Doctor Who Series 8 |OT| We've fucking time-travelled, yes?

Quick question. I have never seen Doctor Who. Is it a good time to jump in with a new Doctor or am I gonna be lost because I missed all the other seasons?

Watch with the new man, and if you enjoy it, seek out the stuff from 2005 on on Netflix or Amazon Instant video. (That's 7 series each of 13 episodes each 45 minutes and a few specials, so nothing compared to most shows with their 20+ ep series'.). If you enjoy THAT, you can consider going super deep and seeking out some of the highlights from 1963 on.

This is a deep show, with a lot to work with... but the way Doctor Who works, for instance, is there's usually only two or three 'regular' characters. The show goes somewhere new every week, and it's constantly changing. ANYWHERE is a good jumping on point. While different people will argue differently, there is NO BETTER PLACE to jump in than live, as it's broadcast, and with a brand new Doctor. Enjoy this series. Maybe in its entirety, maybe you get a few episodes in. When you're convinced, hop back to 2005 (beware: hasn't aged brilliantly in places) and start to work your way through.

The publicity for this series has officially gone mad.

I work at the building on the very left and some of my colleagues heard about this and went out to get signatures etc. Im not a big Dr Who fan myself so i wasnt bothered but its a pretty cool promotion.

Watched the four leaked episode workprints. With absolutely no spoilers and very much bearing in mind these are unfinished episodes, thought Deep Breath was quite hit-and-miss, nowhere near as good an introductory story for 12 as Eleventh Hour was for 11 and a little to Moffat-y in places, but still fun and with a nice ending.

Ep 2 (not sure which ep titles have been released, so will just refer to numbers from here) was a lot stronger, though maybe not quite living up to the potential of its premise.

Ep 3 was kind of all over the place, with some nice back-and-forth dialogue but another terrible Gatiss ending - and I'm more amenable to his work than most, it seems.

Ep 4 was generally decent but seemed to take a few too many story shortcuts. Oh, and Clara looks cuter than anything in this episode, particularly at the start.

Looking forward to seeing the final versions, obviously finished effects, proper score and completed ADR will only improve each one.

How many seasons will I have to go check out to fully appreciate this show?

I would say Season 1 of the new series (2005). They explain occurrences and older monsters from the old series (1960's -1980's) in the new show well enough for newcomers. I'm a 2005 Doctor Who fan who has only watched a few of the older series episodes, and I think it's a good starting point.

Of course, fully fully appreciating it would mean going back to the beginning. But, to realise a good appreciation for it, the 2005 series is fine.

about 34. or 8. or 3.

Starting with a new Doctor will be fine. There are lots of newish viewers and the continuity is so fluid
broken, ignored
that there will always be a bit of dialogue to explain why things are happening.

Start with Deep Breath.

Seriously, It's this weekend, how many seasons can a person ingest before the intro ep and have any of it stick?

Just jump in now. It's a new Doctor, the beginning of a new series. And it airs tomorrow anyway. No point in binging on tons of past Doctors now when a new one will begin in 24 hours.

Then once this series is finished, head back and revisit S1-7.

This. Deep Breath is a good jumping on point.

The bookies have marked a chick from Game of Thrones as the favourite to replace Jenna. Rose Leslie. Bit silly, but she's actually in a sense a surprisingly deft pick for the bookies to make, since GOT has given her visibility in the US, something the production team would no doubt view as a plus,
but she's no longer in it, so she's available.
Another Scottish redhead, though? Mind you, could see Moffat, of all people, doing it...

I used to say start with Rose, but starting with "The Eleventh Hour" in Series Five probably is the best place now.

Unless they make her have a Scottish accent, she actually has a super posh English accent due to her training. But the way Clara's looking like she might be, how does a new companion challenge the 12th Doctor?

Ah she was in Utopia (never watched Game of Thrones). I'd like a two to three person dynamic again though instead of one companion.

You saw episode 4?! Listen?! How was it?

I'd be pleasantly surprised if this happens.

Episode 4 hasn't leaked, 5 has.

How in the world could Karen have 16/1 odds?

Bluntly, surely a GoT cast member would cost a lot more than say, what they have tended to go for? Apart from Catherine Tate, while companions have done stuff, they weren't really household names*?

*you know in terms of telly, not shit pop and being married to a ginge

GoT cast members, especially non-starring ones, are probably quite affordable.

Heck, tons of GoT people and Who people have crossed over so far. for a while, it was a running joke with my wife and I during our marathon earlier this year/late last year.

At the same time though, how could she cost more than Tate, who was "own TV show with her name in the title" material? Or indeed Piper, because her S1 contract was only for one year, and you can bet after it instantly made her "hottest name on British TV" her rate skyrocketed. Think that money can be found for the right actor.

Speaking of which, having tried my first Big Finish and really liked it-- is there a better way to hear them than buying them outright? A service or something?

It was Prisoner of the Sun, btw, and pretty much everything I like about Who.

Keep an eye on BBC Radio 4 Extra listings, they've broadcast a few of them (indeed, some of the McGann series were funded by the BBC and had their first broadcast on the radio). That said, the SF strand ("The 7th Dimension") has been cut back recently to just being on weekends rather than an hour every day.

Just checked, and they're broadcasting one of the Lucie Miller series from Sunday 31st August at 6pm (repeated at midnight), starting with "Death in Blackpool".

NICE. That's a great place to jump on.

I love this Radio Times poster:

Slightly better than the DeviantArt one :)

I like it, mostly because it implies the new Doctor smokes. (
I know he won't, let me have my fantasy.
)

Edit: Now that some of you are talking about Big Finish: I watched all the tv episodes, but I've only listened to a handful of the Big Finish stuff: the first season of the 8th doctor adventures, the first three stories of the monthly range, the first fourth Doctor story and the 50th anniversary stuff. I'm currently rewatching the classic stuff again (just started The Mind Robber - that first episode is so damn insane and fun), but after that I might make the jump into Big Finish. For the moment I'd like to start on some of the stuff outside of the main ranges, and I'm kind of interested in the Bernice Summerfield range after hearing some good things about it. Can I just jump into that range without having read the novels? Some of the earlier stories seem to be adaptions of the novels, so I suspect the most important developments are covered in the audios, but the overview I'm looking at is a bit confusing.

Just remembered this was tonight! Hype! Probably will have to catch a late night rerun though. Won't be able to watch it live sadly

Good lord. I was about to head to bed but I guess I'll have to put that off. I can't believe I will have seen nearly half the series before the first episode has even aired.
