Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

An AVS forum member is reporting that a Best Buy associate told him Panasonic will debut OLED at Best Buy in 2015. A Panasonic representative apparently informed the associate about this information, who in turn informed the forum member. This is phenomenonal news for those of us obsessed with picture quality, especially black level.

LOL

"a Best Buy associate" informed by a "Panasonic representative"

Most on avsforum seem to believe the 700b is basically the 800b without 3d and a silver bezel. The 55" is $300 difference generally speaking.

I actually am taking delivery of a 55" 700b this weekend. Got 10% off with movers coupon and $100+ back in reward points, so it was basically $800 prior to tax. I'm upgrading from a 5 year old 42" Insignia TV. Can't wait. I'll post impressions sometime next week.

Cool, looking forward to it. I have absolutely no interest in 3d so the Best Buy 700b series is appealing to me. It's just that there have been no tests or reviews done on it so it's hard to really go for it when the Amazon 800b is cheaper. Also going with 50" for less reported bleed.

Hi guys, I have a question.

I have the Panasonic VT65 and one thing I have noticed when playing Infamous Second son, especially when paused at the menu, is this "grain" effect (think l4d like on the right here
2_grain.jpg
.

Does my TV need calibrating or is that effect of seeing as fairly close to the TV in my room, or is just the game? Would appreciate some help or input on this.

It's dithering/pwm noise and is common to all plasmas. You can reduce it by setting panel brightness to low and/or lowering the contrast setting, but this is going to kill your light output. If it doesn't bother you in normal use, probably best to ignore it. You want to make sure your brightness setting is correct with a test pattern as the dithering is increased if you have it too high.

Ah thanks for this. How do I do a test pattern then or is it some online guide?

I have the same panel, dude. Do you mean the green dots in lower black gradients? You should really only be able to see those really close up.

I can get a really good price on that OLED, so much most people here would think I'm crazy not to buy, but I just can't drop that type of money on something that's not tested a ton and also curved screen.

LG Unveils a 98" 8K TV at IFA 2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJa-MDdBwTY

Lk05Zsp.png

At IFA 2014 in Berlin, LG unveiled its latest effort in Ultra High Definition television, a 98-inch 8K TV (7680 x 4320 pixels) boasting 16 times the resolution of a normal 1080p HD television and four times that of the latest 4K sets that few people own yet.

To be clear, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an 8K TV in action. Digital Trends covered Sharp’s 85-inch 8K prototype at CES 2012, and Panasonic made a huge splash with its 145-inch 8K plasma TV at IFA 2012. Since then,we’ve seen a few more prototypes; Samsung, for instance showed a 98-inch 8K TV at CES 2014 and may well show it again here at IFA 2014. What makes LG’s foray into 8K so notable, however, is that it has demonstrated a commitment to helping push the industry to hasten innovation. You can be sure that when LG senses the market is approaching readiness for 8K, it will start turning out super-premium models for affluent early adopters.

The thing is, the market is not ready for 8K television, and neither is the film or broadcast industry — 8K is still years away. It was just a few days ago that Japan, a country which has always been at the forefront of Ultra high-resolution TV technology, confirmed its timetable for 4K broadcast deployment. According to Advanced Television, Japan will begin 4K satellite broadcast tests in earnest in 2016, right around the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. By 2018, 6 broadcasters in total are expected to be broadcasting a dedicated 4K channel.

Can anyone recommend a cheap (<£300) TV stand for a 55" plasma, specifically the VT60/5?

Looking for something black, probably glass and two shelves for components.

And here I sit in front of my 7 year old LG 27" 720p TV, watching snowy cable TV, in 14:9 mode, so I don't see as many pixels as I would see in full screen..

Yeah that's right. I think it's because I am like 2-3 meters away from the other side of the room and it's pretty damn big so that's what I figured. Lowering the brightness/lighting settings should do the trick. I only see that stuff mainly in Infamous because of the lighting.

Yeah, I play a lot of Infamous too and I haven't seen anything like that. I probably sit around 1.5m away from my 55". Try calibrating, or at least using the THX mode.

cable companies are going to need to overhaul there networking structure if they even want to support 4k, because right now cable companies can't even seem to do 1080p in good enough quality on a 60 inch. Fricken hate monopolies such as comcast.....I can see google fiber being able to do 4k correctly though.

Hey everyone, i recently purchased a Samsung F6300, 46". Love the TV now that I've set the picture quality to my tastes, but there is one thing kind of driving me crazy. When I'm watching a movie, and not in Movie my movie picture setting, the picture if perfect.

However, when I put the settings into game mode, I noticed the auto-dimming on the TV gets turned on, and it can get pretty annoying when playing games that have dark scenes. Tried searching the internet and couldn't find anything concrete, but is there a way to disable this in Game mode, or at least change a setting so it doesn't go off every 30 seconds?

Thanks all!

You can save and view the following image on a PS3 or PC--might work on PS4 web browser (full screen), but not sure. There are 12 boxes in like 1% steps. The background is true black. You want to reduce your brightness until the black background has no dithering at all (get right up next to the screen) and the dimmest box is barely visible just starting to dither. Don't advise using an Xbox as it fucks up video levels.

Wow.
What a shitty monitor this is.

I legit, literally ONLY SEE THE LAST 4 SQUARES on this monitor.
The first 8 ones are absolutely, totally, completely invisible no matter how much i push my face against the screen.
I thought this was a joke at first, but then i opened the image in Photoshop and saw the squares are actually there.
Man.

Right now I'm viewing the above black level test pattern in a pitch dark room. Not only can I see all 12 squares, but the black background is actually black. I'm sitting 8 feet away from my 50" panel and there isn't even the slightest glow. The 12 squares look like they're floating in space. (Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many people can claim the same thing...)

Now that is the hallmark of a phenomenal video display.

That's kinda normal on a monitor.

I'm on a macbook pro (calibrated for graphic arts in comparison to most screens) and that also happens.

Thanks!!

The demo loop is coming from a poorly compressed vidoe loop on usb, you have to unplug the usb and then you can change settings and remove it from store mode.

Ah... a belated thank you, good sir! Enjoy the TV and let us know your thoughts after D-Nice works his patented brand of magic on it!

Yeah? The Dell IPS I am using that I adjusted just to the Lagom LCD test images can see every single step, even if the first is pretty hard. Just wish it didn't have the ips glow going for it.

Was reading some reports at work today about those LG OLED display models already having burn in. Not sure if it's true or just a pissy sales associate.

opening the image on the pretty awesome AOC i have here at work i can see all 12 squares. The darkest one takes a little effort but i'm also in a well lit room.
Nice.
Now i need to try on the Vita and on my current tv, so i can compare with the F8500..when it's delivered... (which was supposed to be last tuesday, but it hasn't been dispatched yet and i'm starting to worry : \ )

I wouldn't be shocked, the oddly aggressive ABL on those sets was always suspicious. There's a lot LG hasn't been telling us about these TVs. I hope the few thousand buyers enjoy their $7,000 beta test units.

Same stance I'm taking on oled. I hope tons of people that just aren't me pay into it so it can develop into something better then what we have had to live with in LCD.

No burn in here and I am using it exclusively for games. I dont even have cable tv hooked to it, justing using it as a gaming monitor.

Got to be careful about early reports on new tvs. I searched online about burn in / image retention on the oled lg 55ec9300 before I bought it.

Just one review on amazon saying that its suspectible to image retention etc, that you have to wait weeks for you not to get the temporal image retention. Then I find the same guy on avsforum.... He only had the tv for a day. Does not play games on it and said in his amazon review that its not safe to play games on it ... Rollseyes.

I had the 15 inch lg oled, only played games on that too and never had burn in or image retention. Also my kuro plasmas never had those issues and I have accidently left it on static image overnight a couple of times ( fell asleep).

Tv store displays are NOT indicative to real world usage, those tvs are on from 9am-9pm everday... At max brightness and contrast in vivid mode.. Thats abuse.

Damn, I didn't know OLED TVs had ABL. It was my biggest issue with the VT60 I had last year.

I decided its time to upgrade my 42 Panasonic G10 plasma to something newer and I'm debating the following (mainly for gaming but also for sports):

Sony 700b/800b (55 inch), or 850b (60 inch) - from what I understand the 700b is just the lower priced Best Buy version of the 800b and lacks 3d which isn't a deal breaker since no one cares about 3d TVs anymore it seems. Are there any other big differences from the 800b? And it seems the 850b is just a larger version of the 800b, right?

Vs.

Samsung h5000 - 64 inch plasma for a really nice price, I understand it isn't as nice as the F8500 in terms of picture quality, but supposedly doesn't have the input lag problems of the F8500 (which I would go for in a heartbeat if it wasn't for that).

While reading the thread I saw a few people went for one of the Sony models above, but haven't seen anyone talk about the H5000 (here or on other sites). Should i take this as a sign Sony is the way to go?

edit - ehhhh decided to go with the 700b after reading some threads on different AV forums which seemed to confirm it's the same as the 800b without 3D. Plus I still have my 10% USPS movers coupon for Best Buy, which will take the price down to $900 for the 55 inch. Too bad I won't get to mess around with it until next weekend :(

Hold on to your butts.

I actually wonder what I should do about my FMP-X10, it's now past it's return period so I can't return it to Amazon. I guess I'll just keep it and enjoy my 1 year head start on 4K content. Hopefully when I replace it with a Sony Blu-ray 4K player, that player will have Video Unllimited 4K support in it's apps and I'll be able to carry the content I purchased over to the new player and not have to re-buy anything.

4K Bluray players better play DVD and normal Blurays as well otherwise bring it on!

I wonder if this will be what will break piracy. I mean I don't see myself downloading 90-120GB movies. Especially since most people are running just smaller SSDs.

So yeah this new LG OLED. If I didn't just buy a new car I would be moving my isf ST to the bedroom. It is the real deal. Absolutely and utterly amazing. Take it out of that demo mode and run your own content if you can and just see the difference. Game changing. Simply game changing.

If anyone has the cash, do it.

Yup it is the real deal, I am gonna post what I posted on the avsforum for this tv:

"Every display has issues, even the fabled Kuro's like the pro-101 I had.. The better question is this : what display overall is better then oled? To me overall there is not a better display then oled.

Would you rather deal with the shortcomings led tvs have?

I have been using the 9300 for gaming 100%... I also used the 15el9000 ( 15 inch lg oled) 100% for gaming.

No image retention, no burn in. I do not even have cable tv or blu ray hooked up to the 9300. Again 100% used for gaming and no issues on the 9300.

The only user Of the 9300 that said issues about IR was on this very forum and he posted a review on amazon: Marty Gillis, he states it is not a good idea to play games on it etc bc of possible ir. Has he played games on it? I have...

I 100% disagree with this. Also if you look at tv displays at stores and say hey I see image rentention/ burn in, well those displays run 9am-9pm in vivid mode... Sorry but to me thats abuse and not indicative to what we would run the display as at home.

I am sick of people spreading lies about potential burn in or ir. I am probably the only person currently using this for console and pc gaming and have 0 issues. Go by those like myself that actually have gaming content with static images on it all of the time.

Crt's could get burn in, so could plasma's and I have seen arcade crt's with horrible burn in but my sony xbr910 never got it even after yrs of gaming on it.

What accounts have you seen of ir for the 9300?? Just curious so I can see what they are talking about

I have not been this excited for a tv and the picture it gives me since the sony xbr910 came out, that should say something "

Also for those wanting to take it out of demo
Mode to see what it really looks like, I wrote this there too:

"unplug the usb cable that is running that horribly compressed video and then take the controller and hit home, on the top right is a clog wheel that you click on that brings up the setting menu ( previously greyed out with the usb plugged in). Then from there you go to general settings I believe and turn off store mode and put it in home use. Then go back to picture settings and take it out of vivid mode to whatever other mode you want to try

Btw, I noticed that their demo feed looks almost interlaced, in that you kinda see scan lines on it, when you take it out of store mode and vivid mode is removed that scanline effect goes away, I thought that was interesting. They really are doing that tv no favors with the content and location at Best Buy. It still looks like from another world with the contrast and off angle viewing versus everything else around it."

Does ISF calibration make your screen warm? I was going to get my new TV, whichever I decided, ISF calibrated. I might just do Cinema mode ISF and keep the Game mode stock, I don't really like super warm gaming picture. What do you guys think?

Agreed. At first I thought this was something weird with the TV, the interlacing. Like you could see the pixels being turned on. But then I played some different content.

vita's oled fares rather poorly with that black squares pattern image. Again only the last 4squares are clearly visible, i can maybe guess 2 more, but that's it.

If you're used to how most TVs by default shift white until it's metallic blue, a properly calibrated TV will look yellowish for a while until you get used to how colors are supposed to look.

Once you get used to a properly calibrated or at least adjusted with the CNET settings TV, watching other people's TVs with the colors wrong will make you want to retch every time you see them.

So I want 45-50+ inches, 1080p and minimal input lag without spending an arm and a leg. My budget tops out at around $600.

My current pick is the VIZIO E500i-B1. Is there anything else worth considering?

Edit: Actually, looking at prices on Craigslist...maybe I'll just buy somebody's "old" plasma. Hmm.

At the time of the PS4's launch, I was looking at the Sony W802A and/or the W900A, but ultimately decided to hold off for prices to come down.

Is there still a good vendor where I can pick up either one of these and is that a good idea since they're a year old?

EDIT: After doing a bit of research, I think that the Sony W600B 40" would be a great option for my room. It'll be 75% gaming / 25% movies, no cable. Under $500 as well from Best Buy.

I just bought a Sony KDL50W805B, 50 inch LED TV. I went from a 32 inch 720p LCD Sony to this, what a huge improvement ! Sony is know for having the lowest latency on big screens tv's. Mine is about 22ms, though Cnet reports it at 16ms.

Someone got a nice trick to put game mode on? I only have Game Picture... Is that the same? Hmmm...

Gotcha. I'm actually used to a warm picture from my Plasma ST50. I just scheduled a ISF calibration on my Sony 700B, he's going to do game mode too although games don't really look that great at 6500k in my opinion. Maybe I can ask him to make it cooler, just with more accurate colors.

Yes that's Game mode :)

Latency is only important for the online part right?

No sir. Input lag is what he meant, the time it takes to press a button on a controller and have it displayed on the screen.
