Destiny - Review Thread

So who else played the beta and saw these criticisms coming from a long way off?

I played the beta and my doubts started after trying the Moon area.
The PR non answer in a GAF thread confirmed my fears. Not to mention
how the marketing machine was insisting that we should lower our expectations. ("Destiny is not an MMO!")

True. It would've been the perfect opportunity though. And they would probably make their money back and then some, it would just be a much slower burn.

Equally it would have differentiated it from Call of Duty and Halo.

Destiny as a concept really just makes sense as that AAA platform for content than no-one dares not to have installed on their console. People want to play CO-OP and they would demand that their friends download it. You have some fun, so you all decide to buy into the content to play together on a new planet. You get involved in Crucible, and start paying for content packs. You get interested in the cosmetic customization, and pay for things like dyes for your clothing.

I mean, it makes so much sense.

I think 7 to 8 tops is fair for the game.

What i would change

  • Instead of 32 'story' missions that are all copy and paste i would of preferred like 10 carefully crafted missions all with different locations and some actually story and cutscenes
  • Matchmaking for every mode
  • No MMO crap like HUD world, crafting, levels, damage indicators
  • No Loot or stats from items but yes let us change armour looks
  • This ties into no loot, have signature weapons instead. People recognize all the Halo guns such as the Needer, the DMR, Fuel Rod Cannon etc. What does Desiny have that is iconic?
  • Option to get rid of the EXP bar in the HUD
  • Proper in game clan support
  • Split screen
  • Skipable cutscenes
  • Map voting for competitive multiplayer
  • Option to turn your light on and off at will
  • Add some easter eggs and shit to do in the levels
  • Add another difficulty level
  • Grimore should be viewable in game, not just through Bungie.net crap
  • Skull system
  • Offline mode
  • No supers in competitive multiplayer, but keep the everything else that makes the classes unique
  • Vehicles should be in the levels instead of some shit that can materialize out of thin air at will
Before anyone says Desiny is not Halo, it's Destiny.

A) Look at the reviews.
B) Do you really think what we have now is a perfect product?
C) Playstation owners don't have Halo

The repetition was clear as day if you played it. Then we found out there was one area per planet, then we got the number of planets...there was the news about the lack of social features, the ridiculous match making system...I got what I expected. Nothing less, and certainly nothing more.

If you did not play it and just followed the hype and marketing for it I don't see how you could not be disappointed.

I have to unfortunately agree with the lower reviews. I am seriously regretting my Digital Guardian Edition purchase. I really wish I had bought Warriors Orochi 3 instead. I lost 100$ to the hype machine. This is seriously depressing me haha. I ain't rich! I thought I'd play this for months.

You're not alone.

So normally with reviews like this, that would be a "wait till it's cheaper" game, but with this one it may be different as you also don't want to wait for the online community to dwindle, right? Hmm.

Yeah, the online community is essential to some of the game modes. It's a tough nut. For the hell of it you may want to buy it cheaper to play through the story, but even that is nothing special at all.

I guess you could buy it on the cheap to play around with the fantastic gameplay and beautiful environments.

Seems about right, I always thought Planetside 2 was way better than this game. At the end of the day, Planetside 2 is what Destiny was trying to emulate, but obviously Bungie failed.

I am glad I cancelled my pre-order. I will pick it up down the road for $10

Isn't this game more comparable to something like Warframe?

Ha! It's an Activision game. It'll never be $10. You'll be lucky if it goes down to $40 2 years from now.

Why? Because it gave the game a score you guys agree with?

Would it have been bad if they gave it an 8.5 or 9 out of ten?

No. Because a 6/10 can't be anything other than that reviewer's honest opinion of what he played. It's a mainstream reviewer giving a game a score that appears honest.

If someone thinks it's a 9/10 game I'm fine with that, of course. But there's reasonable doubt as to whether that was an honest review, or the reviewer being favorable towards a highly marketed, triple-A title. It's hard to think that Gamespot's review could be anything but honest. It isn't high enough or low enough to be baiting a reaction, and it's a score that isn't favourable towards the game.

If it wasn't for The Crucible, it seems like Gamespot would have given even a much, much lower score.

yikes... that 6/10. I'm not even sure whether or not I would pick this up on black friday now. The mingle player aspect itself doesn't interest me so it's less enticing as a buy if you can't really play this game offline.

Its easily the biggest critical bomb in a while.

Um, you have no idea what the term "critical bomb" means if you're applying it to this game.

It's averaging 7's and 8's. Have you even bothered to READ the reviews, or are numbers just that attractive to you?

The critics are simply saying that it's a well-built shooter with solid mechanics, but it's not revolutionary and doesn't provide any real depth, in it's current form. They're also giving it credit for being fun to play with friends, and also tipping their hat to the PvP. Currently, it's a lukewarm reception, at worst. It's certainly not getting trashed.

I'm not defending the flaws the game has, because there are certainly many...but people need to get a clue when it comes to reviews and review scores.

It's pretty clear there was a lot of internal strife at Bungie over the development of this game.

I mean look at Bungie after Halo Reach and after Destiny. By the end of development we have Joe Staten gone, Marty gone. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.

think it kind of depends on what part of the game you want to play...can't speak for the raids but if you have two other buddies to play with i have had a lot of fun playing the pve/story missions.

pvp/crucible might be affected if the community dwindles as the hype dies down and other games like cod get released later in the fall. but that's normal for every game. you only have enough time to play so many games online.

My brief review of this game:

+ Fun and addictive gunplay
+ beautiful graphics and art style.
+ beautiful sound effects and music

- very lonely. The lack of matchmaking for the story missions is making this game feel lonely
- lack of variety to the missions
- boring story
- Poor social interaction
- ??Easy

Will keep playing the game though. I only wish that Bungie will patch this game and Activision continues to support it.

The vision is there, the execution is just poor.

IGN's review may not go up until after Vault of Glass:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/09/13/destiny-review-in-progress-discussion-day-4

On Tuesday, Destiny's first raid, Vault of Glass, will become available, and I'm aiming (levels and time permitting) to participate in it before posting my final verdict next week. Right now, Destiny is an extremely enjoyable, gorgeous-looking game that doesn't completely deliver on its ambitious goals. Whether that keeps it from deserving a spot on your shelf will ultimately be up to you, but my final thoughts will be laid bare before this time next week.

Other interesting quotes:

If there's one thing we all agreed upon, it's that mechanically and visually, Destiny is excellent. It looks great, it plays better, and it was rare that we weren't having fun when we sat down and logged in. Even the Crucible multiplayer, bare-bones though it is, delivers enjoyable PvP combat on maps that are visually interesting, and well-designed. The thing is, it's still hard to ignore just how void of features it is.

It's a theme that runs throughout pretty much all of Destiny: breadth at the expense of depth.

That doesn't always prevent them from fulfilling their role in the grand scheme of what Destiny does, but it does raise questions about whether Destiny's endgame will provide the kind of incentives required to keep people playing and grinding.

Edit: Vince Ingenito is doing the review btw.

And if someone gave it a 9/10 it somehow isn't? A lower score is more honest because you agree with it?

Er...

Depends on how they explain and elaborate their criticism and assertions. The Cheat Code Central review is a 9/10, and the review itself is bad due to poorly presented assertions.

You guys doesn't realize on how bad news are those kind of reviews.

Yep, Destiny has had the biggest new IP launchment in videogame history, making 500 million $ on first day...BUT, when all the people that are waiting for the reviews before buying the game see this reviews, probably the most part of it doesn't take the risk buying the game.

So, this means that probably the game will reduce its sales like hell...and cutting the life of the game, and for an MMO that is a big failure.

Ok, it's true, the game is a success...by now, but if all that i said turns into real? what's next?

Destiny 2? Ok, that's for sure...but, probably Activision doesn't look at Bungie as his "cute baby" and more as a "disappointing son".

All this bad reviews are going to make a bad impact on the sequels sales, maybe a big impact.

And if that happens? What would be Activision reaction? what about Bungie's future as a developer?

For example, look at EA when one of their games doesn't go well, or even if is a big failure...the developer pays for that, EA doesn't thinks twice on closing the company in charge, or breaking all the contracts with them, leaving the company in a very bad economic position.

Activison only cares about the money, and Bungie is the best developer to make big bucks. Even though this game might bomb hard critically, but still it is gonna sell shit ton of copies. Also EA has dozens of studios under the umbrella, but Activison doesn't. Activison relies on major blockbuster titles which are few whereas EA produces dozens of games and has the liberty to scrap off developers here and there. Bungie and Activison will keep working for many years no matter how bad this game performs.

And if someone gave it a 9/10 it somehow isn't? A lower score is more honest because you agree with it?

Er...

Pretty sure people are referring to major sites giving bullshit high scores to AAA titles with no merit. Like the 9.8 for Halo 4. Since Gamespot gave out a 6 it showed that they're more interested in telling it the way it is.

Even vanilla Diablo 3 with all its faults and RAH shittiness got 9s and 10s.

This is a massive "critcal bomb" the likes of which I have never seen in my 25 years of actively following videogames.

Diablo is an established and immensely popular franchise though. But yes, I agree about Destiny part.

I'm glad I never got on board the Halo hype train. I never saw what was so special, so I had ZERO expectations for whatever Bungie was going to do next. As a result, I'm enjoying playing Destiny with my friends.

Those of you who heralded Bungie as some god-tier developer are really funny to me.

I was just gonna make a thread about this. If nobody else does it within a few hours, I'm stealing this.

might give you credit doe
I actually think someone made this thread yesterday, though the question was a bit more specific: have any current-gen AAA games (not remasters or ports) achieved a 90+ rating on Metacritic yet? I think, unless you include the Wii U--which is perfectly reasonable--the answer is no.
