, so be it. Its the artists that prevail.

My take on all the parity talk:
Bungie seems to be prioritizing framerate over everything, the game runs well on 360/PS3. The PS4 version at 1080p was what they wanted the next gen versions to look like. XBO couldn't hold locked 30fps at it so it was dropped to 900 but the 10% was enough to stabilize performance and now they're working to get it up to par with PS4.

I'd just like to see AA/AF improvements for the final game, if possible. That would let the art that's the heart of this game's visual design really shine.

But the art would look better if the aliasing and shimmering shadows were cleaned up.

We know that PS4 is the "lead" platform for Destiny. Maybe that just applies to marketing or exclusive partnerships; whatever.

However, why doesn't Destiny make use of the unique features of the DS4 controller? It does not use the mono speaker. It does not use the touch pad for swiping. Everyone has been wondering why we can't swipe up for ghost and swipe down to mount up.

Also, is there going to be a custom sound configuration for the Sony Gold wireless headset?

I'll bet anything you are going to be able to use the touchpad in retain on PS4. Huge oversight if not. It seems designed for it. Everyone was making such a big deal about it. Rumble triggers are my favorite feature of either console and the ONLY game I have noticed them in was DR3. Blew mi mind they were not in Titanfall...

I had to laugh at this.
your post would be so much better if it ended at the "I wish it was exclusive" bit.

:D

If 10% got the XB1 to parity with PS4, PS4's 40% is doing what? Hanging out at the Tower, dancing?

Could the game have looked better and had additional bells and whistles on ps4? Sure, why not. Does it really matter that much I n this case? No, not really especially since we can't change Bungie's business decision. Play the game on your platform of choice.

They probably easily hit their goals a long time ago on PS4, it's not pushing tech. I know there's a huge disparity between the platforms. XBO was probably almost able to get there but the performance wasn't up to Bungie's standards. They also needed to call in engineers to help them get the XBO version up to snuff.

PS4's power and ease of use allowed them to hit their goals easily. Their goals just weren't as high on the tech side as some were hoping.

When you need Papa Microsoft to fly in their programming superheroes that kind of implies you aren't that awesome when it comes to graphics. Bungie is not some indie Dev with 5 guys where that is common practice.

Bungie is RUINING friendships =(

Has anyone considered the alternative that Bungie was able to push more out of the Xbone's hardware because they got help specifically to do so? Optimization at a low-level is no-easy job. Perhaps since Sony did not send resources specifically to help optimize the PS4 version the same way Microsoft did for the Xbox One version, they pushed it as far as they could on their own?

And LOL at some of the replies to this thread.

Can't believe they downscaled the PS4 to 1080p to achieve parity. Such disappointment? Ghost edition cancelled.

It makes me laugh when people think of res and/or framerate as the only determining factors of parity. For example:

1080p 30fps @ ultra settings

1080p 30fps @ low settings

Both would be 1080p 30fps...yet they would look much different from each other. There are plenty of graphical effects that can be toned down/turned off in order to reach parity, not just res and framerate. I personally hope that Bungie take advantage of the more powerful console and implement a few extra graphical features. Some people are acting like PS4 gamers don't want X1 gamers to have a nice looking/running game, but I don't think it's about that, it's about wanting developers to use something they have paid a lot of money for to it's fullest potential. I see nothing wrong with wanting that.

it implies the console is difficult to develop for

The same could have been said about a myriad game devs whose PS3 ports were perceptively inferior to 360 one. These are new systems and the ESRAM has been the talk of town when it comes development challenges with regards to resolution. Given the tradition of XB1 versions of games being brought up in the popular media to be inferior to PS4 version this early on in the life cycle, factual processing power gap notwithstanding, MS, in all likelihood, are dispatching their in-house techs to ensure mitigation of performance difference for a title this big. It's a matter of improving real world performance and market perception.

I fucking hate the chromatic Aberration.

I love it.

I skimmed these portions of the thread. What exactly is Chromatic Aberration?

Red/blue fringes on stuff near the edges of the screen, including the UI. It's an optical phenomenon that happens when a material (like glass) has a different refractive index for different wavelengths of light, so the colors get separated when they pass through it. Some games have started using it to simulate the "camera" being behind the glass of your character's helmet.

Does it really matter if Destiny on PS4 is on par, not ahead of XBoxOne?

Destiny still looks great on my PS4 and I'm thrilled with the visuals.

Besides, the PS4 version is already the better version right out of the gate, because of the extra content. That makes up for even-tier graphics.

More game? Or more pixel power? Why not both?

It's not both, I'll take more game please. That's what PS4 owners get, instead.

hmm interesting. thanks

This is pretty common in the games industry...

Nvidia, AMD, Microsoft, Sony all do this.

Wow, the crying in this thread is terrible. Last week all ofyou loved the game and now it seems the game is crap now.

I guess it doesn't matter if its an amazing game if the p's and AA's aren't better on PS4

Nobody forces you to click on a thread that has "Digital Foundry" in its title.

it's possible some people with issues in this thread and the people that love the game last week aren't all the same people.
