Doctor Who Series 8 |OT| We've fucking time-travelled, yes?

Very amusing that after all neonvisual's attention whoring they went with the guy who came up with something original without much fanfare.

I assume it's another 13, but I suppose it's also an opportunity for Moffat or a future writer to remove the limit, now that it's been addressed.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if that happens within the next 5 Doctors, assuming the show stays popular. It would definitely divide the fandom though haha.

Not watching the title sequence, I like to watch it for the first time when I start a new series. I'm sure I'll like it, I love pretty much all of them haha.

Doctor Who will never die. It's too big at this point. There will be a time when it will go off air (it happens to every show), but the books/comics/audio adventures will always continue. And then it will come back to the small or big screen at some point. It's a cultural institution, there will always be someone, somewhere, writing these things, even when it's not as popular as it is now anymore.

And yes, limit or not, there's always a way to write around it. Doctor Who doesn't really have any hard rules that can't be changed in some way or other. Whatever the narrative demands can happen.

That title sequence is pretty sweet, can't wait to see it in proper HD. And minus chatty people (says the ungrateful fan).

Dem Capaldi eyes. Totally the new bowtie.

I kind of miss the fanfare from Smith's themes. :(

This seems to be taking a back to basics approach, with a lot of people saying that it reminds them of Dominic Glynn's theme, very creepy and weedy. It also seems to keep the drums from the Day of The Doctor theme.

MUST HEAR IT IN STEREO.

Title sequence looks genuinely impressive, but I kind of miss the upbeat song from Tennant's era.

Tennant's was definitely the best by far. Smith's was just there. This one sounds... different, very "alien" and synth-ish. I like it, can't wait to actually listen to it.

This new one is great, and appears more stripped back, but I do miss how ridiculous and jam-packed Tennant's theme got in Series 4. In a sense it very much matched where he and RTD went in that respect. It was a very loud and shouty theme, as that series of the show was. The crazy drums, the piano harmony, the harsher sound on the strings climbing up and down... and plus that the main melody was outright sampling the original Derbyshire reel.

I don't think we've had a bad arrangement, really. I'd rank them Tennant S4 > Smith 7b > Eccleston/Tennant > DOTD > Smith 5-7a, personally.

Nerdy fannish question is... Will we get the middle 8 in the credits? Apart from two occasions, Day of the Doctor and, weirdly, The Beast Below, Moffat has utterly failed us on this one, whereas RTD gave us 3 solid series' of it. I miss that bit of the theme. I'm not sure the 7b arrangement even has a version with it in.

The middle 8 always gets me very excited.
I liked that it was included in the end credits during the RTD era but it should be part of the opening again, it's the "fuck yeah" moment of the theme, every time I listen to a version of the Doctor Who theme I wait for the middle eight and when it's done I go back and listen to it again. After watching the new credits (pretty good btw) I just spend 15 minutes on youtube getting my middle eight fix.

In fairness, apart from the TV Movie, has it ever been part of the opening?

I really wish they'd strip it all the way back to something sparse, like Grainer/Derbyshire's original, or just go all techno about it (ala Orbital). Still, enjoyable, even if the intro could go either way.

I'm starting to get really hyped for this season. Everything just feels right from what I'm seeing so far.

I was going to be excited anyways but I'm fucking hyped for Capaldi.

Season 4 done. Good bye, Tennant. You will be missed. Overall, the finale didn't leave a huge impression on me....I'd rank it better than season 1 or 3's finale. Some notes:

1) As much as I hate Doctor Who recycling villains over and over again, The Master was so much better here in season 4 than season 3. I didn't care for his superpowers much, but his personality was great. This guy is supposed to be a lil' crazy, a little tortured, but in season 3 he acted like an exact copy of the Doctor. His personality was a carbon copy, his motives were spoken of only once, and he was just overall awful. In season 4, he acted a lot more like how one hearing the drumming since childhood would act. I really enjoyed him. However....the plot with the mender machine felt soooo out-of-nowhere, let's just drop it in randomly kind of a thing.

2) While I hated Tennant's long, drawn out goodbye to everyone, I absolutely loved his scene with Wilfred when he has to swap places. His childlike anger at realizing what was coming was great....the Doctor has been damn boring to me throughout the seasons, and every sign of emotion seems so fake and without heart. I could never connect when he has been angry, or sad, etc. This season had multiple times I connected. I'm not sure if it was due to good writing, acting, or both. Or if it was due to bad acting, bad writing, or both that made most attempts in the previous seasons seem terrible?

3) I'm still convinced they retroactively destroyed a bit of the beauty of the Doctor's ending with Rose, and for what felt like no reason.

4) As far as I'm concerned, Wilfred is the best companion. I'll miss you, soldier.

I'd love some feedback/comments/discussion (if there is any to be had).

I just get the feeling this series is where they get the formula for Nu Who just right.

Nice write up. Always cool to see new guys making their way through. With opinions like that you'll fit in well around here :)

What's the Middle 8?

That four knocks scene is, imo, the single best scene of the entire show. How it's written, how it's directed, and especially Tennant's performance, which is also the best piece of acting in the whole show.
