You don't appreciate it.
I've gotten incredible catharsis out of being behind someone who did this.
*Flips off OP while honking repeatedly*

Look out, here comes Batman. If anything I'm standing up for the drivers behind me who are also being delayed by this idiot microaggressing against them. They probably appreciate it. I'm the hero they deserve.
Anyway, I'm signaling that they should move the hell forward and stop holding up traffic. That's meaningful.
Yep, the guy who honks at someone and flips them off for doing nothing wrong is an asshole, glad we reached a unanimous decision.Okay, people bogart the time of everyone behind them without a second thought, but the guy who protests this is the asshole. Sure.
Some of the replies make it clear that there's a fundamental misunderstanding here. "Just move over" isn't an option in heavy traffic. "Anticipate it" is hit or miss. "Stay in the right lane" also isn't really an option most times (one bus that stops to pick up a disabled person can wipe out all the time savings by itself).

Legal traffic maneuver -> honk, bird, rage
OP I am honking at you right now, idiot
Yep, the guy who honks at someone and flips them off for doing nothing wrong is an asshole, glad we reached a unanimous decision.
There's no misunderstanding, we understand you're being impatient and illogical.
I think it is inconvenient, but not so bad as to be inconsiderate and the kind of thing that should cause someone to road rage. Then again, I'm also the sort of driver that wouldn't turn left without a turn lane unless I saw an opening was coming soon.
You honk and flip the bird? What the fuck?
Yeah, I find it annoying but you know what? Sometimes you gotta make a left turn. And sometimes you're going to be the one inconveniencing others and sometimes you're going to be the one inconvenienced. If your schedule is so damn tight that someone holding you up for 20 seconds causes that much anguish then maybe leave a little earlier or just stay in the right lane.
If I'm behind someone who does this, the worst I'll do is sigh to myself. Usually I'll try to move into the right lane but if I absolutely can't, I wait a few seconds and move on my merry way. It's really not that big of a fucking deal.
Okay, people bogart the time of everyone behind them without a second thought, but the guy who protests this is the asshole. Sure.
No doubt this is something that some of you do. Please stop if this is the case.
I also want to reiterate that the OP said "in traffic". Nobody is really affected if you do this at noon or 9pm.

It would be much easier just to have people stop laying claim to other people's time.
Whoever suggested writing to the city council, I will do that.
You're standing firm on the pretty ridiculous assertion that there's nothing wrong with sapping an hour of other people's productivity to make a turn you could have made without helping yourself to anyone else's time by going down a few blocks?
OP, is it lonely at the center of the universe?

2 minutes for our green, 2 minutes for the other direction's green, then I finally go to move on. 4 minutes.
Who made that diagram?
Yeah, OP shit the bed by making the first post so over the top, but I do feel that he brings up a valid issue.
LA has, thankfully, started banning left turns at certain intersections during peak hours, but the restricted hours aren't nearly long enough, IMO. Instead of 4-6pm, it should be at least 3:30-7:30pm. Also they don't do it at enough streets. Too many half measures in Los Angeles right now.
There's an important lesson here, OP: if you think you might have a good point to make, don't sabotage it by making yourself look worse than the people you're criticizing.

The real solution here is just to replace all the traffic lights in Los Angeles with four-way stops.
Then Be. Fucking. Patient.
Totally agree with the OP. ITT: letting people know their behavior is negatively affecting tons of other people is worse than the negative behavior itself.
Every city employs anywhere from 1 to an entire team of traffic engineers to deal with this very issue. As long as the turn is legal the OP is a massive dickhead. I'll give him a personal fuck you because that kind of behavior makes driving anxiety-inducing for good, courteous people like my wife who follows all the traffic laws and doesn't take that kind of aggressive behavior on the road well.
I know it may seem that long, but lol there are no lights that long in LA. 2 minutes is a such a huge amount of time. The maximum full cycle is about a minute and a half, maybe 2 minutes with an intersection with 2 sets of protected lefts, maybe.
OP, the bottom line is that the road does not belong to you.
Get over it.
Other people have shit to do that is just as important as your shit.
OP made it clear that this is about the fact that the driver making the turn is delaying many people, not just him.
Entirely irrelevant. The person making the turn has every right to make the turn.OP made it clear that this is about the fact that the driver making the turn is delaying many people, not just him.
She could always abandon the selfish turn and find a route that doesn't bring traffic to a halt.
If two lanes suddenly become one lane, even if people are able to merge over, traffic will still be slowed, often for blocks since braking has a ripple effect.
It's not inconceivable that these turns are one of the single largest drivers of congestion besides the sheer number of cars on the road.
OP made it clear that this is about the fact that the driver making the turn is delaying many people, not just him.
I've made it my policy to honk incessantly if I'm immediately behind the driver doing this. If I manage to get into the next lane to go around the driver, I make sure to flip the bird as I go past. More people need to flip the bird for this shit. People need to know that it's not okay.
Entirely irrelevant. The person making the turn has every right to make the turn.
if he needs to turn and there's no separate lane what is he suppose to do? Drive long road ahead in hopes he might eventually finding a decidated lane and double back? Lol...no, that would be ridiculous.
If there;s a road he can turn left into he has every right to do so.
