Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Looks completely . . . boring. I get that it's a mini upgrade, but it's just not something that would make me want to upgrade.

I don't really see what they're going to accomplish with this personally. I own a 3DS and Vita but am not a big handheld gamer so maybe it doesn't matter what I think, but I don't see this doing much of anything really.

For me it just makes me want to sell my current 3DS XL, and maybe buy one of these new ones to replace it sometime down the road.

If this stunt works just like how the DSi did, they're going to accomplish a lot.

I just noticed they upped the screen size for default sized New 3DS over from OG 3DS.

Bottom screen went from 3.02 inches diagonally to 3.33. Top screen went from 3.53 to 3.88 inches. Your move, Samsung.

Thankfully, this does not mark a substantial decrease in pixel density like the XL.

Anyone know what the jump from DS to DSi was? if it ends up being the same percentage, I'm gonna smile.

Basically, like the DSi and DSi XL were, this is now the best model 3ds and the most fully realized execution of what the 3ds is about. How I wish these models would be the ones Nintendo released at the start of this gen.

This really was such a megaton and the coolest thing was to see Iwata hosting a Nintendo Direct again <3. Glad to see he is back on track at work, hope that also means we would see new Iwata Asks as well!

Even if it's not going to be released on the west until next year, I'm so looking forward to get the New 3DS just for the custom plates, they look awesome. I already have a XL but I don't mind going back to that smaller screen.

I love that the buttons have the same colouring as the Super Famicom/PAL SNES

if it has the same effect on the 3ds's userbase the dsi did on the original ds, then it would move about 14m units on its own, over time. it gets the system to 20m, maybe 21m in japan. 62m seems about right for the 3ds including everything over time.

My friend and I were talking. Anyone getting an iPhone 5 vibe with the bottoms/tops of the unit above/below the faceplates?

Gotta love it!

Region locked is still so draconian...

No Mac support for data transfer isn't ideal either.

No way am I buying a PAL version again. I'm going with an NTSC and all digital. Works out cheaper than the AU priced eshop. Go figure.

I don't understand the strategy. Is this enough for current owners to upgrade en masse?

It also has the benefit of giving new owners a better piece of hardware at essentially the same cost. Not everyone is upgrading. I imagine it'll take a lot more than Xenoblade for people to upgrade en masse though. I'll be doing it cause it'll be cheap after selling the XL and I'm a sucker for the newest everything. He'll I'm even going to buy a Moto 360 in a week haha.

i'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but has it been confirmed that the 3DS can multitask? like play music while playing games?

I think that should be enough of a bump until the real 3DS successor gets released. Obviously nowhere near the range of the DS. I wonder how many units the GBC by itself shipped during its lifetime?

Not to my knowledge, not on the site, and not on the Direct. If I were you, I'd assume no for now. Truthfully, I don't see this likely at all.

It's a nub, worse than the psp's nub, this is a nipple like nub. Its a shoehorned solution to a problem that should have been obvious to Nintendo at the earliest stages of planning the OG 3ds.
The PSP nub was, like the circle-pad, a slider. This doesn't look like it slides at all, but actually tilts, wether it be a like a micro-sized analog stick of Thinkpad trackpoint pointing stick is to be determined, but it seems to tilt.

I don't see how one could call this anything like the PSP slider nub.

That "second stick" looks really awkward.

I'm not quite sure if they moved the face buttons down, but just imagining it on my 3ds XL, my thumb keeps hitting the top border separator. Another thing is the top ZL/ZR feels kinda like an odd placement since you can mistakenly hit the L/R buttons.

I'm really glad I never upgraded from my OG 3DS to an XL. But now I'll have the rest of the year to ponder whether I would get the New 3DS with custom faceplates or the one with the larger screens. Damn you Nintendo.

If you like customization and sharper pixel densities, save your money and go with the superior (IMO) non-XL variant.

Did they improve the screen resolution?
As others have said, no, BUT if you are like me and plan to upgrade from an 'old' 3DS XL to a 'new' 3DS (non XL) then you will get higher density than the original 3DS XL yet still a bigger screen than the first 3DS, though it'll be smaller than the XL which is what I want, because I feel it is slightly too big for the pixel density.

I'm really happy with this compromise.

weird how they shifted the start and select buttons.. should have kept it at the same place so the c stick can be bigger

I do hope the pixel density has been improved... can't get back to the 3DSXL after gaming on my Vita

roughly 50m units as well. the gbc was also backed by pokemon, which was taking off worldwide at that point.

there were over 64m (but less than 65m) game boy/gbc units sold from the end of the 3rd quarter of the fiscal year 1998 until its discontinuation in 2006 (although nintendo apparently accepted unsold stock from regions outside north america and japan until 2010).

Not sure if I'll buy into this.

Only way I can justify buying a new 3DS is if there is an exclusive for it that I must have and if they start releasing limited editions for it.

Yup, I noticed and loved it. This version has apple written all over it, especially considering they named it "new" just like the new IPad.

Normally I'd always go for the biggest screen possible but the availability of a white color, the amazing Super Famicom colored ABXY buttons, and the faceplates of the regular New3DS make it far and away the best choice for me.

I have a bad feeling I'm gonna go faceplate crazy, lol. I'll finally have my orange 3DS :D

Seems weird, like a stop-gap until they can make their true successor portable system affordable enough to release (which is supposed to share Wii U style archetecture?). If they can make the New 3DS competent enough to run the same SNES/GBA (and NES) VC games the U does and unify the account system, then I might bite for an upgrade.

2 LEs have benn announced for the XL variant, but the great thing about the regular New Nintendo 3DS is the whole faceplate thing.
how in the fuck do they down-res in a refresh? fail
1: This is a successor, not a refresh.
2: Pixel density also went down from DS to DSi.

Hey there, new to this thread. So, has Nintendo said yet if these monsters are still going to be backwards compatible with DS games or not? Because Nintendo removing BC from later revisions like the DSi and the Wii Family Edition seems to be kind of a thing.

Missed that in the OP, not really digging either of them though.

I wonder if Nintendo would come out with another Zelda themed 3DS

Majora's Mask Remake plz

So just what are the advantages of going New XL over New 3DS if you don't care a out the screen size difference?

The old XL was nice in several ways compared to the original IMO. I'm finding it harder to be compelled by the XL this time.

Non-XL seems to be a much clearer choice this round.

It seems to work with every DS game that does not require slot 2, and every DSi and 3DS and New 3DS game of your region.

Nothing other than maybe exclusive limited editions.

I like things bigger and the XL never bothered me with its resolution., so I'll probably get a New XL.
