Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor | Review Thread - Welcome to Middle Earf

"Dull campaign" 9+ score
"Repetitive campaign" 9+ score
"Too Repetitive" 8/10
"Its just too repetitive for its own good" 6/10

This is gonna have some fun GAF impressions, I can tell. This year's Assassin Creed's 3

Thing is most of those complaints seem to amount to "it's an open-world game", and while I'm not complaining as it's time the repetitive garbage "content" in them started getting called out, it also seems like this one at least has some sort of consequences to your random messing around with the Nemesis system and the way it handles death, which is more than can be said for the vast majority.

This.

Just imagine the follow up with different characters, a more fleshed out plot, bigger budget = true LOTR music score, etc. The possibilities are endless. Really glad they found a way to make this franchise work. I have no doubt I will enjoy this game when it comes out.
I'm not sure where or how they fit another game in within the LotR timeline. Seems like this is made for this one game. Taking aspects for something else, sure.

There's a good 60 years inbetween The Hobbit and LotR, I'm sure they can fit another in there somewhere. I'd say it was part of the decision to set the first game in that period.

but sony got some exklusive content too..
I'm on XB1, not PS4 so what use is that exclusive content to me? I'm not sure what your trying to say. I'm talking about jumping on the game early if I go digital but I'll miss out on the 2 runes which are exclusive to Amazon, unless they are available just later in the game.

Damn, this really wasn't on my radar, figured it would end up medicore, and I was wrong. May still wait until a price drop around end of the year, but I really didn't need to add another game. Went from PS4 starvation last year to WTF am I going to pick this year.

8 from GamesTM huh? Higher than I would have thought. I'll keep this in mind when it gets cheap and I have cleared some backlog.

oh, sorry i kind of did not see that lol never mind then. i read US PSN..maybe because everyone here is talking about PS4 or Steam.

relax! you behave like i bashed you. everything is fine..

The first Assassin's Creed was super repetitive, but I didn't mind. It was only when the guards could see Altair through walls that I had to stop playing. So I'm very excited for Shadows of Mordor.

Why did Polygon gave the PS4, XBO and PC versions the same 9.5 score when they admit in the Comments that they only played the PS4 version!!! What a stupid and misleading thing to do...what if the PC version is broken at release? They should only be rating the versions they've played and updating the reviews once they've had chance to play the others. Definitely will not be reading Polygon any more for reliable reviews...tut!

Well they only got the PS4 and PC version to test (atleast ign said that last night).
PS4 is 1080p and supposedly 60fps (confirmed by the guy streaming yesterday) so the only unknown is the XB1 version.

Thanks for the info. That's good to hear. GL XB1.

Probably find out the day before or after. Have digital foundry commented about it yet when they plan to do one

But what if DF calls in sick that day?

Was expecting it to be decent, but this is a nice surprise. I'm not a huge fan of Tolkien's stuff, but I'll be sure to check this one out when its cheaper.

They can always expand on the lore with an original story arc. It doesn't have to be cannon.

It does though. IIRC WB has the freedom to do whatever they want with the license, as long as it's cannon. They have some leeway (I believe
Gollum
is not completely cannon in this), but not so much that they can straight up murder Sauron before the Fellowship is formed.

Nice surprise, I will be getting this next month. Its good to see a week where games are delivering above expectation I hope this trend continues.

it sounds like it will suffer from the same flaw as assassins creed games becoming too repetitive. This is always what worries me about open world style games. At least it seems the story is decent enough.

The advantage here is that no one played 7 or more Shadow of Mordor games before.

Fuck. Now I have to buy this! Thanks for making the game great, you fuckers. Franchise games are not supposed to be good (except for Batman).

How was Polygon able to give a score to the X1 version though?

They only played the PS4 version,

I do agree it's strange they scored the X1 version though, but at least they confirm they didn't play it and will adjust the review if there are any issues.

I could understand the trepidation for people who haven't been following it recently - the first footage released had me very worried it was just going to be an AssCreed clone.
I'm not even a huge LotR fan, but the first footage released still had me interested. I'm burned out on AC, too. I just can't remember if the Nemesis system was shown in that first footage or not.

This sounds amazing, I'm just waiting for the performance metrics to come out. I don't want to buy it soon of it ends up having major slowdown issues or other mechanical problems.

Very hyped for this. I'm a LotR nut and I've had my eye on this since it was revealed. Nemesis system sounds great and a good motivator for multiple playthroughs.

Also, the B/S/T thread in the Community section has users with Steam gifts of Shadow of Mordor for $27. Definitely check them out for a soild deal.

GMG offer good, but no keys 'until game is released'. No preloading then? Shame.

Nah GMG rarely releases keys before release day. I'm more pissed at how they've put the prices up on PS4 games from £40ish to £54.99!

I think it's important to note that this games branding doesn't include "Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit". There is an amazing amount of lore to draw from, LotR and The Hobbit represent just a small section of the overall history of Middle-Earth. If this game is a huge hit, I don't think they'll need to tie themselves to locations and time periods related to those big names.

And Assassin's Creed damn sure does not have the Nemesis system. This is the game changer here and the reason for most of the glowing reviews, folks. Read about it.

But then of course the gameplay and pretty much everything else is supposed to be stellar as well. This is not just some scripted Assassin's Creed or Arkham clone, which should be clear to anyone who is honestly paying attention.
