I should say that I'm having fun, but I don't love it. The combat and gunplay is incredibly satisfying and compelling, and the exploration equally so. I love how quick and seamless it is to hop on your speeder bike and get to where you need to be.

But then every mission is just deploying robo-dinklage and all the dialogue and story stuff sucks. :(

I'm playing with friends and having a blast, we all played the alpha and beta, what the hell people were expecting, I don't know.

word of advice: if you plan to play this solo, don't even open it, return it ad buy something else.

This a million times.

Anyone want to play with me?

PSN is jourds.. It is basically a single-player game from what I have experienced. Hoping to play with fellow peeps

I just sailed through that as a level 6 hunter. Using a handcannon (which one-shots anything short of a Captain/Knight/Wizard if you get a headshot), and hiding to the left of the door for the swarms of thralls. Just stand there, let them line themselves up, and headshot them all one after the other.

Whatever changes they made to handcannons since beta, it's taken them from being probably my least favourite weapon to one of my favourites.

They're absurd now. According to the post-mission screen, out of my ~100ish kills over the course of the mission, about 3/4 of them were headshots.

I know I'm like ten hours late or something, but this advice worked. Hand cannon is fucking ridiculous, and it seems to have a far larger radius for headshots than all the other weapons. Or the bullets are fucking magnets, who knows. I went from being destroyed to very easily taking out The Last Array and a few Moon missions afterward.

So we all know this game isn't perfect. But here is where games shine:

I am in tower looking for someone to play with. I send a guy an invite. He joins. He's my age. We have a laugh, launch Earth missions, laugh more...and it goes on and on. Suddenly I have this dude's story and we make arrangements to finish up the last Earth level tomorrow.

That is what it should and is about. This is why I loved PSO, Gears, Halo...whatever. That's where magic happens. At that point, when I am now running with a 3 man crew, all the negatives? Doesn't matter. To me anyways.

People want to talk about the good, bad and ugly now that the game is out. The withdrawal thread was a bunch of clique formations and had a lot of random shit that had nothing to do with the game. It was moreso annoying than reading someone's thoughts on the game even if negative.

No one accepts my invites usually :(

(Except a few awesome GAF peeps though, had a blast with them)

Where did the 500 million dollars go? I have played for 4 hours and this story is basicly Titan Fall 2.0. And why dont the NPC months move when they talk?
Haha, seriously. I was joking with my friend earlier about how Titanfall may have a better story than Destiny.

This game doesn't cure kids with cancer, but it's the first game in a long while that has me excited to get off work to go play.

I think the last one before that was Persona 4 Golden.

I'm actually not sure if there's a reason to ever switch from a hand cannon in pve. They're the best weapons in the game by far.

So just beat the game and max leveled after 13 rigorous hours. Some thoughts:
  • its fun, and something about the game just clicks and works really well. It also seems like there is quite a decent amount of areas that are inaccessible for the time being, and assume they will appear later in the game's life.
  • Skirmish is the best crucible gametype by far.
  • Hand cannons <3
  • The story was just kind of there though, not really compelling but it picked up near the end.
  • The PS Exclusive multiplayer map is garbage
  • I really hope the sell the soundtrack

Right now the thing I'm feeling the most is the strikes. They need to focus on those and some PvP improvements for the DLC. PvP feels kind of like a diversion to me right now, rather than something I might actually focus on. They also need to jack up the rates of public events and work in improving some of the standard missions, because you run into "defend Ghost while X" way too much.

Also there are some weird basic things missing in this game. There are no audio controls whatsoever; the in-game chat is useless whenever music is playing because it doesn't shift balance when people speak. I can't hear half the shit people say, and you wind up just having to use PSN party chat to communicate. Not even having any volume sliders is a really strange omission.

Really want to get to more of these strikes though, and it makes me hopeful for the raid, as well as future strike/raid design. As long as they can continue pumping out new strikes, raids and loot I'll probably be playing this for a long while.
If you have the PS4 Gold headset you can adjust chat vs game volume with that.

if you wanna have a good time, play with this guy

don't ask me what the story was, all the missions feel exactly the same and there's little context or dramatic stakes to anything you do lmao

Yeah we cleaned up on the Moon.
don't ask us what happened in PvP

I am hardly following the story, and really I'm not sure I'm missing much. One other thing I forgot is that I do actually really enjoy the patrol zones because it gives me a chance to just wander around and explore while doing side missions. That's one of the reasons I want more public events, because I think the solo experience is better in patrol than the story missions.

If you have the PS4 Gold headset you can adjust chat vs game volume with that.

My Steelseries H has this too (and a dynamic version kind of like Windows') but it doesn't seem to do shit with the in-game version of voice chat.

Just not feeling this game so far. Had to pretty much force myself to play it earlier.

It's super repetitive, feels like you're replaying the same mission over and over again. Find some computer device, deploy your Ghost, guard against wave of enemies (horde/firefight mode). Then ghost babbles some sci-fi crap that you don't pay attention to anyway because the story is crap, end mission, repeat. It was like that in the beta but I was hoping those were just tutorial missions or something.

I'm very curious to see how reviewers score this game. I think even a 7/10 is being generous.

Destiny feels like a game that was truly designed by a focus group :/

Or rather that it was just designed with the widest audience in mind, with a focus on a shallow, but compelling grinding loop to keep player retention for inevitable DLC.

The Teen rating says it all. It's like a watered-down, PG-13 summer blockbuster (in September).

Seems like the overall early consensus is that Destiny is afflicted by many of the same high-level issues that damaged other high-profile AAA games such as Titanfall and Watch_Dogs. Rushed development, handicapped by last-gen consoles, directed by focus group, lack of content, lack of cohesion. Bungie may have been in over their heads with this game.

It looks like the game could get a lot of scores in the 6 and 7 range.

Oh, I know! and before I joined that dude, I kept thinking how I had forgotten my main frustrations with the beta which was there is no push to get people together.

I remember in the beta thread I had posted about sending 20 something invites in the tower before someone joined. It was absurd. In contrast, people in PSO back in the day wanted to join because...they had loot to trade! Ta da, go figure. You can't trade in this game.

A lot of people are right: for a game that strives on groups of people playing together, this game does sure make it hard for them to do just that.

You on PS4? If so, add me up :)

Lol the people now saying "you should have expected this from the beta" Are probably the same who ssaid"it's only a beta" while we were giving criticisms

Hmmm...I'm not very far into Destiny's story (haven't passed where the beta ended yet -- if you include the moon mission) but seeing the impressions of it doesn't fill me with confidence. I understood the slow start at the beginning of the game, but if it just continues and nothing really happens then that'll be really, really disappointing coming from Bungie. Halo innovated in a number of ways, one of which was obviously how interesting the universe and story of the main character was in the very first game.

With that said, I understand how hard it can be to incorporate a dedicated story when the lore has to be built around many players, but I still don't see why Bungie couldn't have made a dedicated single-player campaign aside from the Patrol areas because the Patrol and Story modes are, for all intents and purposes, supposed to be separate anyway (and yet they aren't functionally). That just seemed like a horrible, horrible design decision. Even that single-player campaign could have still been focused around co-op, but just take place in an instance where more elaborate set pieces can happen due to it not being anywhere near the open world.

There still could have even been story segments that were kind of segues into the more elaborate story missions so that the world could still feel huge (like getting the Sparrow and whatnot) but the actual story segments should have been a completely separate thing rather than being kind of mixed within the Patrol areas. I also know the Darkness Zones are instances, but I don't think they allowed for actual change within the world (because the Darkness Zones were still explorable areas in Patrol so the world couldn't change as a result).

Seriously?

I know that's a joke but what happened to all that, "Destiny will be like the next Star Wars or Lord of the Rings level of mythology in pop culture," talk?

It has promise, but it's told almost like this is the second game and the story we're given is a refresher of what happened before. It's just slapped together without any real reason.

I mean at one point I had to kill a dude and bring his head back to someone. For no reason.

Yeah pretty much how I feel to. I really like the game, shit tons of fun, and I'm going to be pouring loads of time into it. But I am playing with a bunch of friends so that makes it so much better.

This game is exactly what I was expecting coming from the alpha and beta. Can't wait to see what the raid is all about.

Also I advise to play every mission on the harder difficulty. Much better and challenging.

(Sorry if this has been asked before, this thread is moving too fast for me to try to read back and find specific answers)

How do I get the emblems and shaders I got for the codes to show up in-game? Also, I can't find any of my pre-order bonuses, I assume it's the same issue.

All that may be true, but it still doesn't explain why I'm reading so many impressions about the repetitive gameplay and mission structure.

Some achievements aren't unlocking for me on Xbox One

But when I switched over to Xbox 360 this afternoon I got them. I have no idea what is going on

I really don't want to rehash the same tired jokes just to spark some actual life in this thread.

I'm done for now, I suppose. I'll be back, with a bag full of snark and twisted jabs to dole out how I see fit. Hopefully, though, some sense of sanity will come back to DGAF and we can actually have some fun instead of bitching all the time like entitled children.

Sorry to tell you this, but OT's also will have negativity, saying there's 'bitching like entitled children' is extremely dismissive to actual complaints people have on a game they might still like.

The withdrawal thread was a bunch of people, including myself I'm no saint, largely talking about random stuff and posting gifs as they laughed and were hyped for a game. If you want that atmosphere back I'm sad to say you're in the wrong thread, because OT's will expand on the community and not everybody playing the game has something nice to say 24/7. Valid criticism is more constructive than saying "frabjous" and posting gifs.

It kinda felt like they had a really ambitious game, then realized "oh shit, how is this gonna work on the old consoles" and kinda dumbed it down to "vague-ass story, waves of dudes with boring guns and loot, some unbalanced PVP shit with 4 modes lets gooooooo"
None of that is last gen's fault though. What is partly last gen's fault are the mediocre graphics. Seriously... The art style is pretty good, but Destiny (next-gen) could pass as a sweet looking PS3/360 title. I can't imagine how meh it must look on those consoles.

My only other complaint is that while the gameplay is solid, the act of shooting feels very weak.

Okay, because above everything else that's what I was looking forward to. I love Halo lore, so I thought I would love the story.

There is no story, damn near literally. It's a shame because the universe they created is rather interesting. The story is so nonexistent You could write a book using almost all of the stuff from Destiny and win a court battle over plagiarism/IP theft. >.>

I don't get the 'don't play this solo' comments. Nonsense, I am having tons of fun. Of course I roll up on randoms from time to time in order to help out and the public events and strike missions add in enough co-op for me to keep things interesting. Other than that, I am liking it just fine solo.

This game is the FPS version Diablo 3 RoS.

And I mean that both in a positive way and in a negative way.

The thing that D3 excelled most in was the combat and game play. This game delivers that too. It's actually fun blasting fools. The presentation is top notch, the audio and visual design is also excellent (again same for D3). The interface, itemization and customization are all easy to do with no big punishment for speccing a certain way (again, like D3).

But Destiny has the same problems as D3 which is that the story and writing is lackluster and ultimately there isn't a ton of depth underlying the cool game play. Also the imbalanced class and PvP although haven't played Destiny PvP enough to comment on that (probably 100x better than D3 PvP that's for sure).

Although I have put in 1000 hours into D3, maybe I will put in a lot of time into Destiny. I am glad I wasn't too over hyped for this game, I can't imagine what a lot of people must be feeling after hyping it through the roof.

None of this is the fault of crossgen.

The main thing that I felt was held back on this tech wise were the loading times. The loading times are really bad in this and it's a pain in the ass going to various zones in the game. Want to go to the main HUB? Well watch this drawn out cutscene of your plane diving in for the 3000th time.

That doesn't sound great. :(

But I guess that's what happens when you try to do multiple genres at one time. It really can't be done, like losing weight with cardio and trying to bulk with weight training. Can't be done. You'll stay healthy but there will be no muscle growth.

Sorry, bad analogy.

Yep. I'm certainly enjoying the gameplay. But, feels like Halo all over again. All this awesome looking shit but they just use it as background dressing instead of trying to tell a story with real characters and shit.

Just finished a match where everyone but me and one other guy on the team was booted. So it was 2 vs. 6 for almost the entire match. We somehow still ended up kicking ass. We lost, but I went positive, 24-22. I don't even...
