New PS4 and PS3 Models Revealed by Certification Request Filed by Sony

Hopefully the new PS4 will run a bit cooler. I've heard that the current one produces a lot of heat.

Maybe a price drop will be on the way? It really needs one, especially here in Canada.

camera...this is another reason I think the PS3 is also getting at least a firmware update and the PS3 refresh might be getting hardware updates too. Sony is big into cameras.....

You think Sony will change the PS3 hardware to support a feature literally a handful of cameras support and no one uses? I think you should stop with the crazy "seven degrees of separation" with digital devices and features. Almost everything you predict is incorrect.

DLNA is an industry standard and yes the PS4 will support it. The reason they are so slow to roll it out is because Sony knows the number of people who use it is small. If you are going to use resources to develop and test features, they are going to go with new social media driven stuff, not archaic local media sharing.

Pretty cool stuff. My bet is that they reduce costs, keep it the same price over the holidays, maybe a value add like some free PSN+ coupons or a game. If MS makes any headway this holiday which is unlikely given that machines trajectory worldwide they can always drop the price to spur on sales after reaping the rewards over the holidays.

Its a shame I have to endure a bunch of stupid dragon balls z shit in every hardware thread. It has never added anything to the conversation.

Freedom of use coming, in the UK it's legal to rip a copy protected DVD for personal use in the home but in the US it's illegal. What's coming will allow storing and creating a library of movies and TV programs to view in the home or on the road.

Errrr.... the UK legalised format shifting last week, but it didn't legalise breaking the DRM to do so.

There is a provision in there to appeal to the Secretary of State about that, but until it happens nobody knows what he would do - it's very (very) unlikely the answer will be that DRM circumvention is legalised.

So no.

Whelp.

Now I am definitely going to return that unopened PS4 laying collecting dust in my game room, and wait for this version... and hopefully some games to make it worth opening up.

Why on earth would you buy a console and not even see if it works?

They should just stack 4 PS4s together for 32GB GDDR5.

...but it really should appear before us in this form:

You can get a 1TB SSHD for pretty cheap, cheaper than any new model would be anyway. I have one in the PS3, will get one for PS4 as soon as 2TB+ ones are made/cheapish. I love it on the PS3, it's like half the speed improvement of an SSD at 1/4th the price.
You can do it yourself in few minutes. Warranty wont be broken.

I was just looking for an excuse to buy another PS3. If the next revision has more USB's, AC wi-fi or a big hard drive it might justify it for me.

I couldn't justify the last revision. It had nothing over my slim.

I still have a first generation PS3. It sounds like I'm in a wind tunnel whenever I use it. I am pretty excited that there might be a new one on the way because the last one that they brought out was so cheap and I hated that sliding door disc system.

They won't add anything, they want to save money.

I still dream of an HDMI-only PS3 with no AV-out, one USB and ethernet only.

Make that thing as small, cool and power-efficient as possible.

Wonder if they fix dat wobble and release a much better quality controller?

I was told and a Google search sorta confirmed that the UK was OK with this. In rereading, it's a suggestion to lawmakers not the law.

It has been passed now, explicitly (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/changes-to-copyright-exceptions), but only as of a few weeks ago.

However, it only legalises the action of making a copy - it doesn't remove the offence of breaking the DRM. Therefore it is only legal to make a copy of media that doesn't have DRM on it, unless the Secretary of State pre-approves it. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploa.../file/314995/copyright-guidance-consumers.pdf

Please not a new PS3 model. It's about time to stop producing stuff for PS3 and begin to really push PS4 technology. And i am saying this as a PS3 and PS4 owner.

Because EVERYTHING will either a DLNA server or client on your home network. Blu-ray players will be both server and client (planned for the XB1 and PS4), Game consoles will advertise themselves as DLNA Game servers....there is a rumor that a Xbox Mini will be a game server on the home network and I think a PS3 refresh the same.

It's part of the connected home that starts this year! It is huge and a revolution in how we can view the media that comes into our home.

The FCC mandate requiring cable TV companies to first have DVRs that are DLNA CVP2 servers also mandates that the media be in a form that is recordable. The PS4 and XB1 can act as DVRs on Cable as well as OTA. The feature adding a 15 minute game recording loop will also be used as a REW feature for OTA and Cable TV.

Gesh......this is so obvious if you have been following HTML5 and DLNA.
This is nice and all, but it's a bit prematurely capped considering the same FCC has just about killed net neutrality. Don't you think that decision will arbitrarily limit some of the benefit of these features?

Super Slim overheated on me and just felt cheap all together. I bought a used Slim after and it has been reliable so far. I'd be open to a new PS3 model if it looks cool and runs more efficiently. There are still a ton of great games for the system and don't see abandoning it any time soon.

When was the cost the same as the the system it will be put in considered cheap for a 1TB SSHD?

I'm actually happy to hear that there may be a new PS3 revision as I want to keep one around for PS+ games and Rock Band, as well as to use as a BD player to avoid wear and tear on my PS4. My original 60 died over a year ago, and the slim I replaced it with is showing telltale signs of a dying BD drive, so it won't be long before I'm in the market. I'm hoping for some good Black Friday news on PS3's this year, whether it's a new SKU or not.

My fat ps3 looks like it will ylod soon. I'd be all over a newer version than super slim.

I have the white destiny ps4 preordered, so a new ps4 isn't doing anything for me unless it's announced soon.

Same here.

I'd be sold on the slot loading tray. I'm pretty sure any design will be better than the super slim. Truly an ugly machine.

Hopefully they can get the PS3 Super Ultra Turbo Slim DX down to PS2 Slim size. I'd probably triple dip.
I think they can. If the rumor is true that they will release a PS3 with a 22nm Cell and a 28nm RSX, then it's energy consumption during full load will probably be around 45-50W, and that's what the first PS2 Slim model consumed too IIRC.

And if this happens, then I will buy a new PS3 for sure (and a 1TB drive if not included). I've waited for an energy efficient PS3 for years, not to mention my old 40GB model make a lot of noise, so annoying.

That would be great. I'd take a small external PSU for that size PS3 too. I guess with 2.5" HDD getting it to PS2 Slim size might be tricky..

I've had my ps3 slim since December 2009 and I've never had a problem with it. *knocks on wood*

I know it's not happening but just imagine PS4 gets PS3/2 backwards compatibility with the newest 22nm cell. I'd pay gladly 100€ over the standard PS4 to get that.

That'd be a shut up and take my money moment.

You really enjoy downloading 50 GB games that much?

The one time download makes much more sense than fetching and maintaining a disc for the rest of your life. That disc will take up as much relative space now as it will for eternity. 50GB in ten years time will feel the same way that downloading 50MB does today.

To answer your question - Yes, I really enjoy being future-proof. I enjoy how forward-thinking I am now and I'll enjoy the fact that one day in the far future I'll have my entire console library of this generation taking up a very small amount of cloud storage relative to that moment.

So, you really enjoy retrieving, storing and maintaining a disc and case that much?

Your likely correct and that will be a Maximum power Game mode. If it's to also be a certified DLNA CVP2 platform then it is required to have other power saving modes. The PS3 supports a low power network standby using a ARM CPU which is also used as a timer for early morning firmware updates. I don't know if the power level meets EU network standby requirements and the PS3 OS isn't instantly available which would be convenient if it's to support incoming Skype calls or Connected Home APPs. (PS4 second custom chip has 256 Megs of memory and is always on as it supports several power modes.)

Dan Ristic @dristic101 Mar 18 2014 Great first day at Sony today. Excited to make the PlayStation experience better along with @don_olmstead

Dan Ristic was very involved with WebRTC. "He is passionate about front-end engineering" = Developing the framework applications use on the PlayStation platforms. Don Olmstead wrote the WebGL UI framework for the PS4 not the actual UI.

With WebRTC - Faster Applications = lowering latency

File Sharing
Remote Control
Second Screens
Content Delivery
Everything in bold is needed for DLNA CVP2, PS-Now and Multi-player games are a side benefit of WebRTC support required by DLNA CVP2.

Playstation experience = Every connected Playstation platform including the PS3? That would require a significant firmware update changing the basic XMB functionality to match the PS4. If the PS3 is to be a DLNA CVP2 platform then this is likely. The PS3 is already a RVU platform which is the uncertified Pixel UI (Picture UI) version of RUI - DLNA CVP2 which uses a HTML5 UI and must be certified.

I speculated that this would be the case but it's up to Sony, there might be memory, power or security issues that prevent this. I've speculated a refreshed PS3 would have these issues corrected as I believe the PS3 has more life in third world countries and all STBs that work with ATSC 2.0 or the EU and Asian equivalent as well as Next generation Cable TV will need to be DLNA CVP2 certified. IF the PS3 can't support DLNA CVP2 then it's at a serious disadvantage compared to the other Game Consoles that are being released at the end of this year...essentially it's dead.

Sony (NYSE: SNE ) expects lower PS4 hardware costs to lead to higher operating income, the company said in its first-quarter earnings report. As a result, Sony now has the option to continue reaping higher profits or boost sales volume by reducing prices.
Kinda obvious that a refresh lowers costs but it's another confirmation supporting the OP: New PS4 and PS3 Models Revealed by Certification Request Filed by Sony

Edit: The PS3 Slim was announced at Gamescom, could the same happen with the new PS4 & PS3?
PlayStation 3 now $299, slimmer version coming September 1st Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Aug 18, 2009 // Sr. Social Media Manager
News just in from gamescom…

Too bad we don't have a Super_Secret to leak information like he did on the PS3 Slim and Firmware 3.0.

Ps3
- higher capacity flash memory 32/64 GB

Ps4
- reduction of 16 ram chips to 8
- larger hdd

It would be nice if I finally got one of my predictions right.

Yeah, and then that whole 64GB of flash memory get's disabled if you put in a hard drive. What a god damn waste.

I would absolutely be on board with this.

So apparently Pocketnews has a new CUH-1100 model PS4 and has compared it to the previous model.

According to Dutch site Tweakers (http://tweakers.net/nieuws/99236/revisie-ps4-heeft-gewijzigde-heatsink.html), the following was changed among other things. I don't understand many technicalities ;)

- Changed heat sink and changed power supply towards the CPU and GPU
- Lower weight (2700g vs 2750g)
- Mainboard was type SAA-001, now SAB-001
- The 8-bit-mcu by STMicroelectronics was removed, perhaps now obsolete by the Marvell CXD90025G-asic sub processor (speculated by Tweakers, don't know)
- Memory changed from ddr3-1600 to ddr3l-1833 (lower power usage) (for the Marvell CXD90025G-asic sub processor, not main memory)
- AMD APU changed from CXD90026G to CXD90026AG

The PS4 has GDDR5 memory, no?

Doesn't seem like a redesign then? Hopefully it's out by February but if not I won't be bothered by getting a PS4 for Bloodborne.

I want a tiny little PS3 on a chip that I can connect using the the PS4 camera port so I can play all my PlayStation 3 downloads on the PS4.

No chance in hell of happening though.

Yeah if it was a full redesign the starting number would probably be CUH-2xxx. Sticking with CUH-1xxx usually means internal revisions more than anything else

Well I might as well wait till this new PS4 model is out then, there's really nothing that's a must have for me until Bloodborne anyway.
