Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

I hope Nomura wasn't planning on using the spoiled prince that lives in the castle all day trope. It doesn't look like it, but who knows...

all day

Ah I see people are starting to make up imaginary roles for people now just to feel better. Lol.

For better or worse, Nomura has been in charge of this project for 8 years. A year or two finishing what is left won't change that(again for better or worse).

Then if it really is critically acclaimed, wouldn't you want to make a sequel for a critically acclaimed game? People are gonna eat that up.
FFXV-2 is practically inevitable for better or worse.
If that was true, we would've gotten a FFVII-2 before FFVIII. And while we DID eventually get a shitload of spinoffs, I don't think any of them held a candle to the main game itself. That's my main beef with spinoffs and sequels, they seem to rarely be handled right. I think the only FF sequel to really do something somewhat good as a sequel was FFX-2.

Nomura likely didn't intend to stick around with FFXV's sequels no matter what happened. Around when FFVsXIII was announced, Nomura implied that it would be his first & last (mainline level) FF he would direct and that he would return to his own creation, the KH series, full-time and possible other things after it was released.

I originally thought Tabata was brought in to not only help Nomura while he also did some work on KHIII, but also as a kind of "I'll leave this into your hands" thing to prepare Tabata to take over as the lead for any possible future FFXV games, so Tabata would have been the one to take on the sequels anyway, even before they replaced Nomura with him on FFXV itself.
Either way, I'm sure they can get Nojima on board to help with additional storylines as well. But they better keep Watanabe the hell away from them!

Back then, huge AAA games took much less time to develop, and Square was competent.

I see people say this over and over, but how can it be objectively true? In 1-2 years you can make an entire game from scratch and ship it. It's not a short period of time, and being a director is not a small pointless role.

Everything said about the story implies its a tragedy and very sad. Prepare for the worst ;____;

Judging from the recent threads, it's already a tragedy and lots of people are very sad!

I think most people are just impressed by this trailer and are just optimistic.

so there's already a kid noctis.

well damn.

Lol. Not sure what to think. Have you been waiting for a single peak of the game like most of us, but managed to miss a whole trailer. I'm impressed, ashamed, and feel bad for you.

I'm kinda playing but kinda not. Honest part of the question: Did you miss that trailer?

I do wonder how much has changed because from the footage we've been given there hasn't been anything that's been cut off that Nomura said will be there.

Even from the earlier stuff of him saying we can scale buildings in order to find loot. We see Noctis scale a building using his teleport in the E3 trailer.

From driving a car or airship. We finally see car footage which has the same style as the original car from the very early CG trailers. Plus we've seen Noctis riding on a airship while fighting enemies and we've seen enemies primarily travel in airships.

Day/Night cycle. It's present in this new trailer and it was present in the E3 trailer (the location they fought in was the location of the very first trailer we saw with Somnus).

Live/Dynamic events. Nomura said that events will happen based on the player. For example, in the 2011 trailer Noctis was on a bridge that was destroyed by a behemot but Nomura said if the player never went onto the bridge then it would have never been destroyed. Could the scene with Adamantoise be one of those events?

This is reason enough for me to keep my doubts of this game in check. Nothing major in terms of game mechanics and story has been changed which signifies to me that they're holding onto Nomura's vision even though he isn't in charge.

Yeah, I actually missed that trailer completely. Just watched it. Looks good to me. Now I know why everyone keeps saying "Leviathan in XV".

To be honest, when I heard XV was coming to Xbox One I got upset and stopped caring for XV almost solely because I thought Sony really missed out on what could have been a great exclusive for them. I won't lie!

But the prospect of a PC release is like, hey screw it.

Already 1.5 million views of the single upload for the trailer on Square Enix youtube channel. This might even surpase last year's trailer.

He's only directed the Kingdom Hearts games, whilst Tabata actually has previous experience directing Final Fantasy games.
Tabata has Nomura to thank for that. Nomura is known to push talent in his teams and since he was a huge part of the compilation of FFVII thing, he was one of the people who saw the potential in Tabata and gave him the push he needed to go from directing a mobile game in 2004 to handling the development of a "portable mainline FF" a few years later and now a director of a home console mainline FF. Nomura was very much a part in making games like Crisis Core & Type-0 a reality, even if Tabata was the one with the director's credit.

I think Kitase, Hashimoto, or someone else who still works at Square-Enix with previous main series Final Fantasy directing / producing experience should have done XV, but that's just me.
.
FFXV wouldn't be what it is today without Nomura, so no, no one else but Nomura should have directed it. While kicking Nomura out seems to have stemmed from some shit between the money-hungry suits and a creative person like Nomura (and no matter how much snark I get from duckroll), I still maintain my position that the essence of Nomura's vision is very much intact in the game we saw a trailer from yesterday. The trailer released yesterday looks to play like how Nomura has wanted the game to play since the beginning, the game doesn't seem to be a on-rails arcade gun game linear but still maintains the aim to deliver a massive world you'll traverse through like Nomura has said, the road movie like nature Nomura talked about in the very early days of the project's planning seems very strong in the trailer etc. Maybe there's more focus on a romance between Noctis & Stella/Luna in the game than Nomura would have wanted to do or the scope has been changed or whatever, but the core of the game still seems to follow everything Nomura has been talking about in the last 8 years and kicking Nomura out of the project this late in its life will probably not change that.

I think it's a massive shame that Nomura is no longer attached to the project, and clearly something along the way will be impacted...
But how much do we really know about the full vision of the game anyway?

From what I can see, the E3 2013 target render is really the only single thing that informs of Nomura's combat vision and approach to cinematic sequences.

And looking at the latest TGS trailer,it's clear that from a gameplay perspective, Tabata is about 70% or so there, only a bit slower and less hectic. And even the remaining 30% is something we are unsure due to magic system and vertical combat not being shown.

Nomura is an excellent director. But Tabata is also competent, and based off Tabata's track record and what little we know of XV, he's a decent choice to direct the game.

Maybe something magical would be lost without Nomura's personal touch. Maybe we would be able to even perceive that once we play it.

But that's the unfortunate reality of video games development. There's always compromises, and it's unfortunate that it reached the point where the visionary is off the project.

I think the FF brand is incredibly fucking strong considering how much consistent damage has been done to it over the years.

Anytime Square gets off their ass and releases a trailer, everyone buzzes about it. I point to these GAF megathreads as evidence, but not only that. My FB and school chatter blows up over it too.

This series has fans... even the ~20 year old generation who don't remember when the series was hitting on all cylinders have love for it. And they've gone back to play many of the older games, too.

I don't like that Square can suck for so long... but I am happy that there is still goodwill enough in the culture that when things get back on track, the younger generation won't be like "who?" Believe it or not, FF is "relevant" to younger gamers, even if they know it more as a series with promise.

Well you sure are dedicated! I hope XV is as wonderful as you hope it will be man!

I really doubt Nomura is really distanced 100% away from the project. It isn't like he left a memo that says "Tabata you need to do X and Y and make sure you don't mess up Z. Good luck on the game! Ciao!". I'm sure he and Tabata still work on the game together.

It's a placebo effect more than anything. People are going to be more critical of the game now that Nomura's not involved. Funny how things work like that.

The CEO gave a press release about Nomura stepping down as director of FF15.

Nomura is not gonna be involved with it from this point onward.

Beyond that, do you remember the E3 reactions to the trailers for XV and KHIII 2 years ago? I think I watched the audience reaction videos more than the trailers (I'm not talking about the ridiculous over the top youtube reactions - talking about the E3 crowd).

I love seeing the love people have for these franchises. FF still feels very special.

Well congratulations. You've manged to see two new trailers for what has been an incredibly elusive game. It was best to forget about the game for a couple years anyway but it seems I can put the "forget about FFXV" strategy out for now. Game's looking too good to miss out on. I'm the type to not care as long as it comes out for whatever system I own. A PC addition is really nice though and I'll admit that its persuasive.

He said he wasn't director anymore, not that he was completely 100% once and for all done with the game.

Considering that that the CEO himself gave this press release, I believe it is safe to assume Nomura will not have any future involvement with FF15 considering that KH3 is a project that demands his full attention.

EDIT: Changed typo. :/

Well I hope there isn't a new Final Fantasy XIII game either too :(

Wow. The graphics are fucking insane. I was initially disappointed in the visual fidelity of this gen but this game represents a huge jump. Some of those scenes looked close to CG. I'll probably wait for reviews but what I've seen so far looks extremely promising. Gave me flashbacks of the visual awe of FF8 back on the original PlayStation.

I have faith in Square that this will be good. I think the long development schedule has evidently worked wonders.

Agreed! Final Fantasy still appeals to a lot of people, old FF fans and new JRPG fans alike. The series is advanced enough to attract the younger generations as well invite veterans with classic themes and nods to earlier games.

Some of the comments on this video, man...

Are people that restrictive with what they enjoy? Why does it matter if it's 'not Final Fantasy' in your disposition of the game? You see people saying that it's not Final Fantasy over and over again but they never say why it's an issue. 'Oh, realtime combat? I'm not playing it it's not Final Fantasy.'

I think people should just judge the video game for what it is - a video game. This looks like a good video game to me and that's why I'm interested.

There not wearing seatbelts :P.

Do we know what this is running on? I know they were developing on PC and shipping it out to consoles. But with the aliasing going on I am guessing this might be PS4. I don't see why they would have much aliasing at all on a monster PC. Well they can fix most of it on consoles as well. Although I have my doubts that Xbone will render at 1080p.
