Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

For what's worth on the subject of 3DS trade-in offers: while Nintendo's account locking is bad, I've found that some Gamestops will allow in-store system transfer after they inspect the old 3DS. Ask the manager. If there's wifi active in the area this makes it easy. You can also use a cell phone tether for a few minutes of wifi.

It's stupid, you shouldn't have to worry about it, but it's possible to get a trade-in done without losing your licenses.
That's pretty nice; I've been wondering how trade ins will work for something like this.

What the freak. Old school SNES colours. NoA had better release this in white.

Also...is it just me or does it look like the white system is completely matte, both outer and inner shell? I can't stand the shiny plastic look.

wow looks cool, want one.

but isnt the hardware is pretty dated now?

Ive only played 3DS in shops a few times, how does the visuals stack up against new phones/ vita these days?

The 3DS loses almost every single time. That said, it's still capable of some decent looking software. Just don't go in expecting Vita quality visuals, though.

I don't get why so many people are salty about this upgrade and it 'fragmenting' the user base. Nintendo has done this with their other handhelds. GB to GBC, GBA to GBA SP, and DS to DSi- all of them vastly improved the original system designs.

The GBA to GBA SP did not fragment the market, but it was a big improvement on the original- rechargeable battery, a backlit screen, and a completely new form factor. If you tried an SP when you just had a normal GBA, going back to that was almost unbearable.

They always do at least one big revision that makes a bunch of changes to the handheld. History repeats itself, why is everybody so surprised?

These are completely different.

GBC was a new hardware line, as was GBA.

The revisions are:

Game Boy - Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance - SP ABS- SP AGS- Micro
DS - DS Lite - DSi - DSi XL

The difference is that, all these machines had the same buttons and played the same games. This is a totally separate situation. Nintendo is making what is supposed to be a new model of the 3DS, but it has more controls on it (ie games that need it) and will have its own set of games exclusive to this revision. This is entirely different from just a visual or form factor refresh.

So apparently the Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS port will only work on the new 3DS because it takes advantage of the faster CPU.
I expect this will be the norm as older 3DS units are phased out.

Just wondering, was there a reason SNES games never went to 3DS VC? Was it a hardware limitation?

Definitely not a hardware limitation, at all. They are probably waiting for this release and will make it seem like added value to the "New" 3DS.

They also announced Turbo Grafx 16 and Genesis games for 3DS VC, neither of which ever happened.

The improved 3D viewing angles, does that apply to both the regular and XL New models? I think I read earlier today that it was XL only but it may have been a misunderstanding, just wanna be sure.

Sorry if this has been asked(thread is huge now!) but why didn't they move the Start and Select buttons to the middle, move the ABXY down to parallel with the D pad, and the have a second analog stick that was the same size as the one on the left?

Surely someone at Nintendo thought about that, right?

Not on par with Vita, but 3D makes visuals better than they would be without it.

It looks nice and I like the upgrades, even if they aren't huge ones but, man, is that the best they could do with the second stick? Why couldn't it be a smaller version of the circle pad or something? The placement seems odd too, needing to reach over the buttons to use it. I guess they don't want you accidentally hitting it but still. Must be limited to camera control only or something. That's disappointing if that's how it is but hopefully they reveal more details soon. I'd love to see that it works well so I can be pleasantly surprised.

I really don't know what to think about this. If this is just a way to get some extra hw sold like with past revisions well yes I can see the point making some money if the margins are allright but if this is some way to postpone the release of next handheld? eeeh. This will mostly sell just to existing customers and hence will not improve the sw sales that much (where the money is made). Why would anyone that didn't buy original 3DS before would buy this when the upgrades are still rather minimal compared to whole new consoles. Well we will see if this is like DSi or ''3.5DS''. DSi never got any exclusive retail titles am I right ?

Seems to be both. The description just says 'new "super-stable 3D" function' as one of the features.

So will retail boxes say only available on the New 3DS or whatever. It seems there could be some confusion.

Xenoblade with a sticker "Only for the New 3DS!"

"But the 2DS was the new 3DS, right?"
"No, sir, this is the New 3DS."
"Oh! You mean the large one? The XL?"
"No, this XL is the New 3DS XL."
"Oh. Well I'll take the old one. It's cheaper!"
"But it doesn't play the New games."
"BUT THIS *IS* A NEW GAME! Why won't a new game play on the system?"
"Again, that's not the New XL system."
"Whatever. I'm taking the old XL and the new game."

Mad respect for retail workers.

Oh I can see it now...

Customer: "I want to get a 3DS"

Me: "Ok. Did you want a used 3DS, a used 3DS XL, a new New 3DS, a new New 3DS XL, a used New 3DS, or a used New 3DS XL?"

Customer: "Uhhh what did you say? Are you trying to confuse me? I want to speak to the manager!"

Me: "I am the manager. You see Nintendo came out with a newer versi...."

Customer: "Well I want corporates number! I won't stand for this!"

Whoever is in charge of naming shit at Nintendo needs to be fired.

GB colour came 9 years after the gameboy. At a time when GB was invredibly obsolete.

Like you said the SP didnt shaft original GBA owners at all

DSi didnt really affect ds owners in the way that the new 3ds is capable of. An extra stick, buttons and horsepower are a whole different ball game to a camera.

Man people must be stupid nowadays if they are going to be oh so confused of games specific to the newer system. People didn't seem to have issue with the GBC or DSi.

With more thought, I am leaning to going back to the smaller sized 3DS with this version. As nice as the XL is, I miss the smaller form factor.

What about this game, New Super Mario Bros. 2, is that for the 2DS or the New 3DS?

"There are two versions, my beloved customer: 3DS and New 3DS. Each one in two sizes."

DSi also had more ram and faster CPU I think.

What I most don't understand about this New 3DS, is why Nintendo would deal with market fragmentation for such minor upgrades. I'd think they would want to make more significant improvements that they could market effectively.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to buy one, but I'm a consumer whore.

Man, imagine Timmy's Christmas when he opens up a brand new New 3DS game that his grandparents bought him, but he's only got a regular 3DS. Imagine the furor when the parents find out they can't return the game b/c they opened it and tried to play it on the wrong system.

Are New 3DS cartridges going to have some sort of different shape so they can't be inserted into an old 3DS?
My guess as to their reasons:

1) New design avoids the patent issues - HUGE REASON

2) Counter piracy - BIG BIG REASON

3) Monster Hunter (make CPP features standard) - BIG REASON

4) Support Amiibo - why not

...

...

...

22) More powerful to support more powerful games thus fragmenting the market

I'm calling this the 3DS XL-eet. As in Elite. I'm not exactly sure how I'll type it tho. XLeet? XLite? We shall see.

That's just what I'll do. Each decides if this really is Elite worthy :)

Wish it had rumble...
