camera...this is another reason I think the PS3 is also getting at least a firmware update and the PS3 refresh might be getting hardware updates too. Sony is big into cameras.....
Freedom of use coming, in the UK it's legal to rip a copy protected DVD for personal use in the home but in the US it's illegal. What's coming will allow storing and creating a library of movies and TV programs to view in the home or on the road.
I was told and a Google search sorta confirmed that the UK was OK with this. In rereading, it's a suggestion to lawmakers not the law.Errrr.... the UK legalised format shifting last week, but it didn't legalise breaking the DRM to do so.
There is a provision in there to appeal to the Secretary of State about that, but until it happens nobody knows what he would do - it's very (very) unlikely the answer will be that DRM circumvention is legalised.
So no.
Whelp.
Now I am definitely going to return that unopened PS4 laying collecting dust in my game room, and wait for this version... and hopefully some games to make it worth opening up.
Why on earth would you buy a console and not even see if it works?
You would be surprised how many people here do just that.
...but it really should appear before us in this form:
You can get a 1TB SSHD for pretty cheap, cheaper than any new model would be anyway. I have one in the PS3, will get one for PS4 as soon as 2TB+ ones are made/cheapish. I love it on the PS3, it's like half the speed improvement of an SSD at 1/4th the price.
You can do it yourself in few minutes. Warranty wont be broken.
I was just looking for an excuse to buy another PS3. If the next revision has more USB's, AC wi-fi or a big hard drive it might justify it for me.
I couldn't justify the last revision. It had nothing over my slim.
Hopefully the new PS4 will run a bit cooler. I've heard that the current one produces a lot of heat.
Maybe a price drop will be on the way? It really needs one, especially here in Canada.

This is nice and all, but it's a bit prematurely capped considering the same FCC has just about killed net neutrality. Don't you think that decision will arbitrarily limit some of the benefit of these features?Because EVERYTHING will either a DLNA server or client on your home network. Blu-ray players will be both server and client (planned for the XB1 and PS4), Game consoles will advertise themselves as DLNA Game servers....there is a rumor that a Xbox Mini will be a game server on the home network and I think a PS3 refresh the same.
It's part of the connected home that starts this year! It is huge and a revolution in how we can view the media that comes into our home.
The FCC mandate requiring cable TV companies to first have DVRs that are DLNA CVP2 servers also mandates that the media be in a form that is recordable. The PS4 and XB1 can act as DVRs on Cable as well as OTA. The feature adding a 15 minute game recording loop will also be used as a REW feature for OTA and Cable TV.
Gesh......this is so obvious if you have been following HTML5 and DLNA.

Man, I wish I had the kind of money that I could spend $400 on something I don't plan on using.
I'd buy another Xbox One or PS4 if they cut the disc drives from them.
I still have a first generation PS3. It sounds like I'm in a wind tunnel whenever I use it. I am pretty excited that there might be a new one on the way because the last one that they brought out was so cheap and I hated that sliding door disc system.
I think they can. If the rumor is true that they will release a PS3 with a 22nm Cell and a 28nm RSX, then it's energy consumption during full load will probably be around 45-50W, and that's what the first PS2 Slim model consumed too IIRC.Hopefully they can get the PS3 Super Ultra Turbo Slim DX down to PS2 Slim size. I'd probably triple dip.

And if this happens, then I will buy a new PS3 for sure (and a 1TB drive if not included). I've waited for an energy efficient PS3 for years, not to mention my old 40GB model make a lot of noise, so annoying.
Super Slim overheated on me and just felt cheap all together. I bought a used Slim after and it has been reliable so far. I'd be open to a new PS3 model if it looks cool and runs more efficiently. There are still a ton of great games for the system and don't see abandoning it any time soon.
You really enjoy downloading 50 GB games that much?
Your likely correct and that will be a Maximum power Game mode. If it's to also be a certified DLNA CVP2 platform then it is required to have other power saving modes. The PS3 supports a low power network standby using a ARM CPU which is also used as a timer for early morning firmware updates. I don't know if the power level meets EU network standby requirements and the PS3 OS isn't instantly available which would be convenient if it's to support incoming Skype calls or Connected Home APPs. (PS4 second custom chip has 256 Megs of memory and is always on as it supports several power modes.)I think they can. Everything in bold is needed for DLNA CVP2, PS-Now and Multi-player games are a side benefit of WebRTC support required by DLNA CVP2.With WebRTC - Faster Applications = lowering latency
Multiplayer Gaming
File Sharing
Remote Control
Second Screens
Content Delivery
Still waiting for wifi AC on ps4.
Kinda obvious that a refresh lowers costs but it's another confirmation supporting the OP: New PS4 and PS3 Models Revealed by Certification Request Filed by Sonyhttp://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/08/06/could-a-cheaper-sony-ps4-kill-microsofts-xbox-one.aspx said:Sony (NYSE: SNE ) expects lower PS4 hardware costs to lead to higher operating income, the company said in its first-quarter earnings report. As a result, Sony now has the option to continue reaping higher profits or boost sales volume by reducing prices.

News just in from gamescom…
Ps3
- higher capacity flash memory 32/64 GB
Ps4
- reduction of 16 ram chips to 8
- larger hdd
It would be nice if I finally got one of my predictions right.
I know it's not happening but just imagine PS4 gets PS3/2 backwards compatibility with the newest 22nm cell. I'd pay gladly 100€ over the standard PS4 to get that.
That'd be a shut up and take my money moment.
So apparently Pocketnews has a new CUH-1100 model PS4 and has compared it to the previous model.
According to Dutch site Tweakers (http://tweakers.net/nieuws/99236/revisie-ps4-heeft-gewijzigde-heatsink.html), the following was changed among other things. I don't understand many technicalities
- Memory changed from ddr3-1600 to ddr3l-1833 (lower power usage)
- Changed heat sink and changed power supply towards the CPU and GPU
- Lower weight (2700g vs 2750g)
- Mainboard was type SAA-001, now SAB-001
- The 8-bit-mcu by STMicroelectronics was removed, perhaps made obsolete by the Marvell CXD90025G-asic?
- AMD APU changed from CXD90026G to CXD90026AG
Ah they're talking about the memory that supports the sub processor, the Marvell CXD90025G apparently, will update. The PS4 has GDDR5 memory, no?
Doesn't seem like a redesign then? Hopefully it's out by February but if not I won't be bothered by getting a PS4 for Bloodborne.
Yep and extra 2gb DDR3 too for reserved OS low power thing. The PS4 has GDDR5 memory, no?
