‘The Walking Dead’ – Season 5, Part 1 – Sundays on AMC

They really slammed on the brakes compared to the first 3 episodes, I think they could have given us a good idea how what exactly the hospital is in half the time. I wasn’t a huge fan of the small group (or just Beth in this case) focused episodes.

So the person with Daryl, could it be the guy that escaped? I haven’t picked up on how far are they from Atlanta, for some reason I thought they were much further south (I think I’m getting the game mixed up with the series). As someone mentioned earlier, if Carol is going in as a spy/superwoman to get Beth out, and Daryl picked up the guy to head back for help, then this episode should be setting the groundwork for some awesome action (I smell mid-season cliffhanger).

Eh yeah but now we have the story split between this and Abraham doing his thing.
I don't want a bunch of wasted episodes at the hospital just for the purposes of saving/finding/whatever two regulars... again.
It will probably happen though, because it can prolong everyone meeting up outside of Georgia for the next season/very end of this season.
 
Was my first episode live ever (I watched it live from USA in Austria) and goddamn why do you guys have like every 10mins a commercial break? -_-

In Austria we have none. Only between the shows but not IN the show, wtf?

BUT we also have the german cable tv which has ads during a show but only like 2 breaks max.
 
I quite liked this episode. Was nice to see something different again. I look these views at mini society's and the weird people that inhabit them. Now Carol will fuck shit up and that's that.

'Murica. Ad revenue and all that shit. You have less commercials likely because your television networks get a lot more revenue from taxes. Taxes people are willing to pay beacuse they aren't as eager to take it up the ass blindly from corporations they can't see or vote for on everything from entertainment to health care. :-)

I'm a tad annoyed that every single one of these communities they come across are dysfunctional in one way or another.
 
Good episode, enjoyed it quite a bit. looking forward to the week after next when this plotline wraps.
 
I liked the episode. It was good development for Beth. My gf apparently hates Beth as much as most of you guys. I don't get it. Carol gonna wreck that building.
 
Annoying episode, I couldn't get into it.

Anyone else watching on directv? Those save amc ads during the episode were so obnoxious.
 
While it wasn't quite as exciting as the first three episodes I was surprisingly pleased with this episode based on my expectations. While I am tired of the whole split group aspect that the show keeps pulling, the acting and writing continues to be miles better this season than in previous seasons. I just hope the show doesn't spend too much time dilly dallying tying up all these separated group storylines.

Yeah it sucks to be disconnected from the main group, but I thought it was a solid episode. From Clear, to Claimed, to the Terminus stuff, even going back to that group Rick & Glen encounteted in S1, it's always fascinating to get a sense of the [often twisted] modes of survival people turn to in this world. And honestly, Carol being there erases any reservations about spending more time at the Hospital.
 
ok just finished the episode, and i have a quick question; if Beth had a gun why wouldnt she just shoot the officers in the hospital or lure them outside and then shoot them?? made absolutely no sense why she was able to be captured again after getting outside with Chris Rock. this episode was a waste. also i find it bizarre that Beth refuses to mention any of the events from the farm or prison, this whole quite and scared thing she did in this episode was frustrating to watch. she went from mildly strong character to completely week character overnight. its like watching Tyrese's twin. at least it wasnt filled with Herschel flashbacks or random crying.

eh you dont start a firefight against 5+ cops. she was clearly outnumbered

and why would she open up to complete strangers ?

They really should just do episodes going back and forth between them. Half the episode on Rick's group, half on Glenn's. I'd prefer that to having an entire episode on Glenn's group, then an entire episode on Beth's, then an entire episode on Rick's, then back to Glenn to figure out what the cliff hanger was, then back to Beth to figure out what that cliffhanger was, and so on.

But then it looks like Beth's group will link up with Rick's so I guess I don't know.

I see where you are coming from, but I think that having several episodes spent with one group hurts the sense of urgency with the other group that isn't shown. I legit could not remember (or care) what happened to Beth since it was such a while ago.

My dream is for more episodes like "Clear". Tight stories about survival with only a set amount of characters. As it stands Rick seems like Olimar from Pikmin gathering a horde of throwaway characters which further dilutes my connection to the characters overall.

I thought it made sense that she wanted to lay low a little bit and asses the situation. Plus I thought her looking weak was deliberate, as highlighted by that conversation about Chris Rock and his dad, and the police leaving the dad behind because he is the stronger one. This is further highlighted by the doctor killing the other doctor. The people at the hospital are clearly doing a twisted game of survival of the fittest and power play, internally and externally.

Once she starts talking about her experiences, she will look like a big target especially to crazy cop lady with anger issues.

she could have waited till they slept, were eating, etc. it wouldnt of been hard to kill the cops, especially if Chris Rock helped her do it. and she should open up to let them know she didnt just wander around helpless since the outbreak, that she's been through some shit. because going by that episode the people in the hospital really haven't ventured far since the outbreak. Beth acting helpless and scared doesnt really help her in her position.

It's a waste because you didn't like the main character.


This episode was great even if you look past Beth.

Gorman was creepy as fuck. It was extremely satisfying seeing him getting munched.

Joe (?) was one of the worst type of tyrants. She had a thought but she didn't make a plan. She was also a hypocrite who tried guilt tripping people constantly. Her regime was oppressive because she didn't want to quantify what was a fair trade. She wasn't interested in reestablishing a republic but a dictatorship with her fellow cops as feudal lords over the serfs in blue.

The doctor was pretty amazing. Just when I think he is a cool guy the showrunners twist the knife and reveal he is just as much of scumbag and a coward.


And it was better with Beth.

yeah they could have shown that in 15 min and actually had more go on in the episode. even if i cant stand Beth, the episode with any other character wouldve been just as sluggish. i like the hospital and the characters it introduced, i just couldve done with more movement with the plot.
 
I don't think the Dr. is that bad a guy. At least he isn't outright evil like the po-po and gareth and other villains we've seen so far. He is just a coward really. Doing what he did out of weakness.
 
I love that these guys think Beth is weak, when they've been pretty safe in that hospital for practically the whole apocalypse.

except she really is week since she got smacked around the whole episode, almost raped, and recaptured without a fight. if rick, carol, daryl, glenn, maggie or any other character, except Tyrese, was in that hospital, those officers wouldve been merc'd in the first 20 min of the show.

The difference is Beth's actress is pleasant and likable, she just hasn't had much in the way of material so far so she's sort of just a "pleasant girl". Andrea's actress sucked, as did her character, which DID have a lot of material. Bad material.
 
When they took Noah away, all I could hear was

The only other role that I've seen Andrea's actress in was as The Thing's ex wife in the first Fantastic Four. I didn't like her in that movie either, but that wasn't so much because of the acting.
 
Just remember, folks, once upon a time most viewers hated Carol and thought she was useless, too. They're doing something similar with Beth, making her more "hardened" over time. Just look at those elite aiming skills at the end. Headshots everywhere from a 90 pound girl.

Laurie Holden can do good work (X-Files, The Shield), but they saddled her with a terrible storyline in seasons two and three. The first season is the only one where I halfway felt that they were developing her as a character.

I agree. People complained any time uninteresting characters were the focus a long time ago, like carol, but look at it now. That's how you build interest. You have to give them time.

For instance I never would have cared about Bob dying if they didn't spend some time on him. As long as it's not horribly done it's a-ok. I could see why people would dislike the episode, if you don't like the character then it will be hard to be engaged. But at the same time there were other things to enjoy. I enjoyed the change of pace, the setting was creepy, I like Noah as a character and hope he sticks around, and I really liked the setup for the continuation of that story. And yes it continued to show that Beth is a fighter these days and has a lot more hope than when she was being a brat and cutting herself. I liked that callback too btw.

Wasn't executed gracefully and wasn't amazing or anything but it was solid stuff to build on.

It wasn't great at all. It was awful. And I question the judgment of anyone who dares to justify that as a good episode. It had some of the worst wooden acting I have ever seen in a television show. And that's saying quite a lot for the Walking Dead, the king of bad acting. I've seen better acting on reality television. It's like they asked a bunch of their stage hands if they wanted to act and then gave them the job to avoid hiring some actual actors.

The dialogue as I've mentioned before was dreadful. Beth asks the new amputee what the guard had done to her and instead of simply answering the question she responds with some drivel about Satan or something. Just the typical bunch of fucking nonsense and filler crap that's a staple of this show. It's like none one can answer each other on the show straight. Everything has to be in riddles or as vague as possible.

And, what was the point of the Dr bringing Beth down to the zombies in the lower levels? Like telling her they can't leave because there are zombies all over the place wasn't enough? Hey it's that same 'ol zombies-behind-a-blockade-to-show-they're-a-threat scene which we've seen like over a 100 times by now. Yeah, those zombies which many characters can now seemingly dispatch of in droves with a butter knife are totally impossible for a small army of officers with guns to take care off. Yeah, this situation is a total conundrum. And, how pointless was it that he had to get Beth to kill for him when he could have simply done it himself. It's not as if any of those officers had equal medical training so he could have made it look like it wasn't a murder.

Nothing in his episode made any damn sense. And the idea that these guys would just knock her out and kidnap her out of nowhere is equally as confusing. Why were they driving around in the middle of the woods at night? What's the point of rescuing people if you're going to act like assholes and allow people to deplete your resources? At least Terminus made sense since they wanted food.

When she smiled on the outside at the end I think it was because Noah got away and she saw someone outside from the group (Daryl and Carol most likely) and she knew she was going to get help from them.

Later when they Carol on the stretcher she knew she is getting help with Carol on the inside and Daryl on the outside.

This is what I think.

Interesting. I took it as more of a sign of maturity, she was happy that he was able to escape even if she wasn't and she realizes her odds are now higher. if she saw someone I think she'd be more shocked instead of a slower happy smile. But who knows.

It's awful and they've only gotten worse. We used to have to deal with commercials every 15 minutes, now they're every 5-7. And AMC is the worst about this. Remember when they added 5 minutes to the season 3 finale but it was all commercial time? The episode was the same length as all the other ones.

I think after a couple of years of the zombie apocalypse, all the survivors are going to be tweaked in some way. Imagine coming up on Rick's group. Yeah, a few of them are more normal (Maggie, Glenn, Daryl is normal-ish, Sasha) but Rick isn't.
 
Terrible episode

Its seems as soon as beth shows up the show goes down.

This episode brought back the worst of Walking Dead: stupid ilogical decisions, slow pace, the feeling that someone needs to ask obvious questions but nobody does, they just keep making dangerous/scary faces to the camera and say "deep stuff"
