Overhyped New AAA IP of 2014: Titanfall, Watch_Dogs, Destiny. Which REALLY delivered?

What was your favorite publisher flagship new IP of 2014?

Titanfall was just as shallow as Destiny.

Watch Dogs had more depth than the other two combined. I just wish Watch Dogs had more to do in the city.

Wolfenstein is the best of all the Next-Gen releases.

Mario Kart will be GOTY though.

Titanfall for sure. It's a must play. It is adding some new to the FPS console genre. CoD is now borrowing from it. It brings something new to the table unlike Watchdogs and Destiny, which is one of the most boring RPGs I've played.

My GOTY pick would be South Park Stick of Truth, though.

yeah there was no hype. its not like there were 3 different destiny threads constantly on the first page, a "withdrawal" thread and it's not like it made over $500 million on release.

I didn't say there was no hype, I'm saying I don't think it was overhyped. For a very long time Destiny had very minimal hype. Up until around the alpha/beta and it started to pick up. People were starting to get excited, that was in July. It was the kind of hype you'd expect for a game releasing in a month.

Then you have Titanfall that was basically promoted as the best fps game ever made. Believe the hype, it looks like a true next generation title, have you seen Titanfall? etc. Almost an entire year before the game was released. Titanfall was overhyped. Where was all that for Destiny?

None of them delivered for me. Keep in mind, I didn't play Titanfall(due to it not being on ps4) and watchdogs(because it looks like the most average Ubisoft game ever). Destiny is a great game compared to many other games that have released so far this year but when looking at what was promised and what was delivered, the game is quite a let down. Decent at best. I sold my copy. Considering that it is made by the same guys who made halo also doesn't help. All three have the potential and will likely have amazing sequels.

None really delivered but Titanfall at least kept expectations in check by saying that it was just a multiplayer game and not portraying itself as grand new huge thing.

I loved Watch Dogs from start to finish. Great single player and really fun multiplayer. My current goty.

Titanfall was fun for a few hours but a lack of modes really killed my interest in it.

Destiny whilst a lot of fun at first really became grind towards the end.

None of them. If I had to pick a bottom of the list though, definitely Watch_Dogs. I don't think they could have made a more boring game.

The year still has plenty of time left and some interesting new games are coming. (Sadly some have been pushed back like The Order, Evolve, Battlefield Hardline, etc.)

Overhyped already means it underdelivered, no?

New AAA IP that delivered, nothing for me. I feel like sequels/reboots/reimaginings will rule the roost such as Shadow of Mordor, Alien Isolation. Wolfenstein The New Order is going to be hard to beat in my mind.

I hope Evil Within is that new AAA IP that delivers, though.

Titanfall is a great game nonetheless, watch dogs is good, I think the hack mechanic ia a great introduction for the game. Assasins creed has always been a meh for me. Ive tried liking any of the later games, but it just doesnt get to me. Now, Ive yet to play Destiny, but I really enjoyed the beta.

I feel the sequels for Titanfall, Watch_Dogs and Destiny will be much better. They will listen to feedback, and fix the problems that plagued their first outing. They had to be released to get their name out there, and one way of getting their name out there is being "overhyped".

If you go back and look at three other new IP's from last generation (Assassin Creed, Mass Effect, and Uncharted) their sequels respectively surpassed the first game by a long shot both in terms of improvement, story, content, presentation etc. I can't recall if any of them were considered "overhyped", but I felt Assassin Creed wasn't that great, but the sequel Assassin Creed II really brought the series to light. Mass Effect and Uncharted were excellent games but their sequels Mass Effect 2 and Uncharted 2 were considered the best ones in their series. So by looking at the sequels being better, you can say they lived up to the hype of them improving on their predecessor.

If I had to pick between Titanfall, Watch_Dogs and Destiny I would say that none of them really delivered as an AAA title. Sales wise they were good, and review wise they didn't bomb, but they turn out to be an AAA title that games like The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto V turned out to be in recent memory. Their sequels however, have much potential to be.

Watch_Dogs blows the other two away and it's not even a contest. It's the only game that's going to rate on a Top 10 list for games in 2014, while the other two are critically flawed from a fundamental design level. At least Watch_Dogs is fucking fun to play.

Eh, look at Titanfall and Watch_Dogs more like Uncharted 1 and GTA IV, not TLoU and GTA V.

Titanfall delivered on my fairly reasonable expectations. The matches play wonderfully, and the campaign doesn't really exist, but I never expected anything but a prolonged tutorial anyway. The vanilla game is a bit short on content, but I knew that going in. It's loads of fun, and certainly one of the year's best so far.

Destiny fell way short of my initial hopes, and it met my rather low post-beta expectations. It doesn't seem to be a bad game, but there are far better first-person shooters, far better loot games, and far better uses for my time out there. It's not just a matter of content - unlike many people, I wasn't impressed by the minute to minute gameplay either. With that in mind, I might get it next year for $20-30, but right now I'm leaning toward skipping it altogether.

I haven't played Watch Dogs yet.

Yes, that wonderful Ubiworld, generic-ass fill-up-the-bar gameplay. People can't get enough of that shit, it seems.

Watch_Dogs' daytime lighting was absolutely atrocious. I could never call a game that looks like that impressive. The character models were pretty boring, too. Watch_Dogs was hardly a visual showcase for the new generation.

In the end, it will be remembered not for what it was, but what it could have been, and that's really all it deserves.

Get outta here with that watch dogs is easily one of the most impressive games ever created

Haven't played Titanfall, but neither Watch Dogs nor Destiny delivered on the hype.

I am enjoying Destiny though. Watch Dogs was painful to play.

I wouldn't say that any of them fully delivered, but Watchdogs was the most fun game for my money. But then again I do prefer single player games.

All 3 games were over hyped and under delivered.

They each have nuggets of greatness surrounded by lots of mediocrity.

The question is which game will learn the most from the customer feedback and deliver a knockout sequel? At the very least, Titanfall 2, WatchDogs 2 and Destiny 2 need to be for current gen only to have any hope for greatness. Anyone building a sequel for last-gen platforms deserves to fail.

Agreed, they all offer amazing concepts and potential and the complaints must of been heard. They have full next capability and can work with the actual machines and specs from day 0. This time if they don't get it right then they never will.

I'm enjoying Destiny a lot (most fun I'm having with friends on my PS4) Watch Dogs was ok nothing amazing. Personally Destiny among those two since I didn't play Titanfall.

Titanfall had zero content when it launched, it had 4 game modes, and zero story, so how it delivered is beyond me

Watchdogs, I craigslisted 2 days into it, horrible

Destiny - everything I thought it would be, the grind to be geared up for the raid is real, the new content coming every week is real, it seems people tune out the positive and only focus on the negative when it comes to this game, must be the edgy cool thing to do
Because that is what they said they would deliver. Expectations management.

Bungie hyped all sorts of fancy stuff. And didn't deliver on much of it except great gunplay and amazing artwork.

For me, Titanfall delivered in spades. Watch Dogs was ok (Lowered expectations).

I like Destiny but need more time to say whether it delivered.

Titanfall was fun, it had too little content for 60 bucks but it was good while it lasted.
Destiny, idk I'm not feeling it.
Watch dogs was ok.
Wolfenstein was amazing, still not done with it but damn.

I hope Sunset Overdrive delivers, even though I don't have a X1 yet. The platforming + shooting could be a fun combo.

Get outta here with that watch dogs is easily one of the most impressive games ever created
In what aspect? Hacking? There are plenty of games that do it in more interesting ways than just stealing money or causing little explosions. Deus Ex, Gunpoint, Shock games.

World details? Mafia and GTA 4 have that beat.

Night rain? Sleeping Dogs does the same thing.

Actually, nothing beats how thoroughly bland asshole revenge machine Aiden Pearce is as a protagonist. Like, give him the Razzie, that's damn impressive blandness even in the mainstream market.

For me personally all 3 of these games were let downs and they showed me that Triple A games getting way too much pre release hype by the media and community.

In my opinion Titanfall was the most overhyped from these 3 games, im still salty that i payed 50€ for the digital deluxe edition on PC. I played like 5 hours and thought i'm done with it. It missed a lot of content in my opinion.

Watchdogs was a bit better but after completing it i knew that i probably wont play it again and only pick a sequel up if its 20€.

Not sure about Destiny yet i feel like they have some really good ideas but it all ( especially story ) feels like they had a lot of time pressure, it feels like they had to get the game done and couldnt finish their ideas.

edit: I really liked Wolfenstein though, so not all Triple A games suck :D

I like Destiny the best, it's kind of made for me - flawed gem, needs some work for sure: but the foundations are there.

Titanfall was amazing for the first 2 weeks, then the Aus/NZ servers went kinda dry... expansions divided the population too early.

Watch_Dogs is still in plastic wrap on the shelf, it's now on the backlog till at least post-Witcher 3 :P

Publisher uses Marketing
It is super effective!!
Audience expectation has increased.
Audience hype has increased.

Publisher releases game.
It has no effect.
Publisher flees
You lost $60

Heeheehee

But seriously though, stop buying into the hype machine.

Even if you ignore their hype PR, it was reasonable to have somewhat decent expectations for Destiny.
1) It came from a well-respected developer Bungie.
2) They had a lot of time to work on it.
3) They had a pretty big budget.

But as many pointed out, they did have an Alpha and Beta that gave people a chance to play. Some people were turned off by it and moved on to other things. Some people loved it and are having a great time with Destiny. Some thought the Beta was not representative and believed that the final game would deliver much more . . . they are probably not happy and need to learn the lesson you gave.

Titanfall delivered for me. So much so that it is a struggle to play another FPS without the wall running and jumping. I barely played Watch_Dogs and Destiny however.

It's not been a great start for new AAA IP's. As a PS4 owner I really hope that driveclub and The Order can buck this trend

Titanfall was a very fun multiplayer shooter and despite its rather large flaws I'm enjoying Destiny a lot. W_D did nothing for me however.

I enjoyed Watch Dogs. Even though the story is super mediocre, that smooth-ass gameplay, the gang-hideout missions, and the walking-simulator nature of the game made it a solid 8 in my book (talking about the PC version).

lol, Destiny has the lowest MC and is probably the one I enjoyed the most.

Titanfall was amazing... for like 2 days. Watch Dogs I still haven't brought myself to finish but it's aight I guess?
