Destiny - Review Thread

Considering the pedigree and the two year's worth of hype and discussion surrounding this game, I would absolutely consider the 6-7s it's getting now as a critical bomb. It's not a bad game, but it's nowhere near what was expected in terms of quality.

Even vanilla Diablo 3 with all its faults and RAH shittiness got 9s and 10s.

This is a massive "critcal bomb" the likes of which I have never seen in my 25 years of actively following videogames.

I agree. AAA games just don't get reviewed like this and I've been actively reading and evaluating game reviews since I subscribed to Nintendo Power as a wee tyke.

What is in October?

I'm glad I never got on board the Halo hype train. I never saw what was so special, so I had ZERO expectations for whatever Bungie was going to do next. As a result, I'm enjoying playing Destiny with my friends.

Those of you who heralded Bungie as some god-tier developer are really funny to me.

ugh. just terrible. Halo is a god-tier series, tbh.

I actually think someone made this thread yesterday, though the question was a bit more specific: have any current-gen AAA games (not remasters or ports) achieved a 90+ rating on Metacritic yet? I think, unless you include the Wii U--which is perfectly reasonable--the answer is no.

Damn, never mind then.

I agree. AAA games just don't get reviewed like this and I've been actively reading game reviews since I subscribed to Nintendo Power as a wee tyke.

Especially with half of billion invested in them. Hopefully the DLC is really, really good or Activision might actually have a slight problem on their hands. It's still gonna sell well, but this could harm the series overall. I doubt the second one will sell as well.

So, today I saw a article (Digital Foundry), where they say that the Xbox One version of Destiny is running almost identical to PS4 version, both at 30 fps. So, the obvious question...

Why Destiny on PS4 isn't running with better fps? 45fps? 60fps? Because it's pretty obvious for everyone that the PS4 has a considerable advantage in terms of horsepower.

It's easy to understand that Bungie searched for the parity between the platforms, mainly regarding to FPS.

But, I want to know your opinion, owners of PS4... Do you think that this is fair with us?

When a game is released on PC, I can run it at 120 fps if my machine allows.

why do we need to pay by the weakest platforms?
Can we keep this dumb sense of entitlement to the DF thread where it belongs?

Pretty sure people are referring to major sites giving bullshit high scores to AAA titles with no merit. Like the 9.8 for Halo 4. Since Gamespot gave out a 6 it showed that they're more interested in telling it the way it is.
Telling what like it is? Their opinion?

People criticize when reviewers give lower scores to games that are widely acclaimed. I just don't see how a 9/10 is less honest than a 6/10.

I was able to return the game to GameStop for full price, even though it was opened. I told the manager on duty that the game is an unprecedented let down and that I doubt I will be the only one to return it.

Um, you have no idea what the term "critical bomb" means if you're applying it to this game.

It's averaging 7's and 8's. Have you even bothered to READ the reviews, or are numbers just that attractive to you?

The critics are simply saying that it's a well-built shooter with solid mechanics, but it's not revolutionary and doesn't provide any real depth, in it's current form. They're also giving it credit for being fun to play with friends, and also tipping their hat to the PvP. Currently, it's a lukewarm reception, at worst. It's certainly not getting trashed.

I'm not defending the flaws the game has, because there are certainly many...but people need to get a clue when it comes to reviews and review scores.

How many heavily marketed AAA games recently have you seen outside the 7-10 range? Assassins Creed 3 had a metacritic in the 80s and Watchdogs was easily better received than this. The only AAAish release that scored this badly recently was Thief and that was a much smaller game than Destiny. I've read both the Polygon and Gamespot reviews and I totally agree with what they wrote. At the end of the day a score is just a subjective number based on the reviewer's preferences. My personal score would be a 5/10 because the PvP is good and the production values are off the charts but I'm more of a campaign/SP gamer and Destiny is a total disaster in those areas.

How about you read over how stupid your post sounds and take it to another thread junior?

This is some gamefaqs tier posting.

It really sucks that you missed out on Bungie's best work.

Don't say Marathon!

Well, it didn't get 11, but yk. I think it's the highest rated new AAA IP this gen, surprisingly.
Keep that in that thread.

My score would be a 5/10 at best. Not a happy chappy owning the digital CE.

- Poor AI
- Terrible attempt of a story; hampered by exposition style
- Ultra repetitive mission design
- No characterisation; all the NPCs in the tower are completely one-dimensional and add absolutely nothing
- Completely non-social unless you are in a fireteam of friends, in which case you could be playing any game and get the same experience
- Loading times are fucking atrocious
- Limited customisation, mostly meaningless cosmetic stuff and fails hard at even that
- No reason at all to explore the barren levels; there is literally nothing to discover, its clinically sterile

It has some solid points, music, graphics are nice, spawning a sparrow anywere to zoom off to your destination is very cool, PvP is decent fun.

But damn is it a disappointment everywhere it counts.
I only played the beta, but these points ring very true to me, as does the Gamespot review. But the bolded bit especially, the lack of rewarding exploration was so goddamn disappointing. Sad to see the main game is as underwhelming as the beta was. Oh well...

Its partly Bungie's fault that the game is scoring like this. They promised too much. After the Beta I lowered my expectations and expected pretty much a Borderlands-like game and I got a Borderlands-like game. Im loving it so far. Sucks about the rest of the people that expected way more.

Also, it helps that Ive got like 5 friends who are playing this constantly.

Honestly I wouldn't say it had 'huge potential' either. AC did something no other game was doing before, it was a true 'next-gen' game that demanded attention. Destiny is nothing like that, it's doing more of what other games have already done. There's potential to get better sure, but it'll always be pretty uninteresting to me.

I definitely agree to an extent. Assassin's Creed was pretty mind-blowing at the time of it's announcement with all of the things it was trying to do. Which unfortunately, is something I never got the feeling of ever with this game. I'm trying to be optimistic with this franchise though, because I have for the most part really enjoyed Bungie's games, even if they all have been Halo games.

And the long stretches of vast emptiness that are only meant to be filler excuses for you to use your speeder bike are very curious, as well. Makes the game feel really lifeless and empty.

...and which give you the nice illusion of actually being on a huge, vast, empty and abandoned planet. And having an excuse to use the bike doesn't strike me as a negative really.
I do agree with most of the complaints and negative observations discussed here though. And yet, I'm still having fun. Maybe partly because it's actually the first MMO-like game with shared spaces and social hubs that I ever played. And I'm still entertained kicking the ball in the hub off the map and then jumping after it to certain death. So, yeah...

But please people, stop saying stuff like "the game really opens up, changes and offers so much variety after you hit level 20 and finish the story". Let me tell you as a level 24 player, this is just not true. The only thing opening up is the endless grind for different kinds of currencies and XP to buy and upgrade rare, supposedly better or at least cooler looking gear by doing the same things over and over again. Not that this can't be fun but just don't say it like that.

The weakest platforms Destiny runs on are the 360 and PS3 though.

And if someone gave it a 9/10 it somehow isn't? A lower score is more honest because you agree with it?

Er...

Gosh, I thought I made my viewpoint quite clear.

I feel like Gamespot gave a fair review, not because of the score, but because there is no benefit to scoring the game 6/10 other than being honest to your impressions. Simply put, I am praising what I perceive to be an honest review.

There are many reasons why a reviewer might give a triple-A, heavily marketed game a favorable 9/10 review just because of what it is, and not because of their experience with it. That doesn't mean it's every review, just that I can't be certain, especially if it the contents of the review itself aren't convincing.

Ps4 owner and I don't care.

Game looks gorgeous and doesn't drop frames, zero technical complaints. Also 30 fps could very well be a design choice, maybe they couldn't consistently hit 60 so just locked it at 30. Either way I'm not fussed, I guess if it looked more obviously gimped my opinion would perhaps be different.

So normally with reviews like this, that would be a "wait till it's cheaper" game, but with this one it may be different as you also don't want to wait for the online community to dwindle, right? Hmm.

I don't think you really need to worry about this. The game has sold very well, and will continue to sell as the game goes down in price. As long as you buy it in the next 9 months you should be fine.

I think a lot of people spent good money on this game expecting a great Bungie experience and are just happy to see their disappointment validated to some degree. Maybe that's not a great way to view things but it's what is happening. It's not necessarily a bad thing either. It just is.

You alright brah?

Guys....

A Triple A game with this much hype, this much time sinked into it, and this much fan interest, getting these low scores is absolutely a bomb. I can't recall the last time a game with this much hype was this mediocre. And don't give me Aliens Colonial Marines. I didn't even know that game existed until a day before it released.

If Sony actually made those games, he might actually have had a point.

But they didn't.

So he doesn't.
Most of us also probably expected Watch_Dogs to be a bit of a let down and it seems Ubisoft's cozier with Sony in general anyway. Exclusive content was a thing for the AC games too, even with the first looking like an exclusive initially.

Yeah, that doesn't mean it's BAD out and out, but the higher expectations are the bigger the letdown when it doesn't deliver, and this is probably going to stand as one of the more extreme examples pending updates. And it doesn't even have the licensed name or unproven developer angles behind it!

Also worth remembering that people (usually) don't care as much when a game ISN'T this mega hyped and is knowingly coming from a smaller publisher/developer. A JRPG gets scores like this such as Atelier or Tales and it's pretty much just par for the course.

Lol both of those games will be multi million sellers.

I really don't wanna go down this road, but it is kinda funny, though. Critically, MS backed the right horse and might hit magic again with them backing Evolve. Sony put a lot of advertising dollars in games that had tons of hype behind them that didn't live up to expectations. It's not a criticism, but it is kinda surprising. They made money either way, though.

The general masses who bought into this game may move on in a couple of months if the content is lacking now. If there is nothing to keep them there they will be gone far sooner than 9 months.

30fps locked is better than an inconsistent/unlocked framerate in a lot of people's eyes.

I think praising a review because you agree with it is fine. What I took issue with was you generalizing, in this case, that a more negative review is somehow less honest than a more positive one.

Why? I didn't say Gamestop should give the game a 9/10.

PS4 isn't twice as strong as XB1 and games don't run at 45fps.

CoD is absolutely going to steal a huge part of its audience and Halo will, too, on the Xbox side.

Haha, Aliens: Colonial Marines didn't even get an OT (well... not really). Everyone knew it was going to be absolute pants, on GAF, at least.

Resident Evil 6 is a good example of an extremely poorly recieved AAA game, but I don't think anyone expected that one to be great, either.

an unprecedented letdown? were you in tears?

I have such a hankering for Phantasy Star Online now. Is it even possible to play?

I need to find a time warp to 2001.

It's pretty clear there was a lot of internal strife at Bungie over the development of this game.

I mean look at Bungie after Halo Reach and after Destiny. By the end of development we have Joe Staten gone, Marty gone. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.

I'd add two things there as well:

1) Bungie today is way different than Bungie of yesterday. Halo: CE was made by a relatively small group of people. A good chunk of those guys are now gone. By 2008 that small group had grown to 120 employees, today they have 500.

2) External strife. Here's a great article/interview of Bungie's studio manager after the split from Microsoft: http://www.develop-online.net/analysis/single-player/0116057 There's a lot of really eyebrow raising lines in there in light of what Destiny turned out to be. For instance: "We’re going to make the games that both gamers and us ourselves would want to play. If that makes us successful from a financial point of view then awesome, but we’re not going to do it the other way – target being profitable and see what kind of game we could make to do that." I imagine Activision had their claws far deeper into this game than we'll ever hear about thanks to nondisclosure agreements, antidefamation clauses, and all the other general anti free speech stuff that gets put into contracts.

the ps4 to xbox one comparison is irrelevant IMO. the game looks and runs just fine. if anything is holding the game back technically it's last gen.
