Depression isn't a sickness lessened by money and fame. The latter if anything can just exacerbate it, as famous people suffering from depression have to put on a facade for millions.

So true.

Montel Williams has been using his twitter soapbox to shine a little light on the subject today. Hopefully others will as well. It's not a subject that many seem comfortable talking about, unfortunately.

It's such a shame. He was great. I just watched World's Greatest Dad. A kinda depressing movie given the circumstances but Robin Williams' acting really shines through in this one. RIP.

Damn, learned this coming back from work.

Would be nice to see people not advertising the idiocy that is inevitable on fb/twitter one of these days. Those idiots don't need their shit broadcasted to a larger audience.

Thats the thing though, his didn't seem like a facade. And I rarely believe that about anyone. So now I feel like if even he was faking it, were all fucked.

Official statement from Disney.

We’re deeply saddened by the loss of Robin Williams, a wonderfully gifted man who touched our hearts and never failed to make us laugh. An incredible actor and a comedic genius, Robin will always be remembered for bringing some of the world’s favorite characters to life, from his zany alien on ABC’s Mork & Mindy to the irascible genie in Disney’s Aladdin. He was a true Disney Legend, a beloved member of our family, and he will be sorely missed. We join Robin’s friends and fans everywhere in mourning, and offer our thoughts and condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Terribly sad. A wonderfully gifted, incredibly funny man whose talent will be missed but beyond that, and to embrace mob mentality for a moment he was, bluntly, one of us. Always a celebrity to embrace his love of games and not shy from it - and without looking like he was simply fishing for street cred for it - he was real. He'll be missed.

That what I was thinking. It makes me wonder if everyone is depressed. Maybe all (or just most of) the happy people are just pretending to be happy. I know I pretend. It's terrifying to think how many friends and family may be doing the same thing.

He always seemed like a wonderful guy. I was obsessed with Jumanji as a kid.

I'm going to watch one of his films tonight, I only have Good Will Hunting and What Dreams May Come, I'll flip a coin.

RIP.

Lord knows how many times I watched Jumanji during my childhood years.

Both him and Paul Walker gone... Very sad times.

I never post in threads like this but this one is a real heart-breaker.
Really shocking news. When I was a youngster I must have watched his live videos hundreds of times, he was my first favourite US comedian years before I got to discover the other American greats he was my favourite. Seemed like a lovely guy as well.
RIP.

Not to mention every stranger he met probably expected him to make them laugh.

Hugh Laurie is another well known comedian who battles depression.
One thing I always noticed about him was that every promo interview he did, even if it was for a serious film, he was always ON. He was doing his comedy act every time, never just relaxed and off the cuff. Maybe he loved doing that, but he seemed like a complex guy and I always saw him doing the circus act when I wouldn't have minded him showing his casual side.

I grew up watching his movies, I'm so heartbroken right now.

Rest in peace, Mr. Williams.

What a piece of news to read right before going to sleep... I can't believe this.

I wonder if we will ever know who the real Robin Williams was. Who was the man who was suffering enough to allegedly commit suicide?
