Digital Foundry: Destiny Beta XB1 analysis and PS4 comparison

There seems to be more blaming on the Xbox One than on the 360/PS3. Think it's a given that the game would look better if it wasn't cross-gen. More power + more time to focus on new consoles.

No one is blaming the Xbox One on getting better. Some people are just not happy with the idea that extra space is being wasted.

Or maybe we were (and still are) also busting our asses on every other platform, too, going as far as to deploy patches and updates for graphical issues (and a myriad of others) mid stride during beta to make sure everyone has a great experience, and that we deliver something we're a proud of anywhere we ship Destiny.

That's not the drama you're looking for, but it is the truth. Every platform is different. Each has strengths and we aim to take advantage of ALL THE THINGS.

I missed Urk's post earlier and wanted to reemphasize it for the new page.

Looks like any version is really good from gfx, fps, stability and online. Some will have timed exclusive content as well.

That sounds like a win for nearly everyone. What's all the fuss and crying about?

Well it's not being wasted, which is good.

I remember a time when all PS3 owners such as myself wanted same performance for PS3 versions of multiplat games and now that the winds have changed it's not good enough. What gives (considering this is a cross-gen multiplat game)?

This doesn't make any sense.

yeah, I missed it too.

@Urk
be proud, game is very good and atmospheric. you guys are doing a good job.

Wow, its just video games man. Did u even really want the game at all?

All he did was cancel a videogame, what's your point?

Devs these days are making promises for things that aren't true. Just because a game releases with all the feature you want, that doesn't mean someone else wasn't promised something and then poof without a word it's missing. People like what they like. if a dev promises boomerangs, you pre-order a game for boomerangs, and then they're cut.... but most people don't care, that doesn't mean in general "it's not a big deal". To some people it is

That's sounds good to me. Why isn't this in the OP or something? I'm not mad at Bungie at all. I do think they are working hard to deliver their best game since you know what. I'm just not down with the notion that even if you think they could have been more done, you are being ridiculous for even suggesting such a opinion. But I say good job for Bungie coming though. I'm confident that when I play my game, I'm not even going to pay attention to anything but the fun so there that.

Urk's response is good enough for me. They're working hard and they'll take advantage of all the strengths of each platform. So, if the situation hasn't improved when the game launches, then we'll have a controversy on our hands. Quoted and saved.

That's definitely good to hear, so we can expect Bungie to take full advantage of the PS4? I'll definitely wait till a final analysis before deciding whether or not to jump in.

What the hell? This line of thinking is more common than I thought. You're playing video games dude. Get a PC if you want the absolute best graphics.

How's Destiny looking on PC?

To me, the CA kind of makes the game more immersive by making the HUD more diegetic, i.e. it actually exists as part of the game world in your character's helmet, rather than just being something that only exists for the convenience of me as a player.

CA makes you feel like you are looking at things cross-eyed. It's like you can never get a clear focus on an object on certain part of the screen even though other parts are in clear focus. Simulating double image is never a good thing. It makes you feel like you want to claw your eyes out lol.

Because urk just posted it after I sent him a PM asking for a post in this thread to clear up some confusion. (Dunno if my PM actually prompted the response, but I did send one.)

And yeah, I'm not refuting that the final versions will still look fairly similar, just that Bungie is lazy/paid off/following some evil parity clause, etc.

It's looking like a March release if you believe that SteamDB leak!

Heh, oh boy -- posts in here talking about "how the game could have looked if it was a PS4 exclusive" without failing to realize and/or mention that the game is being made for PS3 and 360 too. Funny but expected.

I agree and face palm but let's not cherry pick just that one side of the coin. Others are making equally unfocused points that contrast. Don't just read what you want to read. I would rather ignore those comments from both sides but let's not act as if it's just Sony people drive by posting or posting one off quick remarks which do little for good conversation.

There can be only one winner!!!

;p

Everyone who gets to play this wins.

Can you go a bit into the advantages of the Xbox one over the ps4? I think that would do a lot to help people understand why the game has parity across the two platforms. People only know the surface specs so from that view it does seem difficult to understand why the two games have complete parity as one of your coworkers claimed.

It's an early game during this current generation that's also cross gen; Just feel like the game using "all of the space" shouldn't have been expected.

Oh no, I agree that there's more stuff too. Just don't understand the logic when it comes to the example I gave.

Everyone who gets to play this wins.

I'm liking the beta so I agree.

I don't blame Bungie for much as getting 60 fps is allot of hard work optimising the CPU....

But FXAA is not acceptable in this day and age, its just lazy.

Saying each platform has strengths doesn't necessarily imply it's better than the PS4 in some areas, just that they're going to use the what's available to them. It could very easily refer to the resources freed up by the June SDK update, for example.

Baiting them into a trap... Now that's just mean.

Where's my create-a-dance mode that takes advantage of the superior motion control technology available on Kinect?

Fucking Bungie, not playing to the platform's strengths and forcing the Xbox systems to have parity with the weaker PS4.

:P

This is a super good idea! Gimme a few minutes to compile a list. Make sure you stick around as I'll be digging into religion and gun rights shortly after!

If there's any juice left over then how about bumping up the AA or oversampling? Would that conflict with parity?
We now have a developer in here saying that they will be taking advantage of all the platforms. This supersedes the previous statements made by Bungie representatives.

I think parity is good in this case. Its truly miraculous the game runs at 30 FPS locked on four different platforms. I was kidding about cancelling my pre order. I don't have time for gaming, but I will still buy Destiny and try to enjoy it between studies and work

Kinect. Rumble triggers. Darker deeper black color than the PS4 (the console, not the crushed ones).

I'm not a developer so I don't know the process but I'm pretty sure that adding others effects and processes isn't as easy as switching on a light. Which is why I shake my head that people expect the developers to drop whatever they're doing to add something with will maximize the power of that console. Calling them lazy because they didn't spend time and resources to push the system to the absolute max just isn't fair.

I think we all know that the real sin Bungie committed here was enforcing purple parity on the floaty-ball in the Tower. It should be Sony-blue on PlayStation and Microsoft-green on Xbox , dammit!

Exactly, where's my crazy dance parties!
