What exactly is the state of Xbox Series now & going forward?

If call of duty can't grow your subscription service then nothing can. Gamepass is a failure on both the PC front and console front and they need to shut it tf down before it does even more damage to the brand. They had dreams of reaching 100 million subscribers with gamepass and they can't even reach 40 million.

If Xbox is dead, as you say then why do they need to shut down gamepass to avoid doing more damage to the brand? What does it matter to you at this point, if it's dead? Let the people enjoy their gamepass.

Now that Microsoft Gaming is finding success after going third party anyone with half a brain will tell you what the answer is…

There is still Xbox hardware coming and its going to be even more varied than this current generation

Im assuming, from all the rumours…

- Windows based compact gaming PC
- Windows based desktop gaming PC
- Windows based gaming handheld

…will be the 3 variants. As they’re PC based it’s a much lower risk to Microsoft. Their competitors will be Asus and Lenovo, not Sony and Nintendo.

We will be finding out more very soon imo

The celebrations of the death of Xbox hardware have to be put on hold for one more generation (again)

Console generations last a lot longer nowadays and even in the 12th year we are still getting games for PS4/Xbox One which means Xbox Series should still be getting games in 2032. So what's Microsoft plans for the hardware? They barely responded to PlayStation Holiday discounts so if there is a real PlayStation 5 price drop coming soon will they react or just let Xbox Series sales continue to fade ? Will they even boost production for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI?
Well, they have just started to release games....decent games too. May which are XSX exclusive for a while...and then will go to PS5 later. So, there will be a bump in people buying and Xbox so they can play Avowed, South of Midnight and others well before they go anywhere else. Plus these games (and others like Expedition 33 and Doom) will immediately go to Gamepass.

So, I think may will buy an Xbox, even if they own a PS5....unless they don't mind waiting 6+ months to play a bunch of new games......or pay $70 for these new games like Doom, rather than just pay for Gamepass instead.

Sony fanboys will keep hollering 'It's Over!' and other nonsense, but they will also likely have a new console release next fall....so it's NOT over. Quit being children.

My next console purchase will probably be a PC that will play most exclusives. A friend of mine has a One X still and streams Series games through Game Pass Ultimate. That may also be a great way to go if the console prices get too expensive for me.

You sound like a child while telling others quit being children . There has not been a bump in people buying Xbox Series & even if they wanted to Microsoft hasn't been producing enough for a sales bump .

More games, more consoles, more game pass. Enjoy. I know I am.

The xbox series s is for kids who parents just buy whatever because its cheap and people who have very little money and have no clue about the gaming industry. The series x is for people who still have cable tv. Old fossils who dont read the room of reality. I dont see anyone who likes to stay ahead in things buying an xbox series.

I feel ms will make some throw away legacy type consoles just because they are rich. Basically Consoles for cable tv users, zune lovers, and people who would switch from twitch or youtube to mixer. People who dont think ahead. People who buy that generic smartphone instead of the superior samsung or apple devices.

The smart thing to do right now is to sell all that xbox stuff and get a pc,ps5, and switch 2. Rip the bandaid.

It plays all MS first party games and almost all third party games. It also is the only console with Gamepass. If you don’t give a shit about Sony exclusives and don’t want to deal with PC gaming and it’s issues, there’s still a market for this.

The state of Xbox is a long agony that can only be sustained with MS's money. They will release more hardware while they make their total transition to third party, but their destiny will not change.

They said loud and clear that they have new hardware, I'm not sure if it will be mass produced though
They say a lot of things. Jez Corden has a story of a surface laptop model that was in the warehouse ready to be shipped and then canceled at the last minute. Someone managed to bribe a worker and get one.

The Series consoles are not only in free fall but also accelerating. At this rate, the console will be discontinued.

I think the idea of releasing a new console in 2026 or 2027 is going to break something. A generation should take longer because games are taking longer to make; you can't have a generation where there is going to be just ONE true "next-gen'" game, and you can't treat consoles as GPUs/CPUs releases either.

That's not what the console economy is about.

I think Xbox, overall, and PlayStation, to some extent, will face some kind of crash if they push hardware for hardware's sake.

Xbox consoles sales have collapsed and it is accelerating. There is no turning that around, which is why I assume we'll see new hardware sooner rather than later. Microsoft deprioritized Xbox in their marketing, focusing mostly on services and playing their games on any device.

Phil said the future of their business is innovative services, so that will be their main marketing focus whenever they announce it.

The next batch of hardware will help them hold on to their remaining console Game Pass subscribers, but beyond that, they're on borrowed time.

They're honestly something that we haven't seen in the industry before, which is a third party / first party hybrid developer that prioritizes getting consumers to play their games on their platforms by incentivizing them with their subscription service, while making their content available to purchase on other platforms.

I think Xbox has a new plan everyday. No clear direction and more reactive more than anything.
Instead of just going third party they will just continue to milk what they have until the very end. Including potentially suckering people into another console.

The state is the following:
  1. I just bought the 2TB expansion card
  2. When there's going to be a Xbox Series X Pro I will buy it
  3. When there's going to be a Xbox Elite Series 3 controller I will buy it
  4. When there's going to be a next gen Xbox I will buy it
  5. By now I can play pretty much any game there is on the platform except for core Sony games
  6. When I'm invited to the Xbox FanFest this year, I will attend it
Seriously, I wonder who's paying you for all this Xbox bashing which is leading nowhere, 'cuz, you know, I can't hear you.

There's nothing good or unique about XBOX now so that's why it's by far the weakest of the gaming platform. Back in the PS2 days, they had amazing exclusives like Halo 1 and Halo 2. Nowadays even back a few years ago with Halo Infinite, it still didn't bring back their prime glory as one the Halo series isn't that interesting anymore and two Halo Infinite wasn't even exclusive since it was a day 1 PC game also.

Any XBOX game seems to also be on PC day 1 unlike exclusive Nintendo games or timed exclusive PS games.

Yeah whatever the next step is, it's probably gonna be a little weird. I still think they are going to go for the high end whales with a console that is by far the most powerful and expensive and then let Sony and Nintendo provide the main userbase for their games.

OnQ seems to be asking specifically about the fate of the Series consoles. As far as that goes, MS is dialing back their investment, but I expect that they will still continue to support the Series X consoles through most of "next gen." That's because a lot of their install base (I expect) will stick with Series X rather than bother to upgrade next gen - unless the rumored handheld and hybrid options have some strong selling point I am not aware of.

Pretty much. This seems like a pointless thread to me when we are reminded of Xbox's status every month with Circana's US updates.

We was just getting articles about the bright 2025 for Xbox a few months ago but I'm beating a dead horse asking about Xbox Series? The biggest game of the generation is still coming & they have just as much of a chance to benefit from it as PlayStation does .

But we get the glimmer of hope in HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 post that new hardware is being worked on.
Something not AMD?

Yeah, he's been saying that for a while and it makes sense. Microsoft cannot keep trying the same thing and expect different results. I'm intrigued to see what they come up with.

Bright 2025 for Xbox publishing, you mean. Xbox Series consoles? Black Ops 6 didn't make much difference so I don't know what else to tell you. It's a dead horse.

But we have had a few Call of Duty games released already this generation & fans who are still on Xbox One didn't have to upgrade to play the last Call of Duty.

GTAVI will be another shift to current Gen, it wouldn't make sense to sit around & do nothing to move in position to sell your console with the release of GTAVI .

What more damage can be done?

Today lots of people use the Xbox app on PC for one thing. Gamepass. Take away Gamepass and why would anyone ever even start the app? Who in their right mind would buy games there instead of Steam?

I play Avowed right now through Gamepass. And I enjoy it a ton, positive surprise for things many here has talked about in the OT.
But without Gamepass it would just be another unplayed game, the OT would have like 50 posts instead of 2k.

I think it'll be status quo. I'm sure less xbox will get manufactured due to less demand. I don't see them completely abandoning it any time soon even after next box gets released. Especially with Xbox anywhere the series consoles will prob be able the handle the cloud streaming app for a very long time even if they can't play things natively.

If they go basically PC with an Xbox UI then yea I see them continuing hardware for a long time.

They will probably end up selling 36-38 million Series console units all said and done.

Disappointing, yes, but still enough for them to continue support with 3rd party games and Gamepass for many years to come.

Anecdotally, I’m a happy Series X owner who likes Gamepass and just tries to ignore all of the “Xbox is dead” chatter.

I'd also argue that xbox lost a majority of the diehard fanbase to playstation and nintendo in their pivot to third party because alot of the console warriors or platform loyalists feel betrayed by the switch meaning they've lost a chunk of that audience as well.
I’m one of them! Hell, I pre ordered an Xbox One OVER a PS4! I didn’t want to believe all the crap surrounding Xbox. How could they fuck up a console after the 360…? Impossible!!! Well fuck me, they did. Badly! I was an Xbox die hard. Don’t get me wrong, I own all the consoles when they’re out but I tend to favour 1 in particular. And for some reason Xbox, from the original, was my console of choice. That ended about a year into the Xbone’s life cycle. I tried jumping back on with the One X, but it was too late. Where the fuck were the games? Stop trying to get me to rent these god damned games! I want to OWN AND BUY new, good quality 1st party games!

I even purchased the series X, again giving them 1 more shot. But the constant gamepass ads were infuriating. I don’t want to rent games, assholes, so stop trying to shove it up my asshole!

I was around when Nintendo and Sega had their amazing rivalry. It was awesome. I was a Nintendo man but had good friends that were sera and loved what they were doing (I eventually jumped on board for the Dreamcast which was a phenomenal console and is the main reason I went Xbox, being it was like a Dreamcast 2.0). Xbox had something great going with the 360. Great 1st party. Awesome paid exclusives. It remains to this day my favourite console of all time- to me it was the peak of gaming and really signified the end of quality gaming in my eyes.

Their pivot towards renting is awful. They’ve gone 3rd party cause they have had poor leadership making awful decisions at every turn possible. It was great while it lasted, but the Series X will be my last Xbox console. Fuck Phil and fuck gamepass. You ruined Xbox.
