Destiny - Review Thread

Sorry, but this is wrong. Review history has been set up such that 6/10 is bad. 5/10 and below are generally reserved for unplayable.

You can say it shouldn't be true that 6/10 is bad (and I'd agree), but you can't just arbitrarily change things for one game, where 6/10 represents a bad game on 99% of games but not this one.

Well, it's about time professional reviews start to use the scale properly, imo. And I think this trend (?) actually started at the start of the gen (or even slightly earlier), not with Destiny.

I don't see any issues with Destiny's review scores whatsoever. The game really isn't THAT good, the issues are clear. Also, the average Metacritic score is 75, not 65 or something like that. What I'm saying is that 60/100 would be pretty bad, sure, but the score is actually as high as 75. 6/10 shouldn't be 60/100, imo, but it "averages" around 75, so it's ok. And so is the game, imo. It's just ok.

And I really doubt "casuals" are going to keep playing this for long, but we'll see.

It started right off the bat this generation with both Ryse and Killzone: Shadowfall that were both called "beautiful but shallow".

I will eat my left foot if the consensus of Destiny goes from "meh" to "it's great".
It's not impossible with a ton of patches and additions.

Games these days (especially predominately online games) are rarely the same quality as they were on launch day. I definitely consider Destiny to be a game that can be great with some smart patch changes. Hardest thing to do with games is nailing the look and feel of the game play (doubly so for a MMO) but Destiny has that. Stuff like itemization changes are mostly just a matter of tweaking numbers (increase drop rates early, normalize drops in MP, make Legendary Engrams actually drop Legendaries ect).

Since I haven't played it, I clearly have an ill-formed opinion, but the reviews seem to match what my experiences were with the alpha and beta builds.

I'm loving it. Not many games grab me but I want to play this every chance I can get. My psn mates who own it feel the same way

As a semi "Casual Carebear" I have to say that I'm looking for better waters. I just don't have the amount of hours to grind rep to get a piece of gear. It's like they made the excuse with shitty writing and story telling to say we just want you to grind...period...

Doing the same mechanical boss fight over and over again isn't anything new or great and to be honest its not as rewarding as lets say Diablo 3...

Anyways, this was completely ignoring the context of what my response to the guy was. In the current form he was saying the anti-hype shit is going to die down and the "popular" thing will be to like the game, opposite of what happened to Bioshock Infinite.

Absolutely. I have a feeling many people are going to revise their opinion of Destiny as it's updated.

The game is fantastic.

I'm completely mystified by the reviews. It's more an indictment on the quality of videogame journalism than a reflection of the quality of the game.

Destiny isn't just good, it's as good as it gets.

Remember folks, 2001 got bashed on release.

I didn't mention the reviews, I said that people will revise their /opinions/ in future.
Ah, but you were agreeing with the person that mentioned revising reviews (where you said "Absolutely"). Nevertheless, i would find it quite sad if people went from having a negative opinion of the game to a positive opinion after DLC arrives. Kind of highlights the lack of content if you ask me. Just seems too little too late in my opinion.

I didn't know anything about the game prior to the alpha. I did no research. Didn't know anything about the structure of the game. I came in a virgin. And maybe this matters what I think of Destiny. I love it.

It's incredibly refreshing to have a campaign that is NOT just a lineair affair. Reviewers have been complaining about linearity in games for years. Destiny shows one way to counter it.

The gunplay in Destiny is incredible. It's probably the best in years. Every type of weapons handles differently and changes the way you have to play. Every situation asks for a specific combination of weapons. I've been diving in my menus every 10 minutes to see if I can optimise my performance for the current situation. Love it.

I get that the game is polarising. And I agree with some of the complaint (story, universe isn't fleshed out. And NO I'm not willing to read the lore, I want to experience it in game form). For me it's always good to have a polarising experience. It means that the developers were brave enough to make choices that steer the game in a certain direction, directly alienating a group of players. I think Bungie made a great decision. I enjoy Destiny way more than the last couple of Halo games.

Well, i don't want to add more crap to the topic but...

About the reviews, how many games with scores like 7/8 are considered as classics few years later?

Or even at the moment, Wolfenstein TNO has less than 8 on reviews but is considered as a great game.

I mean, i don't want to defend Destiny from the critics, but press can be mistaken, this wouldn't be the first time...

For example, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze...6 on gamespot, which is much better game than Country returns, that hurts...

Even with this scores, i want Destiny on PC...it's Bungie, they probably make the best gunplay on FPS market...well, Machinegames has entered with force with Wolfenstein, it has one of the best gunplay i've seen in years.

That 500 million being put to good use I see.

I am not sure how you define "linear" but Destiny's mission structure is extremely linear. The only choice is which mission you want to do first but the actual missions are linear as hell.

"Go here, enter this indoor tunnel area, fight these monsters in this area clearly designed for combat, defend Ghost while it does stuff".

The world design. Every planet has SOOOOOO much detail. The artwork and level design is absolutely stunning. The problem is just how empty it all feels.

So many caves with no loot.

I finally hit level 20 yesterday and decided to go into one of those areas in Old Russia that had level 20 mobs. I fight my way through into this cave system and thought there would be something sweet on the other side.

I ended up fighting an Ogre and at the end of my journey was an empty cave.

I think that best sums up Destiny.

This happened to me yesterday. It was impossible to travel into those caves and survive in the Beta, so I decided to return upon reaching Rank 21.

Sure enough, there's fucking nothing of worth in there.

Quoted for truth.

Big issues

1). Cant play solo? God damn it I cant pause the game even if I got something urgent to do for a second. Its not like other random players are doing anything. Most of the time there is no one with me or they are doing random shit. But I cant pause my game.

2). Garbage story, no memorable character or iconic enemies. Great music though

3). God damn nothing to loot or explore as promised. 90% of the caves are same looking, and there is nothing in there. Why is it even there? Just to fill up map?

4). No mission varity (go to a place, take out ghost, protect him while he is scanning and start shooting) the fuq?

This game is absolutely let down if you dont have friends. I on the other hand is having blast playing with 2 of my friends. But I am basically enjoying the gun play and customization.

Sometimes I even have the game sound on mute and we are just talking in party chat about random stuff and killing enemies. Just to give you an idea of how uninteresting it is.

The thrill of clearing the caves wasn't enough of a reward?

This is pretty much what I got from playing the Alpha. I decided pretty quickly that this game was a pass. What more were people expecting?

I definitely noticed him in the beta and was hoping for more.

btw, he's great in The Guest, just saw that a few days ago and loved it. Great action thriller.

I honestly think this is just a "beta" and the real game releases next year.

Some of the design choices in this game are straight up mind boggling. It's so polished in some areas yet so unpolished in others.

Hey look, Destiny OT3 and its mostly Gaffers talking about playing the game. If a large portion of this cynical crowd is enjoying it, despite the circle jerk of negativity in here, I'm sure the casuals are eating it up. Activision already knows the reviews don't mean shit.

http://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-video-games/zgbs/videogames

That's a fun link. It shows what's trending on an hourly basis. Currently all Destiny SKUs are trending lower than Smash Brothers 3DS preorders. Destiny PS4/360 are trending lower than preorders for the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Collector's Edition 3DS - releasing in April 2015. It doesn't mean much - after all it could just be a low hour or maybe nobody's using Amazon to buy Destiny. On the other hand actual data regardless of the potential variance is certainly far more valuable than pulling "I'm sure this is selling super well." out of our collective arses.

Here's the data for all of September: http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2014-09/videogames

And for all of 2014: http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2014/videogames

From the latter we can discern that [on Amazon] Destiny PS4/XBO have both already individually outsold the sum total of copies sold by Titanfall XBO. However the last gen versions of Destiny seem to be basically DOA. I think intelligent sales speculation beyond this is difficult if not impossible. There's never been a game released with the marketing budget of Destiny to end up as critically panned so it's difficult to draw from precedent.

This is how I feel.

I'm extremely critical of games. I dislike the vast majority of AAA titles. My favourite games that I've played this year before Destiny were Divinity:OS and Dragonfall (year of the D).

I think Destiny is GOTY even in its current state, even with all the flaws. I've never felt so baffled by a public response to a game before.

If by "updated" you mean "once the countless number of DLC are sold", then really it won't change anything. Games should be reviewed based on the state they are in at launch, and that's what has been done.

No doubt, the game may end up being much better once all the content is on the table, but currently things are different. There's no reason to revise these reviews at a future date.
No he means updated as in updated, as they have said they would be doing for months now through the course of the games life span

And in here people are discussing what they think of the game despite a vocal minority like you threadshitting and dismissing other people's opinions.

So as someone who hasn't played it...hearing all the talk about it having too little content makes me wonder, what were Bungie putting their effort (and hundreds of millions) into for all those years? What aspect of the game shows the most amount of labor?

They have TONS of content. Unfortunately they decided to hold alot of it back to sell as dlc and to release a little at a time to try and increase the longevity of the game. Its a shame that we have to pay a hundred dollars to get a few months of content out of a game instead of it all being released with the game.

If there's no content out, then there's no content. DLC doesn't exist and holds no value until it's out.

It's quite easy to see the problems people have with the game by just examining the Polygon, Giant Bomb and Gamespot reviews for the game.

IMO: The gunplay, art and presentation are all great, but everything else is lackluster and/or half-assed.

The Gunplay
The art direction
The UI
The soundtrack
The want for loot

These are all great, everything else is meh.

Reasonably large seems like an understatement. I haven't seen the crowd universally adopt a game like this... Ever. Well, maybe COD MW..

Yeah. This is definitely not true from what I've seen at all. CoD4 was was almost universally beloved and had high user and critic scores everywhere. Destiny has neither and in fact the user reviews are even worse than the critic's ones.

metacritic user score by platform

PS3: 4.2
360: 4.4
XB1: 5.2
PS4: 6.4

How on earth is that possibly universally adopted? CoD4 average user reviews are literally double the PS3/360 user score to make your claim even more laughable. And it's not just Metacritic either, it's not getting good user reviews anywhere. On amazon the most helpful post is a 3/5 and it barely has any down votes at all.

The reviews do matter and even if sales are strong out the gate they will start to crater very soon.

Just look at how poorly CoD Ghosts, RE6, God of War Ascension and Gears Judgment did in comparison to previous titles. The bad word of mouth surrounding these games had a significant effect on sales and the same will happen with Destiny.

No he means updated as in updated, as they have said they would be doing for months now through the course of the games life span
Regardless of what he meant, i think my point still stands. Reviews (which was the original point of discussion) are based on what is available at launch, not what magic we hope Bungie will do to the game later on. I don't feel that reviews should be revised just because the game ends up being great a few months after you throw away your $60.

For a loot game.. there is an astonishing lack of cosmetic changes in all the loot I've gotten so far.

All the cool looking stuff is at end game. Exotics and stuff. It's like a MMORPG in that sense where loot leading up to end game is boring or even ugly. End game loot looks more interesting.

End game is shit. My fear is that the game seems to intentionally cock block you if you are near completing a day long grind.
I grin yesterday from 11am to 4 am the next morning, straight.
Between 11am and 8pm I went from 6 strange coins all the way up to 12 strange coins. Then suddenly the strange coins stop coming. Played from 8pm to 4am and not even 1 strange coin would drop. Wanna guess when the strange coin finally dropped....... Yup that's right, it dropped when Xur disappeared. Fucking wasted the whole day only to what appears to be intentionally cock blocked by horrible loot drop design.
Extremely discouraging and unrewarding.

destiny would be a tough game for me to review. i mean, on one hand i love the shit out of it. i find the gameplay, loot grind, worlds, enemies, and even many of the missions and surprises, and multiplayer, extremely satisfying. however, its also pretty rare that there is a game i truly love that has has soooo many obvious ways to massively improve it. could i give this game a 9, a score i feel it deserves based on my enjoyment of it, knowing that there is still so much bungie NEEDS to add to the game?

So the reviews confirm my fears, I've watched extensive videos on Destiny and I want to be interested, but it looks really generic and bland. I'm not totally down on this game though, It's an MMO so hopefully they tweak some stuff and brighten up some areas of the game and then bring it to PC, and I'll probably still give it a crack. Seems like all the people at my work who got it are really enjoying it.

lol at them reviews, but I knew this after playing in the alpha/beta. I can't think of big title game like this that has reviewed this poorly, outside of the FF XIII sequels. Well, hopefully this brings them back down to Earth. They've been riding that H1/H2 MP train for far too long. The game has the pieces to be great.

That's not what I mean. The flaws are obvious, but they don't feel as weighty to me as everyone is making them out to be. For me, the core is /so/ good that it overshadows the flaws to the point they become minor niggles instead of game breaking cracks.

Lol. Not sure if serious

I agree with him. Destiny is one of the best games of the year, IMO.

Don't be so quick to listen to reviews.

The backlash online is strong, but I've not met a single person in game or in person who isn't enjoying the game a great deal. You never know if it will just click for you like it has with others.

If I'd read the reviews first, the flaws they list would put me off massively. I'm glad I formed my own opinion by playing the game instead.

Not saying you won't play it and agree we the reviews, plenty of people have and do, just don"5 be so quick to write it off.
