Destiny - Review Thread

Somewhat random Q: For owners of both, which do you like better... Destiny or Borderlands 2?

I'm having far more fun exploring the worlds of Destiny than I ever did in the Borderlands series. I'm not yet sure if I enjoy the more serious story to the wacky zany antics of BL. I think it's more the fact that it's something new that attracts me to it so I think BL wins handily there. Art style is subjective, so that's not too relevant to comment on.

All in all I'm more consumed with Destiny right now than I was with BL.

Wait, nibs, you keep comparing the game to titanfall in this thread but you haven't played any of the crucible looking on bungie. The hell.

I much rather play Titanfall's PvP than Destiny, but you'd think that be a given considering PvP is its entire modus operandi. Destiny's PvP is like that tacked on multiplayer you get in Tomb Raider 2013 or Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter.

As someone who never had any interest in the game and that never played the game, this is very surprising.

But If Borderlands is the closest thing to it, it can't be very good.

One day the industry will understand the science of hype, you don't overdo it (or maybe you do and get huge sales before the game is even out).

Jeff Gerstmanns Destiny Drinking Game (Don’t Try This At Home)

1. Drink every time your flying robot buddy has to scan something.

2. Chug if you have to fight off waves of enemies while your robot buddy is scanning.

3. Die of alcohol poisoning before you get off the Moon.

Another interesting statement from Pete Parsons:

"We've always admired people like Pixar, and we are finally in that moment where we have this raw, amazing talent that I think rivals entertainment creators anywhere across any entertainment ever"

Well, you did have Marty. Can't say I agree with the "anywhere across any entertainment ever" thing though.

I didn't really enjoy Halo 3 in co-op. It felt tacked on with Arbiter. You could also rush and then be killed and respawn somewhere whatever (sometimes after the encounter IIRC). It broke Legendary.

But yeah Halo 3 had far better encounter design thats for sure. Better enemy variety too. Destiny has terrible things going for it. Bungie revolutionized shit with Destiny. They more or less fell from grace like Blizzard did with Diablo 3 earlier.

I hope the Diablo 3 analogy continues over the next year, because it is now an absolutely incredible game after diligent and very well done changes.

I'm looking forward to the new content, Dave. But you guys already delayed sending review copies until the game came out. Now you expect reviewers to wait even longer, instead of reviewing what was released for consumers still on the fence? Sorry, this does nothing but make you look scared of the reviews and shows a lack of confidence in the game.

On a side note, I can't help look back on all of the statements made about Destiny. While I am having a great time with it for what it is, you guys ran with some serious lines of bullshit. As epic as LotR and Star Wars? Fully open environments? Being able to fly through the rings of Saturn? Come on, man.

So this seems to be overhyped critical bomb. Very surprised.

What's odd is that I thought Titanfall was just as disappointing, yet reviewers gushed all over that game. And that game had NO PvE or End-Game other than the same rotation of PvP matches.

Which makes me think those same reviewers have learned a lesson and are actually reviewing this game based on it's content and not it's E3 hype.

Both Titanfall and Destiny are empty promises, IMO. And it makes me wonder if the cross-gen nature of these games is what's holding them back.

I like Jeff's Destiny drinking game (though it's best not to play it because you'll probably end up killing yourself)

edit: Beaten ugh

Are those things going to fix the fundamental flaws with the game such as the shitty story, terrible story telling, repetitive gameplay and it being a shallow game in general? No? Then it deserves the reviews it's receiving.

Jeff's drinking games is fucking great, lol.

Yeah. Titanfall was only based on PvP, and it did it well. It was still lacking in modes, and that campaign was LOL worthy, but the problem with a game when it tries to encompass various types of gameplay modes is each piece is still directly competing with the top of their class.

And even if you just do one thing, there's pressure to do it well. Or else you're Brink.

Personally I speaking I don't really have any interest in this game, but wow those scores. Isn't this game supposed to be super important for all parties involved? That can't be good

Bungie's lowest Metacritic score that I can find is a 73 for Oni.

It is amazing that Destiny may be the WORSE reviewed title in their company's history.

What a (sad) accomplishment.

Titanfall was pure fun though. Even if a lot of people got tired of it quickly, it's still assured that if someone jumped in now they'd have tons of fun. You knew what it was and for what it was it was great. Destiny promises more and delivers less by comparison, and if you jump in there's still a higher chance that you wouldn't enjoy it than there is with Titanfall.

Loot games are absolutely the wrong games for you if you're asking that question.
Hah, I played a crazy amount o Diablo III and wasn't even close to doing Torment 6 Rifts.

Destiny is just a bad loot game. Too easy to get to the end game and the end game is... nothing.

But this was supposed to be the convention-bending mmo-esque shooter with a story that rivals LOTR.

But, it's a loot game really.

And what he described is every loot game I know.

I've played PSO, Castlevania: HoD, FFXIV, Borderlands 1 & 2 and the entire premise of the games is to play the same content over and over on the highest difficulty to get the best gear.

Destiny is not the first or last game to do this. Maybe it's not for everybody.

I play and love loot games. Just about all of them, actually. I never really understood how people continue to play them after you have beaten them at their highest difficulty, though. I will grind, but only for a purpose. If I am getting bodied on a certain difficulty level I will grind out until I get the levels or equipment I need to advance. Once I have advanced all the way to the top, I don't see a point anymore. The ones that beat the highest setting and just continue to play and play and play and play just for drops are nuts.

Reportedly the most expensive game ever made by far, so yes, this potentially can hurt the long-term sales is game needs.

I agree with a lot of these review scores. But if Bungie is to be believed, then the game will need to be reviewed again in 90 days, 120 days etc.

I've played PSO

Then you should be dissapointed that Destiny fails to live up to standards that were set 13 years ago. In loot, progression, communication features, encouragement to explore, class variety, boss fights, matchmaking, etc.

Destiny should compare its final boss fight to Dark Falz and kill itself.

It's a pity consoles don't have an equivalent of Early Access because this game fits in to that mould perfectly. The fact that the game has shipped with a lack of content as a full price release is going against it pretty hard.

It's still going to, and already has, sold incredibly well. Depending on what they do with post support, and even in spite of that, there's going to be an increased level of scrutiny the next go around with Destiny 2 or a major expansion.

Will be very interesting to see what, if anything, is corrected in the upcoming DLC. Will we see more variety? Better writing or handling of story elements? Bosses that aren't just sponges with waves of adds? More interesting end-game content?

Seems like it'll be a catch-22. Either the expansions add variety and soul the core game is lacking, and only makes the core game seem rushed or hollowed out to sell later, or else the DLC will just be more of the same formula, already being knocked for its repetition.

I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not super deep into it yet. I'm trying avoid rushing through it and then having to find motivation to go back for the upcoming events. I'm hoping that they can occur as I'm playing.

I'm a little torn on the reviews being up right now when we KNOW that more content is soon to come. I don't really like MMOs getting review scores, either. I see why an outlet would choose to review it and put a score on it, but I feel like it's going to be an inaccurate score within a short time period.

$500 million already sold for a 70s game. Amazing marketing plan. Textbook even.

I tried the beta and liked it a lot but for all the hype building around it, I expected it to destroy every single review. I'll probably wait for it to hit the bargain bin or a "GOTY" edition with all DLC included for 40$.

It's hard to justify buying a 60$ FPS with 30$+ of DLC coming soon when I have a backlog and could wait a little.

Maybe they should have released it when it was actually ready then instead of a half baked product? They really are delusional if they think a small addition of a mode will change everything. They are straight out saying, "Hey, we know the game is a disappointment as it is, but wait for the raid mode!!!"
