REmake HD PS4 vs. GameCube footage

"Atmosphere" in anything visual would always be compromised by zooming in, more evenly lighting the well-lit parts, removing detail from the dim parts, and making edges more crisp and clean.

Your character being small and/or poorly lit and slightly amorphous in a slightly amorphous environment with menacing hints of things in the dark areas is what you want.

...the backgrounds are still prerendered, no? Unless people are going to completely recreate it in real 3D I don't see why it'd be very mod-friendly or look much better.

Given how obsessive some people within the mod community are, it wouldn't surprise me if they re-rendered the backgrounds for the entire game and redid them for the true HD experience.

It really, really wouldn't.

When does this come out? How much?

All I remember about the REMake on Gamecube was that it looked real good and was fun. Am I correct in the thought that it had new elements that weren't in the PS1 original? It wasn't an exact remake, was it?

Ok, I may be in the minority here but it's not THAT impressive of a jump to be honest with you. GameCube is pretty old now and PS4 should be a lot better.

However, I may just be jaded :)

There's not much you can do with prerendered backgrounds and 2002 3D models (although they did improved them) without completely remaking the game.

Looks better than I expected based on the first batch of pics. Even with the ability of playing it on Dolphin I'm definitely getting this, character models have definitely been upgraded and backgrounds don't look nearly as blurry, the contrast between 3D models and 2D backgrounds is really jarring when you play through emulation.

Thought it was funny that they kicked off with prerendered video but then realized they're just trying to demo how the cinemas are now widescreen.

Yeah, this quite frankly looks really fucking good for the most part and really wish the PS4 version got a physical release.

Yeah, the first minute of the video is a waste of time lol but when the gameplay starts the remaster really shines.

Well, you can. However, the character models were not that big of a difference if you think about it.

Rose tinted glasses is legit.

I don't remember the GC version looking anywhere near as washed out and dull as it does here.
That's not rose-tinted glasses. A lot of games from the sixth gen and earlier look washed out when you see them on a typical LCD. Probably because LCDs typically have vastly inferior static contrast to CRTs.

(Brightness exaggerated to show cropping, the PS4 version is very black crushed)

Absolutely hate the cropping but oh well, Im glad this exists at all.

There's a 4:3 mode for the remaster, they even showed it in the video

I'd be curious how they are capturing the Gamecube version. (Composite, SVideo, Component, Wii component, etc.)

That looks great.

It was really worrying they couldn't rerender the backdrops at higher resolution, but this seems they did a great job with the limitations they had to work with to smooth them out as far as possible for 1080p.

This is so true. It's easy to forget how these games had CRT tvs in mind, and CRT just had superior blacks, contrast, and motion resolution levels compared to LCD.

Good trailer overall, I watched it on YT and it's way easier to the the difference in quality than on the site there, for me anyway.

The lighting is much more of a neutral tone so it makes the game look both brighter and darker at the same time, I quite like it since it just looks much cleaner.

Though I can understand why some people might like the green/yellow'ish foggy tint better.

Watching this though really makes me think, why CAN'T we have a modern game do pre-rendered backgrounds like this?

A new game doing outrageously detailed backgrounds in a survival horror situation would look fantastic, and then you can put the bulk of the console's power into the most ridiculously detailed character models in anything yet and still have it run better than most games.

I think youll find the issue is funding. Who is their right mind would be willing to fund a fairly high budget pre rendered horror game now?

I know there is a 4:3 mode, but what I want is a properly scaled 16:9 version, the whole point of widescreen is to show more stuff on the sides, not showing less.

Anyways, Im glad this exists at all and I know it probably wouldnt exist if they had to re-render all the backgrounds.

Lighting looks worse in that one scene. Obviously better overall though.

The flames flickering on the walls/floor when she goes downstairs? I thought the same thing, the lighting effects did seem too toned down there. Can't wait to play this, though.

Can't wait to see the final version.

PS4 looks very unfinished compared to the gamecube, but it's a WiP so no surprise.

Missing effects:
Shadows completely missing in some scenes
no bokeh/DoF effect

I really like the DoF effect in the original and hope it's still retained in the PS4 release. I think it's part of the reason why people think it looks too clean compared to the GC footage.

Otherwise, those character models are pretty fantastic!!!

They can't do that because the game uses pre-rendered backgrounds. They can only work with what they have.

Holy shit.

That looks REALLY good!!!

I think this will look fantastic with a bit of film grain added on PC.

It's a joke.
I'm getting the PS4 port too :P

Btw, i agree with some saying it's 'too clean'. In that bathroom scene it looked like it lost part of its atmosphere. Capcom seems to have made many changes with the lighting overall.

Looking good and I will pick it up. I do think the grain adds a lot to the atmosphere of the original though.

I'll stick to GC, that lighting is just too much for a REmake for me
and I don't own a PS4
but they're darn close with this one. The environments, the original (I think?) camera angles, all very nicely done.

Thank goodness the dialog is still classic as well

Actually, this really seems not to be the case. Backgrounds look like genuine hi-res material.

Which is why the PC version on sale in the bargain bin is the best value here.

Modders doing what Capcom refuses to do.

Its going to be a lot of work to get it right. But someone in the old thread mentioned some emulation mods that played with reposition the cameras, so there's been some though behind it.

I still own the original REmake but there's no way I'm ever hooking up my Wii again to replay it. The PS4 version will do nicely.

Was there any news on whether this has subtitles? Because that always bugged me about REmake, even though I can hear perfectly fine. Sometimes I just like playing games with the sound off.
