Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Anybody have guesses why this is a Japan only release now?

I'm guessing for west Nintendo will also bring "New 2DS", and that can delay the release. Plus, maybe they have games in development exclusive for new 3DS for west, like FPS games. Return of Call of Duty for Nintendo handhelds, anyone?

I can't see them doing that.

I'm pretty sure it's the logistics of making and shipping 2 models to 3 territories. Japan is prioritized due to a better premium market and because they have more to lose there. The US got the 2DS exclusive because they see growth in the lower end market there.

I want a solid deep green not lime green faceplate. Like my avatar green (green ranger). The Luigi one comes close but it has Luigi on it lol.

Isn't Luigi as popular as ever due to Mario Kart 8 (Luigi's death stare?). I think he finally became "cool" :D

I hope that white model with the SNES buttons comes to North America. I used to have that one when I lived in the Middle East, the purple version sux.

I don't mind as much if there is a data transfer method, but OP only mentions for backups. Muh media...

But you can transfer data without opening the backplate. Might be windows 7 and 8 only and not individual files though.

Ooops, I actually forgot to update that part. You can transfer files to a PC via wireless, but only multimedia files (pics, songs, etc...).

Anybody have guesses why this is a Japan only release now?

I got a couple of 'em:

1) they're releasing two new models at once, during the holiday season, and with big releases like Smash and MH. They may not be able to producer enough to release it during uch a busy period in more than 1 territory.
2) EU/NA got the 2DS just last year, that'd be overkill to release a 2nd revision so soon.
3) sales are still goog enough in EU/NA for Nintendo, and there's Smash/Pokémon for the holidays, so I'm sure sales will be good. This New 3DS comes out in Japan after sales have dropped by ~50% compared to last year. The timing was just right. It may not be for EU/NA, which is why a (early?) 2015 release probably makes more sense.

Do we have an image comparing the screen sizes of the New models and the old ones?

Pretty sure the XL screens are identical. N3DS is slightly bigger. An actual pic would indeed be nice.

3.5'' 3.0'' for the OG 3DS, and 3.88" (dunno about the bottom screen) for the New 3DS.

To XL, or not to XL, that is the question.

I went from the 3DS OG to 3DS XL back to the 3DS OG and back to the 3DS XL.

I think I'll end up with the smaller one, assuming the white colour comes to North America. There's trade offs with both models, but we'll see how the New 3DS models will be.

I might have to trade up from my OG 3DS when these drop, but I've got the Zelda edition :(

But Portable Xenoblade + second analog stick + 3D that doesn't suck is VERY tempting.

I changed my mind and I'll likely be getting the Black New 3DS with a 32G MicroSD card.

Q: Can it play all Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games?

A: As far as Nintendo DS/DSi software goes, it won’t be able to play game cartridges that require a specific connection to the cartridge slots, such as the ones that required the GBA cartridge slot on the DS Lite and DS.

This wording confuses me, can I play my physical DS games or not?

Ugh. I know what you mean, it seems such a shame to go smaller again. But a couple of those covers are sooooo good.

Guys, do you really think Nintendo is gonna miss out selling those covers to the huge New 3DS XL audience in the future? I'm expeting the New XL to sell better than the New 3DS.

I think they just want to give more spotlight to the New 3DS in the beginning, since this is a completely new design that hasn't been introduced yet.

I think it basically says: Anything that doesn't require extra connections aside from shoving the DS card into the system.
Think Guitar Hero peripheral.

imagine you're sitting on the subway and you have the small one. you look across the aisle and some dude is playing the big one.

how would you feel?

The same i'd feel if i had the large one, and he had the small one.

You can play DS games on the New 3DS' however just like every other iteration of the 3DS and the DSi/DSi XL you can't play DS games that require the GBA slot. The DS Lite was the last system to have a GBA slot. Just means you can't play games like the one below.

Yes, except for games like Guitar Hero which required the Guitar Grip.

Ah OK, thank you all much appreciated.

It's normal for someone with absolutely zero interest in a 3DS to want to buy the fuck out of one these purely for the faceplates and coloured buttons, right?

I think it's pretty normal.

Initial impressions:
Finally a second analog
Would be perfect to launch with MH4 in NA next year.
Probably means Nintendo wants a couple more years out of 3ds before launching the true successor., or maybe they just wanted mh5 and didnt care if they had to launch a major revision to get it (and keep it away from Vita, the perfect mh machine)

how would he feel?

At this point, I'm not sure whether to go for the new 3DS XL, now that the battery life and screen size of regular 3DS increased by a decent amount.

Really tough decision for me right now.

Are there any games that drop frames on the 3DS?
Cause i'm wondering if the small upgrade is going to work retroactively.

Nintendo confirmed it won't be the case, though I'm not sure if they were just talking about the 2nd stick and extra buttons or the extra power too. my guess is: each game would need to be updated to make use of all the extra stuff. Not sure many developers will bother, though.
