Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

Activity feed that is not filled with ads and actually really cool to check on friends achievements and videos. Instant resume to where you left the game at. Switching from TV to a game. Nah. Most of the things your mentioned have nothing to do with playing the game for me. And the UI feels like it needs the Kinect in order to be navigated easily since it wasn't (IMO) designed very well. I still prefer my PS4. I like to just play games without the distraction of the snap features. =/

Xbox love:
- kinect redemption of codes (I wish I could get QR codes delivered via email because I buy XBL credit a lot)
- boot to TV. Only just arrived in the preview, but finally I can keep the DVR connected to the Xbox. My wife was not happy with it before.
- notifications over TV. Being only an occasional multiplayer gamer, having notifications pop up on the TV is fantastic, and really lowers the barrier to gaming and makes it much easier to jump in. Also, Brazil Now showed me how cool apps could be even just using them for notifications.
- IR remote support. Great feature, letting me fully integrate with eg a harmony. Means I don't need to buy the media remote and can still turn on/off and control media playback without needing a controller on or using voice.
- voice control. More a 'that's nice' the a love, but I like 'Xbox on', and being able to pause or mute the TV when away from the remote has come in handy - especially when you're trying to get kids to the dinner table :)
- pins. I like how you can have a page of your own stuff.

Xbox hate:
- "Xbox turn off". Pretty much the only voice command tat is entirely unreliable for me. I ended up digging out an old harmony just so I could have a button press to shut everything off at night. I thought I was supposed to need fewer remotes?
- everything is an app. Makes things feel less seamless when you're bouncing between apps to do one thing. The preview dashboard with quests etc jumps you to about three different apps for questionnaires etc.
- inception dashboard. When you have something snapped and then press home, and you have tiles all over, and the main image is two smaller images. Urgh
- why can't I unsnap easily without voice? If I snap an app, why can't I just press the menu button in that window and have 'unsnap' as the first option? I have kinect so end up using voice, but I don't know how you do it with a controller.
- no button for recording video. Yes 'Xbox record that' is cool. But I play a lot at night and so I need button backup. Snapping gameDVR blah blah is no solution. Presumably MS will fix this now that they don't have kinect in all SKUs?
- no screenshot function. I take screenshots way more than video clips, this is a big missing feature for me.
- super slow installs. Did they hire the guy that did the PS3 installs?
- snap. Waste of time as far as I'm concerned. Takes up valuable space and makes my games smaller. The only time I wanted to use it to keep an eye on TV while grinding in Forza, it crashed the game. I, like I would expect most households with the income to buy an Xbox one, have a tablet or smartphone which is so much simpler for most of those tasks. Even with the synchronised apps like machinima,mwhy couldn't they leverage smartglass for those so they can be synchronised but not shrink my screen?
- very limited DVR features. Basically I can play/pause and change live TV channels. Not bad, but I would have much preferred more integrated support for major DVRs. As it stands, I rarely use the guide and just use my normal DVR remote for day to day use because it is the only way to see my recordings etc. HDMI passthrough is useful (in my loves) but the TV integration part with oneguide is half arsed.
- too picky about game names. How many Forzas and assassins creeds have I installed, stupid Xbox. Just the one? Then just let me say the basic name.



PS4 loves:
- fast installs. Super fast. Fantastic part of the machine especially after the shit that was PS3
- background installation of patches.
- simple UI. You know your game is on that line somewhere :)
- vertical separation. I like how the more system features into the top line, apps and games in the middle, and you can drill down into games etc by pushing down. Works well and is neat
- remote control via HDMI. Works well of my TV, but I realise it is patchy on others
- I like how, if you have the PS4 on but switched to a different HDMI inout (eg to watch TV), a quick tap of the PS button will switch inputs back to the PS4
- double tapping the PS button to flip between game/previous app.
- gyro keyboard. Click R3 when the onscreen keyboard is up, and you can use the gyro to point at characters. So much faster than moving the cursor with the dpad.
- share button. I use this a lot for screenshots and I like the immediacy.
- tiny camera. I like using voice to launch games (especially when I haven't played he game for a while so I know it'll be down the list somewhere), and the streaming looks a lot of fun. Also a *lot* smaller than the kinect
- DS4 headphone socket.
- remote play. Fantastic feature.

PS4 hates:
- simple UI. I bet that game is right at the end of this stupid long list.. Really needs folders like TV&Video or something. Anything.



I do think the Xbox OS appears to be more flexible so MS may have more opportunity to iterate it. And I'm really curious about what they do with threshold/windows 9. If they open an App Store on Xbox one that could be a gamechanger for me. I also hope they bring cortana to Xbox one, it could really be the centre of the living room if they can do those two things.

Xbox One's OS feels like a terrible step backwards from the 360. Slow and confusing. I wish they'd just go back to what worked.

In contrast, the PS4 OS is super-fast, especially compared to the PS3. Much less confusing and everything seems to be part of a whole, not a separate app. Even the store loads instantly!

Feels like a lot of people complained about this pre-launch when we heard it was using up memory resources from gaming. Don't do it Sony, free up memory for devs to use, #4theplayers, if people want to twat while they play they can use their iphone!
 
Don't technically own a X1, but I'm using one quite regularly now.

Xbox one :- Cluttered, has a few more settings and features, held down by the fact it is still designed for you have to talk to find what you want. Slower.

PS4:- Even more cluttered, few less settings and features, but lighting fast to get to where you want and while basic, intuitive.

PS4 is slightly ahead here, based on speed. Xbox one isn't far behind, but I have a feeling will feel more bloated ATS the gen progresses.

Still both miles behind 360 in everything but speed.

I play on lots of platforms including, but not limited to Xbone, PS4 and PC and am in no way trying to facilitate anything. I called a couple of posters out for their fanboy agendas for a case of a) "I have only played the PS4 for 20 minutes but I am going to comment on why the Xbone is so much better" and b) a poster that instead of discussing the topic, the OS of these machines, decided they wanted to compare controllers.

I am all about discussing the OS and have made several comments in this thread about the PS4s incomplete feature set and the Xbones over emphasis on non-gaming related OS functions. So drive by posting I am not. Whether it is shit - which most opinions are - is debatable as with anything that appears on this forum. But I am sorry you were annoyed.
 
Feature-Set is superior of course (at least after the DLNA update) but I like the UI itself more on PS4 esspecially for gaming. Just because it's faster (and imo it looks better).

I think someone mentioned earlier that these types of threads should only be greenlit by mods once users console history has been somewhat verified. These bait threads are a flippin' minefield. In fact, it's pretty damn easy to pick out the fibbers from those who are truthful in this thread, but accusing them of being liars without proper facts or evidence should be frowned upon.

Also, for those of you complaining that the Xbox One OS is slow, I think it'd be fun for community members to post some cell phone vids showing either how that's not true or actually true. For me personally, the thing is blazing fast--albeit with Kinect voice commands--so w/o Kinect I wouldn't know.

How did you deduct that he played PS4 for 20 minutes only? Looking at his profile, he at least played Tomb Raider and Infamous, I would say he had more than enough time to get familiar with console and it's OS. I can say you didn't play Xbox One for more than 20 minutes as well.

You just went on and called his post "shit" for his opinion, yet you contributed no value to the thread, other than whine about someone else opinion. That is drive-by shitposting at its pinnacle.
 
Xbones os makes me want to play it less not more. Ps4 boots up faster and plays games faster. It also logs me in faster and offers more horsepower. The os is simple and intuitive. Ps4 wins in my living room. X1 is for exclusives only. Basically a killer instinct and Forza box at the moment.

I'm shocked by the amount of people praising the ps4 OS. I haven't tried the Xbox one yet but it must be better than the absolute disaster the ps4's OS is. I feel this way but still absolutely love my ps4.
 
I hate the Xbox One UI. It's sluggish, it's confusing, Kinect does not work consistently (maybe it works better for some languages, but in french, I have to repeat everything multiple times), ads are invasive and installs take hours.

I do love suspend/resume and redeeming QR codes makes me giggle like a 8 year old.
 
Xbox One OS is prettier, with a wider set of options and functionalities.

But you know what? At the end of the day PS4 does what it needs to be done to play videogames faster, while those videogames usually provide also better IQ, and people like it better.

And it's not just Xbox where Microsoft has gone too far. It is just the same story everywhere. Microsoft screwed it up big time in all their OS fronts in the last years.

Sony, Apple, Google. They all do what people want them to do. Microsoft? They were late to the mobile party so they tried to force the customers to like something they don't, and never will, according to the numbers, in order to try to establish an ecosystem which is really really tough to swallow.

Good luck in the next years microsoft. Win Mobile droped below 3% in market share. Xbox One is being sodomized by PS4. Business sticking with Win 7, or switching to mac, because of the stupìd Win 8 layout. Governments everywhere switching to Linux to brutally cut costs... Tough times ahead.
 
PS4 nails my preference for a UI, simple and lightning fast. Just hope it doesn't slow down with all the new stuff they're eventually going to add.

Huh?

This isn't accurate. Which game installs take hours? If you're talking from Disc, I mean.

If it's downloading updates that is taking time then that's your connection, not the system.

As for the ads? 3 tiles telling you about content available on the system on the home page versus an entire page you can set your pins out on, no ads?

I'm not going to say Xbox One has a better OS than PS4, I don't have a ps4, but I don't think it's fair to say it's burdened with ads and that installs take hours when it's not true.
 
You know whats one thing I never knew about the XBO was that the controllers have their own firmware.
 
Been playing XBO on and off for the past few months. Aside from a few key things, like custom tiles and code scanning, I keep finding myself wishing it was the 360 OS, although not often enough as we generally jump into a game of Madden or UFC (or Titanfall on 2 systems). Snap and Skype is kinda cool, although I prefer video chat on my phone / laptop and they have 2 TVs side by side, so we can watch movies while someone games.

The PS4 OS seems to run a tad bit faster for jumping into games and invites, although it's also not really as intuitive as it could be. Plus, seems like if you're playing a game that is already pushing the system a little (but no major fan) jumping into the OS while in-game pretty often causes my system to turn into a harrier jet. That and if the game is loading / unloading the OS can get laggy.

Yes, I admit I'm exaggerating and I'm sorry. But it still takes consistently between 5 and 15 minutes before I can play a game from a disc the first time, when on PS4 it's never been more than 60 seconds (usually between 30 and 45 seconds).

And tiles telling me about content available is ads, and nothing less. When I see ads on TV, it's not just them politely letting me know that there's a new brand of toothpaste. It's ads. That space could be used for something more useful and it's contributing to the cluttering feeling a lot of people seem to complain about. I don't like that.

The 3 recommendation tiles aren't always ads. Recently for me they've shown a link to the Halo Gamescom tournament finals on Twitch, new features in the recent update, free games with gold etc. And when they are ads its almost always just promoting new releases on the store.

I'm not bothered by a five to fifteen minute install time, given that it is generally a one time thing, I'll admit that the Ryse install felt excessive, hopefully these things are getting and will get better. You can think of the time you save with suspend and resume to balance it out maybe.

I think some people are always going to be upset at ads on their systems but I honestly think they've got it right here, those 3 tiles take up a sixth of one screen, they're separated from the tiles in the main part of the screen and there are no ads on the pins screen.

Personally, I'm OK with seeing what's on sale/is the current games on gold free title but I can get that some would rather not.

I wonder if people would opt out in significant numbers if Microsoft gave the option.

Yes but then again, I don't like that. It's a personal feeling, and I get that some people can be okay with it or even find it useful. But I don't. It's my fucking system, and I want to see my content on it. I'm a big boy, and if I want to see the recent releases, I can go in the store myself, or just read GAF or whatever, I don't know. That's something that makes me prefer the PS4 OS over this one.

(Edit: and I know there's the same kind of stuff in the activity feed on PS4, and I'm not okay with it either. It's just less invasive in my opinion. I still wish it wasn't there though)
 
100%. Just for suspend and reliable video recording I do. Snapping shit actually slowly becomes useful too. Yes, it's a little bit slower than PS4 but it also does way more.
 
The PS4 UI is basic, but at least it's easy to find what you're looking for. It needs an update with folders quick...

The Xbox One UI is a mess if you don't use Kinect. It got better, but damn, sometimes I'm clicking trough lots of menu's in search of the option or function I need. It's way to cluttered, with way to many menu's (some things are behind the Xbox Button, others you have to scroll for trough the grid). I don't use Kinect (I don't like talking to a machine + I hate the thought of a camera on my face all the time, so I unplugged it), and then it's PS4 UI all the way...

Need to download the new system update for Xbox One though. Been ages since I fired up that system

Nope...Console is coming in on a year since launch and still no ability to pause a download on a 2013 device. Almost embarrassing!

Also my list of apps/games is just turning into a giant stream, folders can't come quick enough. It's so disorganised.

Sony imo are doing a terrible job of updating the OS. We've basically had 1 proper update since launch, Xbox has had countless.

and I am in the beta, there have been a ton of improvements and more coming
so yes I made the right choices, I own all 4
but I am very happy with my Xbox One and know I made the correct decision

Because Microsoft had to add features, the PS4 already has since launch.

How can the PS4 OS be more complicated? Everything is under "Settings". Everything you see is in 1 screen.

From left to right: PS Store, Notifications, Friendslist, Trophies, Settings etc etc
 
My biggest problem with the PS4 OS is that 50% of the time I try to get to the store I get a blue screen and nothing is happening. So Just because of that it doesn't feel snappy and lightning fast as others have said. Because of that it doesn't feel as "reliable" as the Xbox OS.
 
Kinect makes the difference to me.
I know a lot of people do not want a kinect but the voice commands are soo handy.
I really do think it was worth the extra price.

Try to start the PS4 in save mode, and rebuild the database.
 
Xbox One absolutely has the better OS, imo. It also just keeps getting better and better each month as well. Microsoft has been on point with adding a ton of features that people have been asking for.

Also, I just love watching tv/playing games with Skype snapped to the side of the screen. Navigating the menus with my voice is also pretty sweet. There's just so much more that you can do with the Xbox One.

I found if you just let it sit that, eventually it comes up.

Exactly, but thats the problem. It should work immediately and always. In the beginning I thought because of the new system etc. but we are almost a year since launch and its still the same.

Sorry but that's not the case. One of the first things they added was the sorting of apps and games etc - something the PS4 still doesn't have. As someone who owns both consoles it's downright fact that Microsoft are doing a better job on the update side of things, I've never understood why people defend Sony's lack of them. It's like they don't want a product they're a fan of to improve. I absolutely love my PS4, but I'll be the first to admit where Sony need a kick up the backside.

Oh come one. But have ads, don't act like the PS4 doesn't have it. Both are implemented in different ways but the point remains the same. For example if I want to use crunchyroll on my PS4 I have to scroll through a dozen of apps (that I don't even have installed) in order to get to the app that I have installed.
