That $1,400 one is a bit out of his price range, but this one looked pretty good:

It would allow him to play games like Dota 2 and StarCraft 2 and 1080p/60 on Ultra settings? Will those parts last a while before needing to be upgraded?

Thanks for all the help!

Yes. That would be more than enough for both of those games. (Just be sure it's in a decently ventilated / cool place as the R9 290 gets pretty damn hot.

Thanks.

On your advice, I did just double check, and found people saying the max heatsink height for that case is 170mm and this heatsink is 150mm, so I think that should leave enough space, unless its advisable to have more extra space than that.
That Noctua is the slimmer profile one meant to be comparatively smaller than their other ones. It still performs like a beast though and your case will have plenty of room to spare. For air cooling Noctua is the best.

Guys, quick question. R9 290 or gtx 780? Which will last longer and which performs better? I'm concerned about the vram on the 780 because it reminds me so much of the 1.5gb 580's. I'm currently leaning towards team red only because of the unacceptable amount of vram on the 780. Rumors are suggesting that the 880/980 will have 4gb. Anyone know when that card is supposed to launch and any rumored specs? Thanks.
There's a good chance they'll launch with 4gb. The 880 is also rumored to be similarly powerful to 780ti with a lower power draw. It'd be foolish to jump on to Nvidia right now with 8xx right around the corner.

The R9 290 and GTX 780 perform basically the same. Nvidia will have more bells and whistles on the software side.

Hmmmm,

Mates offered to buy my PC off me for pretty much what it cost to build.

Highly tempted to go for it and get my X99 system for no reason other than I like new tech

It will do fine. Here's a 11" card inside the NZXT Source: http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/nzxt_source_210_elite_review,5.html

Excellent, thank you. Didn't even think to look up photos of larger cards in the case! Now I just wait until the middle of the month to get paid, and my build will be done. I'll probably have to move my hard drive since I mounted it right where the video card is, but it's my first build so I'm slowly learning how to manage all of that. Appreciate the help!

If you aren't in a hurry wait for NV's mid-September event.

Chigg's brilliant pics of his Mini-ITX build have me contemplating one again...for someone with a soft spot for the NZXT H440, are there any similarly sleek (white) Mini-ITX cases that anyone could recommend? Would like to look into this further.

Fractal Design Node 304 White?

I'm planning to upgrade my graphics card in the next few weeks, I currently have an AMD 7970. I will be playing games at 1200p.

I am thinking of upgrading to the 780ti or should I wait till Nvidia release their latest card?

Wait until the 800/900 series. Should be within the next month. Nvidia is going to have some big event here in 2 weeks.

Current rumor is October. 7970 is still decently powerful so you may as well wait.

That said, the rumor is also that the 780 ti will still be more powerful.

I have a white Fractal Design Node 304.
i can recommend that one but to be honest if I could change it for the black one I probably would do that.
The case (regardless of colour) is really really nice and it can house powerful hardware. Nice temps, nice airflow.

But the white one has a more glossy look (feels like just some white paint slapped on there, it also does not have the brushed aluminum look at the front) as opposed to the black one which does not seem to be glossy.

I use one for a FreeNAS. Looks great tucked away in the corner of my living room. Probably going to change it to a hackintosh server so I can use it for Steam streaming and video playback.

Hey guys, I realized that there is no GTX 760Ti for sale only 760.
With GTX 770 being not very good at value I plan on getting a 860Ti for my PC this winter hopefully.
Any idea when the card usually gets revealed and whether the x60Ti is discontinued?

The 970/980 will ship with 4GB of GDDR5.

AMD have added a bunch of new titles to their rewards program. When buying a qualifying GPU, you'll receive a code entitling you to 1-3 games from their selection.

New additions include Star Citizen, Alien Isolation, Saints Row IV, Payday 2 and Napolean Total War.

You'll have to wait for the unreleased gamecodes

Star Citizen does not include beta participation afaik, at least not until there's a Steam iteration. You'll also receive an AMD only ship in game.

Star citizen? Wow. That's impressive.

So, I was thinking about upgrading/replacing my pc. It is kinda crazy how fast my pc went from "can run everything at high easily" to "can only run shit at low at best". Was it like this last generational leap?

Anyway, my current specs:

CPU: i7 870 @ 2.9 ghz
GPU: GTX 460
RAM: 4 GB DDR 3
Motherboard: Gigabyte H55M-UD2H
Hard drive: 1 TB
Power supply: I have no fucking idea.

So, looking at this, it is probably smart to just start a completely new build instead of trying to update my old one, right?

A new build would definitely be best, but if you don't have the money you could spend ~$200-300 on a new GPU and see a big performance boost.

New build. What's your budget?

Man kind of bummed thought for sure I would be able to build a killer system in the 400-600 range but its just not looking like anything but a stop gap. I thought the market was starting to stabilize to a lower base but it doesn't look like that is happening.

A) why would that ever happen.

B) 600 is enough to play any game on moderate settings at an ok frame rate

C) you can build a great base that will allow for easy upgrades with that money. Even more value to be had if you buy used.

Stick in a new gpu. Ride it out for another year. What kind of budget are you thinking?

If it is going to be a new build, my budget will be around 800 € - 900€. Maybe I can stretch it to 1000 € if that extra money makes a huge difference, but that is a big maybe. I have bought a new monitor a few months ago, so that will not be necessary.

Also, if I only change the GPU, won't I have RAM issues? I already see a lot of games with a 6 GB RAM minimum requirement.

600 gets you a solid build with the new Pentium. High end parts costs high end price. They won't lower the price of the top end stuff. There is a market for it.

So how much does sticking a computer in a entertainment system affect thermals? I'm getting a pretty robust TV stand from Magnolia and I'm considering this for my next build. My Corsair 350D would fit in there with about 2" of height clearance, the front door is vented along with the whole unit has vents, and also the back panels are all removable. I could see next year building a Mini ITX computer that is sickly efficient at 1080p and giving me good thermals. I think right now my GTX 780 that has an insane overclock would be a bit too hot for such setup.

I missed this reply before...

No problem, He'll probably want to install a case fan in the bottom intake that sits just forward of the PSU. That'll help push air up towards that R9 290.

Apparently I'd missed Anandtech's review of OCZ's new ARC100 series SSDs, they're using the new 19nm Toshiba NAND. (more at link)

The smaller process node NAND and the lack of accessories is the secret behind ARC 100's lower cost. Performance takes a slight hit from the newer NAND compared to the Vertex 460, though that is expected since NAND performance decreases as the lithography shrinks. Fortunately endurance is still rated at the same 20GB per day for three years, which is more than enough for typical client workloads.

The ARC 100 provides what I expected it to do, which is its strength and weakness. The Barefoot 3 platform does provide excellent performance consistency and it has proven to be reliable over the last two years, but the performance in lighter workloads is only mediocre.

Yes. That would be more than enough for both of those games. (Just be sure it's in a decently ventilated / cool place as the R9 290 gets pretty damn hot.
Hm... we don't have A/C during the summer where we live, so that might be a bit of an issue. =/

Would this be enough to keep it cool if the room temperature gets to be around 80 degrees?
