So what exactly is Destiny?

It's Borderlands made by the developers of Halo.

Borderlands the drop rate is better for weapons, but 80% of the weapons are crap

Couple in the fact that the "dupe & share" community ruins it to the point that everyone has the best shields and weapon or stats are hacked and everyone is in God mode, nah it will be nothing like that.

I hate the Borderlands comparison, when that game borrows heavily from say.... Diablo

All the two have in common is guns/fps

A loot based FPS that doubles up as a straight up halo shooter in pvp (with more loot). I don't believe it can be described as an MMO, if only because your interaction with other players is severely limited and the level of skill in PVP isn't entirely dependant on levelling (except for Banner events).

It's probably easiest just to describe the game modes.

Solo/Co-op:

Story = Play a mission that has some setpieces and cutscenes with up to two other people. Some parts of the level will be shared with other players, but it switches over to being just you and your group (if any) when you get closer to the end. You can also replay higher level versions of missions if you want.

Explore = Go mess around in one of the game's "maps" (planets), where the whole thing is shared with other players who phase in and out of your game as you go between different areas. Has some short/simple missions available, as well as public events where everyone works together to kill a boss, fight several waves of stronger enemies, etc. You can play Explore with a group of 3, who will stay with you the whole time.

Co-op:

Strike = "Dungeons" that take place on sectioned-off parts of the various maps, including areas that you can't access in other modes. They're similar to story missions in that they have some setpieces and minor story bits associated with them, but they're harder and put more emphasis on co-op. These have matchmaking, so if you join alone it'll stick you with two other players. Like missions, these have higher level versions if you want to revisit them for better loot and XP.

Raid = Bungie's hasn't explained 100% of the details, but it sounds like some sort of super-dungeon that's even more difficult than strikes, with various sub-areas, bosses, special loot, and possibly puzzles as well. Supports up to 6 players, and it sounds like that's what they're balancing it around. No matchmaking (supposedly due to difficulty), so you need to form a group before you go in.

Competitive:

Crucible = Assortment of PvP game modes, including 3v3, 6v6, and 6-player free for all. Most of the playlists "normalize" all damage, meaning it ignores your character and equipment level but still lets you use any other bonuses/abilities you have.

In terms of minute-to-minute gameplay, most people compare it to Borderlands (Co-op oriented FPS with classes loot, skill trees, special abilities) and Halo. (Kinda similar art direction, level design, and AI) Some people have also noted that the game's structure is a bit like Phantasy Star Online, Guild Wars 1, or Monster Hunter.

Are you saying it's not like Borderlands because the drop rates are different? Seriously?

It has a button you can press to dance.

There should be a button to disable your avatar.

@topic

Destiny is not the open world shooter MMO that I hoped for :(

Or a button that makes my avatar dance!

OT, but HAHAHAHA.

Back on topic, it's easier to describe it as a loot game in fps form. Lots of similarities, with a hub world to trade or sell. Dungeons to explore with a small party looking for more "phat lewts". Leveling up your characters and trying to progress to a max build. Heck, there's even a pvp/arena mode to test your build. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of what the developers would like you to believe, though pretty coherent as a game.

Bungie talked pretty openly about how borderlands was an influence. They just want to make it better by making the whole game more connected by letting you randomly run into other players etc.

“We are absolutely doing things that would be familiar if you’ve played any kind of open-world game,” creative lead Joe Staten told us. “I mean… Far Cry, even. We would be idiots if we didn’t look at an awesome game like Borderlands and ask, ‘What are they doing well and how can we try to hit that same ball?’ I have never played a game where I have such a great attachment to my gun as I do in Borderlands.

I don't see what's so special about it either. I had some fun with it in the alpha, but IMO it doesn't deserve half the hype it has. It's just a cooperative FPS (I don't feel comfortable calling it an MMO, since it's missing the "massively" part) where you shoot a lot of guys in rather repetitive and uninteresting missions (that part is like an MMO, I suppose). I was most disappointed with how unepic it all feels. When they first started talking about this game and hyping it up I imagined some massive open world where you could perhaps even fly a spaceship from planet to planet, but what you actually get is a few separate maps (that aren't even that large) and a level select screen. Your ship serves no actual purpose at all, it's just something to look at on the glorified loading screen. So yeah, it's not what I was hoping for.

It's pretty awesome is what it is.

I thought it looked boring as shit at the E3 unveil. After I played the beta? Sold. It's that good.

guns/fps . . . plus primary focus on co-op, rpg leveling system that applies to both you and your enemies, skill trees, numbers bleeding from enemies, a unique special ability for each of the characters, loot drops and loot chests (may nut be as frequent, but it's still there), a shield and armor health system, large open areas that are not quite open world mixed with cramped claustrophobic corridors, a sci-fi setting, weapons that deal elemental damage . . .

How can you say the only thing they have in common is guns?

It's any other FPS but with more emphasis on coop play.

Hence, of course, this naturally leads to massive overpromising, the $500m budget for the lifetime of the project, and the pre announcement of it being the next big billion dollar franchise.

Yeah, I don't see the fuss; seems like a solid shooter but we're drowning in those these days. The one thing it definitely is not is an MMO.

Bungie engineers don't even know what Destiny is!

Kidding - Destiny Lead Engineer says Bungie refers to Destiny simply as an FPS, and that's good enough for me!

PSO is an MMO. Marvel Heroes is an MMO. Diablo 3 is an MMO. Destiny is an MMO.

I know people don't want to call it that because MMO's are icky, but when a massive amount of people are playing multiplayer online on shared servers, you have to call a spade a spade.

Edit: This game has raiding? Oh come on guys. It's an MMO.

Only seen videos, but one thing that stuck out to me is all the menu navigation being done with a free floating cursor you move around with the analog stick..? Do I have that right? Just

Can you not move the cursor and snap to each icon/selection with the dpad? It looks like it makes all the menu navigation painfully slow. In a loot game like this where you're probably going to be in a menu as much as anything else (and a game without a pause button I'm assuming), managing inventory and skills, it needs to be as snappy as possible.

I didn't really 'get' it either. Beta bored me to tears, but I suspect that I too may have been doing something wrong. Or perhaps it's just one of those games you can't play alone.

I participated in both alpha and beta, and it worked fine for me on solo. I do hope there'll be more varied missions and enemies, and more emphasis on the story further on.

It works really well. Best UI since the last of us.
