Thread title should be updated to indicate the seriousness of the current situation or a new thread made. Just hope nobody makes a stupid decision with a firearm :|

Sweet. And all we had to do was destroy and loot some private property? I mean, if I knew that's what it would take to get whitey's attention I would have started advocating that a lot sooner. It's good to know these shortcuts in case you get tired of begging politicians for reform.

Awesome shortcut to building resentment and reinforcing hater stereotypes even in wake of the actual victim's family denouncement of these actions, that is. Rims and Nike tennis shoes? I mean shit.

I'm pretty sure there are rich white neighborhoods they could have gone to loot, graffiti, whatever the fuck, e.t.c. but they ended up shitting up the neighborhoods their little brothers and sisters will grow up in. This story was already national news BEFORE this shit happened. Peaceful protest isn't always the answer but these people were counterproductive. When the main news channels come on today they're gonna report on the lootings as much if not more than the actual incident.

At least it's trending on Twitter.

Well I guess the heavy emphasis on coverage is over because the local channel is doing weather now lol

I think that's just an ongoing thing. Earlier tonight they took a break for weather and regular news, then just went back to riot coverage.

FBI confirmed to be involved.

I think a conviction is gonna happen (for the initial murder, obviously a fuckload of convictions will happen with regards to the looting).
No it won't, and tonight's nonsense makes it even less likely. I'd imagine vetters are combing the kid's social media pages right now looking for ways to paint him as violent and tar the community as well.

The headline and broadcast says "teenager" hoo boy. Some people lol. Dat narrative establishing url.

I don't see a problem, though. He was 18, so it's fair to describe him both as legally an adult man and as a teenager. I could be mistaken, but I've heard him described as an 18-year old several times today.

Nancy Grace wants to know, "Did he smoke weed?"

Wow this situation just went from sad to even sadder. Someone lost their life senselessly and some fools use this as cover to ruin other peoples lives by rioting and looting. It is a shame. I wonder what what made the peaceful protest go from being peaceful to being violent? It seems like the people their got caught up in mob mentality.

Wow went to bed last night and wake up to see some idiots have taken to rioting and looting. In their own area as well. ffs.

Perfect way to undermine any good work the guys family had done over the weekend. The police will happily watch people burn and loot then just round people up the next day.

Win/win for them. You destroy your neighbourhood and they still get to arrest you later on.

St. Louis police execute 17-year old isn't serious enough?

The only issue I could possibly see with the thread title are a few factual inaccuracies. It is my understanding that it was Ferguson MO police, not St. Louis police. Also, he may have actually been an 18 year old adult rather than a 17 year old minor. Although, I'm not sure if this is confirmed or not.

However, I'm generally an opponent to thread title changes, personally. It's not up to me, though. If I had it my way, a thread could only be changed at the behest of the OP, as long as nothing written violates the ToS. On the other hand, I see why mods would feel the need to change a thread title that has false/inaccurate information, so it doesn't derail the discussion or cause multiple threads with competing narratives.

Great move there, handful of rioting dudes. Definitely the best way to have your voice heard.

Should've just stuck to the 'hands up' thing. That made some great imagery that could be understood at a glance.

The "hands up" gesture is still being used. The rioters/looters and protestors are two different groups.

A picture some idiot uploaded of his friend, captioned "Had to cause hell for some yellow tail lol my nigga"

If the rioting was targeted it would be one thing, but the random chaos really does little but to serve the police narrative. They can sit back and let the media conflate the protesters and rioters into the same group, meanwhile the community gets poorer and the cops get to bust a bunch of people when it's all over.

Must be awkward when a rioter visits the liquor store they rioted a week later in order to get some doritos.

These riots will only serve to strengthen views such as "look at these brutes, they don't even care about their community so why should anyone care about them?"

Local police might resort to a hands off approach for a while as local shops and homes burning will only vindicate them, I believe the black community as a whole will only suffer from these incidents. The problem is that there really is no easy way out, only large protests nationwide and raising public awareness would help.

Just as a note, MLK wasn't a pacifist, he argued many times in favor of the use of violence towards self-defense against injustice if necessary.

His disagreement with Malcom X and others was on the effectiveness of various protest tactics.

EDIT: Ghandi also said in not so many words that if it was anybody else but the UK with its history of liberalism he would have had to turn to violence.

Yeah. I get so fucking sick of people treating MLKJ like a plush doll that says "I have a dream" when you pull the string on his back. The government was fucking terrified of this man for a reason.

Oh and this is your weekly reminder that the King Estate filed a lawsuit alleging the government assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. and they won.

"A Riot is the language of the unheard"-Martin Luther King Jr.
Does the same apply to plundering grocery and liquor stores(i.e. stealing)? Is that some kind of political statement too? Does it fit the defitinition of rioting or isn't it just hooliganism?

It's a pretty common attribute of riots. Breaking a riot down to its separate components and labeling them as individual crimes in order to avoid acknowledging what they obviously coalesce into is a lazy, unconvincing argument.

The rioting is deplorable IMO. We need a refresher in the principles of non-violence. Make your oppressors choke on your nobility, don't feed their paranoia.

I'm well aware that riots are a result and expression of public displeasure and often due to their nature exhibit disorganized behaviour, but saying that it's a pretty common attribute to perform acts of violence and vandalism not against authority, but in most cases private property and other civilians, sounds like a poort and unconvincing attempt to justify disruptive or unlawful behavior.

I think what has happened to that boy is an absolute tragedy.

But the fact that people use that as an excuse to loot and riot is also just the worst, honestly they say that a riot is the voice of the unheard.

But why should people listen to those who can't construct a better argument than just to riot and steal from fellow members of a suffering community.

Fight those that bind us, not the community that shield us.

King still faltered in some areas, he let the religion and message of pacifism over take the his overall message of equality imo. he should've been much more Mandela in his heyday, violence first then you talk about peace. there was this expectancy from him to be civil toward a country that had been anything but civil. MLK's message was only so effective in bringing about change, a lot of underlying problems with American racism needed to be delt with in the ways Stokely Carmichael and Malcom X had discussed. their messages were more about America getting it's shit together first and then coming to the table to talk with black America. Stokely Carmichael made a famous statement in his Berkeley speech saying "I maintain that every civil rights bill in this country was passed for white people, not for black people.", there's A LOT of truth in that statement.

a police involved shooting occurred at the Canfield Green apartment complex in the 2900 block of Canfield. A teenager was shot and killed. An officer from the Ferguson Police Department was involved in the shooting.

Look at that weasely bullshit. Just like that article someone posted a week or two ago. Passive voice out the wazoo. The journalist who wrote this should be fired. How about "a cop shot a kid." You know, actually saying what happened as concisely and directly as possible.

Reminds me of how neighborhoods in DC got destroyed by black protests in the 60's and never got better until gentrification. Before the riots they were huge bastions of black and minority-owned businesses... and they torched the futures of generations of city-livers.

It's self-destructive behavior that keeps people in poverty.

That will get you shot no matter what color you are. Is this confirmed or just rumor? If true, are protestors in denial that the kid got violent?

The usual "he wouldn't do something like that / doesn't sound like him". Unfortunately it sounds both like someone panicking, and what a corrupt officer might say to cover his butt.

The police narrative literally makes no sense. The first shot was in the squad car when the kid struggled for the gun. Well, how the fuck did he do that when he was cuffed? Furthermore, why was he dead some 30 feet from the cop car? Why was he shot in the back? Why so many shots for an unarmed teen? Finally, why was he being arrested in the first place?

And that before we get to the horrific lapses in logic like, Why the fuck was his fucking body left to fucking rotting in the fucking middle of the fucking street? What the actual fuck.
