So what exactly is Destiny?

I tried the PS3 beta when it was up.

and all I got from it is that there is a Hub world and you pick your missions from there.
Go from point A to point B and clear the enemies. I did like three missions like that in a row.

Is there much more to it than that? I thought it was open world ala Borderlands but it doesn't look like to be so. Or maybe I wasn't playing it right.

Seems like I am missing something since this is the first time in a while I'm not hyped for a game of this caliber and the Beta withdrawal threads have an insane amount of posts.

I didn't really 'get' it either. Beta bored me to tears, but I suspect that I too may have been doing something wrong. Or perhaps it's just one of those games you can't play alone.

I think the Alpha and Beta gave a decent impression of what the game will be like.
It's a shooter with some really nice presentation and social features.

If you don't like the core shooter gameplay it probably isn't for you.

You can play it solo. There's nothing stopping you from playing the game solo.

It technically is. You can ignore the objective markers and explore the rest of the world if you want while within a story mission. There isn't much of a point because you eventually unlock an explore mode after 2 or 3 story missions anyways.

Its not that special tbh, but i need something to play on the next gen.
Unless the game really gets more fun later on the venus footage looked interesting.

Imagine if you put a Shooter, an RPG, an MMO, some space cowboys, firefly and some Social facebook stuff.

Put them all into a blender and mix them up with ice and a good presentation, and yeah, that's Destiny.

It's a lot of things. But it's primarily a large-scope FPS by Bungie. It takes place in our solar system, and the story will take us across multiple planets. It emphasizes playing with strangers and friends, which is why there will always be real people playing in the world you are in. Take on story missions, big Strike missions and Raids with friends or strangers and have a great time together. Each planet will also have an explore mode where you (and others) can just walk around these open sandboxes finding items and taking on side missions at your own pace, if that's your thing (like it is with me). It's also a competitive multiplayer game.

It's shooter with CoD mechanics and lots of loot grinding, with RPG type leveling, set in a Mass Effect style SciFi universe with a persistent online world. And it is meant to be played with others, although there are single player type modes.

Hate to nit pick but you don't pick your missions from the Tower, you do that from orbit in your spaceship.

There are defense missions where you guard things from waves of enemies, there is some exploring off the beaten path to find loot chests and new areas, there is PVP. I havn't seen any puzzle solving in the beta but its said to exist in the game in raids at least. I can't think of many action oriented shooters that do much more than send you here to kill the enemies and then go there to kill more enemies. From the videos it even looks like there is some platforming... to me it seems like more than just your average shooter but eh, to each his own.

A science fantasy, narrative driven, coop capable, First person shooter with light RPG elements and PVP arena multiplayer.

That's my best shot at explaining it. Can't wait.
