Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

in japan, the 3ds has outsold the gba. with these new models, it may end up outselling the psp (that's a good thing).

the same is only true of the latter in the us. it may end up outselling the psp in america. that's about 17m units, a far far cry from the 30-40m units a standard nintendo handheld has sold for the last two decades.

the 3ds should be their biggest money maker. it makes no sense to let sales sag in the us until some random time in the new year with software no one cares about.

i mean maybe majora's mask 3d is still waiting in the wings and we'll hear about it soon and it'll launch as a new 3ds game. that's about it. i'm scratching my head as to what's left.

Excess of inventory, simple.

So, how much do you guys think this is going to cost?

I've made some calculations, and 16,000 yen is $153. I bet Nintendo will release the regular N3DS in USA for $130, since the prices are usually higher in Japan.

I'm excited! I already have a 3DS, but this is the first time that I want to upgrade. Release it on Christmas, and I'll be there day 0.

Edit: Wait, not this year?! What?! :(

So if anyone have a XL and want's to see how would be the size of the regular n3DS, Ive made these images.

(Screens from miiverse, that why the poor quality :P)

Just open them in the 3DS browser. (I recommend seeing them in the dark and to cover the lower screen with your hands or something else, it can be quite distracting :P)

If someone what to make one, just make a 400x240 image with a black bg and resize the screenshot to 318x191 (to center it, leave 41 pixels at either side). Mind you that because you are resizing and if your source is bad (like Miiverse) it's going to be blurry. Just imagine it sharp :P)

And I'm a little bit more sure I'll be getting the regular. The screen size is not bat at all, but I think 30~40% bigger would been a nice middle ground.
(And to finish all paragraphs equally, :P)
Thanks for the images, the size looks good enough
but now you gave more doubts about which I'll buy :/

Nintendo 3DS may be the first handheld without a Metroid title. Does Nintendo even remember Metroid exists? Something like Other M 2 (gameplay wise) could work wonderfully on 3DS.

I know they could still release a Metroid title even though we're well into the second half of the 3DS's life cycle, but I don't think they will until the next handheld.

Maybe it will exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS/LL.

Exchange rate has signficantly changed in the last few years. There is no way it will be 130. 150 is the best case scenario, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see it at 170 and the XL and 199.

2015 year of Metroid. BELIEVE.

AWES...(2015) SONofA @#&*%$#!

Seriously going to be a bad Xmas for Nintendo in America unless they firesale the old 3ds systems. Faceplate is awesome and should make getting exclusive prints easier, in theory.

I couldn't keep up with the thread, but someone else also thought that this N3DS fits perfectly with the new development paradigm/framework that Iwata told in some interview that could unify the 3DS and WiiU game development?

With the new butons and stick the N3DS is just a portable WiiU controlwise, and with the two screens it has all the WiiU + TV functionality.

I can see some games, if not all, being developed with both systems in mind, using the cross-buy/save already in use with PS3/4-Vita.

The signs were there...

The OG 3DS has been discontinued for some time now - even removed from Nintendo's 3DS advertising and website. For a while now, I speculated that a new model would arrive to replace the OG 3DS.

I also predicted that the new model would have NFC functionality built in, and better Miiverse functionality.

Then, there are the signs that only make sense in retrospect. Nintendo, for no reason at all, added a Xenoblade 3DS streetpass puzzle. We should have thought that was fishy.

I also thought that Nintendo should add faceplates - the perfect way to stop all those gamers waiting until a "lime green Metroid 3DS" is released.

The one thing I didn't predict was the leap in specs / exclusive games.

As for the name. I don't see the problem. It's got NEW in the name. It can't be clearer.

It'll be a metroid prime port. Watch.

I'd be all over that like a kid is to eating peanut butter sandwich, savouring every moment of the game on 3DS. I'd day start a petition to port Skies of Arcadia to the new 3DS XL. Should be no problem now porting it.

For the love of God, do NOT call it NEW 3DS in NA or EU.

Call it Super 3DS or something.

Can this naming argument finally die a fiery death?

It's like people don't remember how much complaining for months there was about possible confusion over the 3DS name not being different enough from the DS. Then once the 3DS started selling well, NO ONE has brought it up again.

The Wii U sells poorly and people won't shut up about the name as if that is the only problem the system has and now we already have complaining about possible confusion for a system that has "New" in the title as if people won't understand what the word "new" means.

I'm gonna call it the Xenoblade 3DS

nice tag btw :P

And guess what, I got vindicated because turns out there WAS a Direct today!

*puts shades on*

Parents and the media still confuses the Wii and Wii U to this day. It's a real problem.

The problam it's not that. It's things like:

"A new 3DS game". It's ambiguous, does't it me a new 3Ds game or a game for the New 3DS? You'd need something like "The new New 3DS game, Xenoblade..." which IMO, sounds strange as hell.

It works in Japanese, but it's bad in English.

Don't worry, we at Nintendo got something just for you.

Ah, yes, here it is! *blows off dust*

I just think it's a stupid name. And yeah, the whole "New 3DS game" vs "new 3DS game" confusion. I have already run into that problem like three times today.

Don't tease me like that. Retro's new game could feasibly be out next year though.

Double sales from what?

double current monthly sales this holiday season with current OG hardware price drops.

would not mind a metroid or calling this iteration super 3ds in NA.

A problem. Not THE problem.

People confusing not liking a name with how important that name is or isn't to the success of hardware. I'd say it's a much smaller a problem than people make it out to be judging by how many silly and confusingly named pieces of hardware are out on the market and are successful.

Just off the top of my head:
Roku, iPads not being officially numbered, iPad Air, Kindle Fire HD compared to a Kindle Fire, etc.

If people care at all about the product (which comes down to marketing and features/apps more than a name), they will buy it or at least look into it more. It's the most superficial reason for someone to buy or not to buy something and is therefore more inconsequential than the emotionally charged reactions of gamers will have you believe.

Look at Super Famicom button layout on the white model. Look at the white/gray blending. It looks like a portable Dreamcast.

Man, the next batch of Sega 3D Classics better be DC games. They could even integrate some of the VMU stuff on to the second screen! Imagine Skies, Sonic, Jet Set Radio, Chu Chu Rocket, etc in 3D with VMU stuff on the second screen. Put those up on the eShop for $20 an I'm down!

But it's still a problem. So fix the problem by naming it something that won't cause a problem. Like Super 3DS. It gets the point across. It's a Super 3DS. It's a better 3DS.

"New" gets the point across as well. When you say "New" your expecting somethings been upgraded, your expecting something better. Even fast food does it when they're changing things up. Domino's added garlic butter to their pizza crusts and advertised "Try our NEW Pizza" Its still Pizza, it has all the same things as the old pizza, they just added something "new"

So much for people saying I was dumb because I thought they would release a model with a built in second stick.

I guess the lesson is to not buy Nintendo hardware at launch. This one has a better CPU, face plate and a second stick.

"The new iPad" is and was an incredibly stupid name.

No it wasn't because there was never an iPad ever actually called that.

Marketed that way? Perhaps, but it wasn't the actual product's name. It's like saying the Wii's successor is called Super Wii because of early Wii U ads in Japan.

if this is the case, release the new models and simultaneously slash the prices of the old ones to clear stock. they would move through the holidays.

That would result in impairment charges though - Nintendo would not gain anything from that.

Both very good points, also 2DS needs to be a permanent $99. It gets discounted enough anyway.

From what the manager of my local Gamestop told me, the 2DS has been discontinued? It was marked down to new $99, and now their system is saying it's not going to be restocked or ordered anymore from the manufacturer
