I feel bad for the woman :( this shit is going to keep getting brought up forever. It's almost a double edged sword, the media going in on this so hard.

What bothers me even more, is that the NFL and other leagues still has this guaranteed money bullshit. Can we draw a line somewhere, that states something to the effect that if you beat your wife, or rape someone, or kill someone and are then released from the team they DONT FUCKING GET PAID. I mean seriously, how the fuck can anyone agree they are still owed money when they get cut for reasons like this.

Actually the NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts. Athletes usually get to keep their signing bonus money if they get cut but in cases like these where the athlete did something detrimental which lead to getting themselves cut the team can sue to get their bonus money returned.

This is by far the worst. It had around 800 retweets this morning.

They were live tweeting the press conference with Ray Rice and his wife. In hindsight they probably should not have published that tweet, but this is something she actually said the conference, not some random message the Ravens sent out.

Wow never seen this before. Fucking HELL that's messed up, they really should have not chosen that to highlight from the press conference. Victimizing the victim, yet again.

I wish Janay would never have continued with this man, because very bad image for young girls :(

So I have a question: is there any precedent for having Goodell removed from his position as commissioner should it come to light that the league attempted to hide the fact that they had seen this video?

What would that process be like? Would it be up to the team owners to move forward?

Only the team owners can remove him from his position by I believe a 3/4 vote but congress also has oversight since the league was granted an anti-trust exemption.

OK, this makes more sense then

My understanding is the Ravens still get a Salary Cap hit. 4 million this year and 10 million next year. Where is that money going then?

Not that the situations are remotely comparable, but he has gotten away with a cover-up before. He burned all the evidence of the Patriots' cheating when they were caught video taping opposing sidelines.

We can only hope that this situation blowing up so spectacularly is enough to get him fired.

Yeah the official reason they gave him a 2 game suspension was based on his wife lobbying that she was just as much to blame, he's a changed man, and all that stuff during the meeting with Goodell.

Ravens aint shit. Them trying to save their own ass after this video was released changes nothing.

They knew what happened and didn't give a damn until it made them look bad. The NFL included. Absolutely disgusting league.

Not to the player. They're most like taking a penalty for the way they structured his contract. If it's a monetary penalty and not just an enforcement of the cap then the money would go back to the NFL.

I'd bet anything that the league will quietly give them an exception of the penalty so they can sign another big player.

I'm glad this has finally happened. It was overdue, and keeping someone like that on the team is an embarrassment.

While he will recover from this one incident of being a wife beating fucktard, once a wife beater, always the potential of being one. I never understood why someone who has so much financially at risk would risk everything on being a fucking douchebag.

That is money that was already given to Rice. Here is how it works: Team signs player for 100 million bucks (astronomic figures here). 40 million of which is a signing bonus. The team pays that money when they sign the contract. Instead of all of that money hitting the salary cap in that one year, the team can spread it out. Therefore, the team already paid him the 14 million (probably years ago) and had allocated 4 million to this year and 10 to next.

It's just a bunch of accounting talk. There are other things that affect those numbers but that's the gist of it.

Like, it goes in the bank of the NFL and just sits there or what? Something has to happen to that money. I guess I need someone to explain it to me like I'm 5.
Think of it as credit.

The NFL teams have something like $123 million to spend on players in a season.

Now that the Ravens aren't responsible for Rice's salary, that credit comes off the books.

However, the Ravens are not free to use that credit elsewhere.

They have Rice's money, but they can't spend it.

This helps me a little thanks, I just still think there is something that needs to be done. Someone above me just posted something about how Ray Rice is NOT entitled to his salary as a vested veteren because he was suspended. While that's all great and all, are you telling me if he was active and NOT suspended and then all this came out he would still get paid? If so, that is fucking disgusting and that needs to be changed stat.

I highly doubt the NFL or Ravens never saw this footage before today. Everyone knew what happened in that elevator, TMZ just forced their hand. Extreme hypocrisy at play here for everyone involved

What I'm saying is that he was already paid. A contract has an upfront payment, a salary related to each year, and roster bonuses. The 14 million on the books is for upfront payment money that was allocated to each year. He will not be receiving any part of his salary or any part of any roster bonuses that were stipulated in the contract.

If he was active, he would be receiving his salary payments and his roster bonuses.

It won't change, ever.
Ray Rice to WWE when?
Technically, he could try to get a job with the CFL, haha.

Unlike Josh Gordon, he isn't on a team right now. A CFL team could sign him.

See this is the part I guess I'm trying to get at. There needs to be some change in the NFL that states that if you are terminated for certain reasons (domestic abuse, rape, murder, etc.....) that you immediately forfeit all money regardless of the contract. If you are cut just because you suck and can't play anymore then yes, you should still get paid what's on your contract.

What this sounds like to me is that if Rice had not been suspended, and then this video shows up today and the Ravens cut him, he would still be entitled to his 2014 Salary. And that is absolutely disgusting if that is the case.

If the video hadn't been released, he would still be on the team

That's what makes this interesting. The video gave the NFL a chance to correct itself for only hitting him with the two game suspension. The commish even said he had dropped the ball on the issue. It kind of grandfathered him into the new rule by bringing the public new evidence of the abuse. However, the video is SO incriminating that they almost have no choice but to inflict a very, very harsh punishment just to save face from the entire situation. This way they can look back and say, "See! See! We did the right thing."
