So what exactly is Destiny?

I tried the PS3 beta when it was up.

and all I got from it is that there is a Hub world and you pick your missions from there.
Go from point A to point B and clear the enemies. I did like three missions like that in a row.

Is there much more to it than that? I thought it was open world ala Borderlands but it doesn't look like to be so. Or maybe I wasn't playing it right.

Seems like I am missing something since this is the first time in a while I'm not hyped for a game of this caliber and the Beta withdrawal threads have an insane amount of posts.

I am worried about it as well.It feels like they threw out all the clever AI, encounter design, vechicles, and weaponry that made Halo so replayable in exchange for..?

Guns that have stats?

A hub world?

I don't really know, because the game felt lacking and missing something. I don't think i'll enjoy hunting "mobs" over and over in the same areas.

I feel like a lot of people are going to finish it in 6-8 hours and get bored and sell it.

I don't like how people are giving Destiny extra negative attention just because it seems to be wildly popular. Seems like they expect it to reinvent gaming as we know it or something.

Well as the followup to Halo, expectations are high.

Having numbers jump out of the guys and dropping the story entirely isn't exactly cutting it.

In my experience, it's a watered down MMOFPS. It isn't quite MMO because of its small-scope and short list of features, but it does have a shared online world where you play with friends and randoms via lobbies.

It's FPS Diablo.

I don't think this is really that accurate. In Destiny all the loot you get is predefined, not random stats. I had like 3 of the exact shotgun. I would assume its to better balance PvP so it kinda makes sense, but it is slightly disappointing.

Can you imagine if they had the balls to charge a monthly fee for this game?

I guess with DLC it will almost be a monthly fee in order to continue playing once you exhaust the content on disc in a month or so.

  1. Bungie was like "I want to make another shooter that's not Halo but a little more expansive, let's get to the drawing board!" This was around ODST.
  2. Activision was like "Bungie, I like you, I have money, let me help you help yourself since Microsoft is out the picture."
  3. Then Bungie was like "fuck it, yolo, we like money and fame", so more concepts and broader ideas came into play.
  4. Bungie sees Borderlands
    tumblr_mar3m7UOkO1qg4c28.gif

  5. Bungie likes the mechanics that make open world shooters, customization, variety of weapons, cool environments, and personalization. Things they all experimented with in Halo ODST and Reach.
  6. Boom, Destiny is revealed. And it's fucking awesome and it works (for now...).
  7. Bungie toots it own horn quite a lot now. That's Destiny up until now.

Well, taking in consideration the beta and Alpha that I played, I need to say that I'm not so impressed too. I mean, the game looks great, but I don't saw nothing so revolutionary.
I thought that would be a real open world, but in fact, it's only a large level with some missions that you can stay doing. After a time playing I was really tired of so many repetitions, random enemies.
I hope that the final build have more content and variety, and not only repetition of what we saw at the beta and alpha, only with another skin.

This is my biggest fear.

They either are being secretive about a huge amount of awesome shit that they want people to be surprised by

or the game is basically the content from the beta repeated on several other planets with some new bosses and they don't want that fact getting out before release.

is the narrative an important element of the game or is it more of an afterthought?

if story is important, i hope it isn't told through terminals or audio logs or some other dumb shit like that.

Judging from the beta, they don't seem to have put much effort into it.

I don't understand how a developer can go to great lengths to develop a world with a distinct indentity and a lot of lore to fill it with, and then just not bother with an actual plot. We seen Titanfall do this too, but that was always just a MP only FPS at least.

That's not what's going on. The negativity comes from a lot of people finding Destiny underwhelming given Bungie's promises and pedigree.

Halo CE singlehandedly turned me on to the FPS genre. I was a huge Bungie fan. Unfortunately, they seemed to lose their magic touch with Reach. Maybe the issue was the influx of new employees combined with the departures of some key Bungie vets. Whatever the reason, Destiny seems to lack the same special something that Reach did, but it's worse because Destiny isn't part of a familiar universe that I enjoy. I look at Destiny and I feel the same way I did about the dime-a-dozen generic shooters from last gen: weary. It's a real shame Bungie is committed to the Destiny franchise for, what is it, the next decade? Sad to see.

Despite their rough start with Halo 4, I'm much more interested in 343 Industries' future projects.

It's an online co-op shooter with heavy RPG elements. People seem to get confused when hype misses them, the game isn't trying to hide its qualities, it is what it is, though there are more modes and free-roam. Try with friends if you ever get a chance.

What is Destiny?

Destiny is ACTION.

SCI-FI.

COMEDY!

MARTIAL ARTS.

Destiny is STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN.

TOTALLY UNEXPECTED, NOT KID'S STUFF.

It's a FPS with RPG elements and terrible PvP.
LOL, this is exactly what I was gonna say too.

Destiny is Phantasy Star Online with Halo shooting and art design. Headnumbers are where the similarities to borderlands begin and end.
Not really. With the inclusion of forced iron sights (sigh) and accuracy penalties when airborne (facepalm) the shooting feels very different from Halo.

my friends labeled it "the poor mans Borderlands"...essentially because you will find maybe 3 or 4 chests within an hour of playing. So...Borderlands, with less loot.

As someone who doesn't know a lot about it, how much gun variance is there?

As in, is it even borderlands level of gun variance or less? Is it just like 5 gun types that get higher stats as you go through the game?

Also, is there anything beyond the guns in terms of RPG stuff? Is there leveling? Skills? Armor? Abilities?

I dunno why this game is such a mystery for some. There was an alpha and beta, and plenty of previews. Go hard or go home.

Maybe because they sold it as something much more than it's turning out to be. So people get a bit confused. "Wait, this is it?" They hyped it up to be this amazing, revolutionary thing that would change the FPS genre forever. And it's really not that special.

It's Borderlands made by the developers of Halo.

It's basically this. You either like it or you don't. Don't try "understanding" it.

Oh and this too.

That sounds kind of silly, to be honest. Publisher tout nearly every prominent game as THE NEXT BIG THING IN [GENRE]. You'd have to be really credulous to actually believe it.

The fact of the matter is that Destiny's been at two E3s and received a massive public Alpha and Beta. People acting like they have no idea what kind of game it is... That's just bizarre.

Ok...

Not only that, but all of that PR fluff didn't even matter. The game had practically muted hype until the Alpha hit. It's done far better for itself once it was playable, not through its PR campaign.

Almost all publishers tout their prominent games AS THE NEXT BIG THING.

How is it Bungie's fault that it's not what you expected it to be? It's a solid Bungie shooter and that's good enough for me.

Not every game needs to be innovative.

Hell, nobody gave a shit about Destiny till the Alpha came out.

Well, plenty of people were at least aware of it and maybe a little excited due to the Bungie pedigree and reveal at the way it got top billing at various events, but yeah, I didn't really get a sense of "That looks fun and I really want to play it." until more folks got hands-on time with it. The alpha spoke for itself in terms of actually getting people interested in the game.

I think its more of a feeling of "that's it?" Than anything.
The beta is just a small taste of what we see in the game.

We didn't even try the endgame yet, nor the other subclasses that unlocks on level 15 or the other weapon ans gear tiers (Rare, Legendary, Exotic).

Anyone who expected more than what the beta offered set himself up to disappointment.

Its Borderlands without the cool RPG aspects (fully fleshed skill system for starters) and open world, with standard PvP multiplayer, and a really, really crappy hub area with extremely limited NPC interactions.

Wait, why have I preordered the Digital CE again?

:x
