Now that you're done I can tell my story about that issue. When I met Ryan Browne (he drew issue 10 and draws all of those style issues going forward), one of the things we talked about was what it's working with Hickman on Manhattan Projects. I was curious how much of that came from each party. From what he told me, Hickman sent him just a basic outline of the plot and told him to go nuts. So the outline may have said "Oppenheimer is on a horse at the beginning" and then it was Browne who decided to have it come back to life with no head and then get a robot head. He also had free reign to come up with all the other Oppenheimers that populate the background.

In later issues Pitarra starts using the likenesses of friends and other industry types as cannon fodder. It's fun to try and figure which comics personality is getting horrifically murdered in each issue.

I can't wait til you guys get to issue 20, it's probably my favorite single issue so far.

Oh shit, Browne did the art for that issue? It's damn good--especially Oppenheimer "coming to" and figuring out his surroundings.

I wondered if that was the case! Since I recently read God Hates Astronauts, I have a feel for Browne's creations and a lot of that stuff seemed signature Ryan Browne.
That's very interesting to know! Thanks for that.

And that sounds great. Haha. I'll have to brush up on what comics creators look like since for the most part I have no idea.
Though, I did notice that in one of the pin-ups in the back, Hickman was in the corner laying on the ground holding a copy of The Filth.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to being able to discuss issue 20 with you in about a year!

So I'm gonna start the skype list, add your name if you want to join.

I really like the idea of a group chat, but I really don't like Skype... It bothers me how the process likes to stay open even when you close it.

Browne so far has done four issues: 10, 15, 19, and 21. They're all great and 21 probably has one of the weirdest moments to date in it (and features a Browne original creation).

Pitarra throws so many visual easter eggs into this book, it's kind of ridiculous.

I'm glad you guys finally checked out and now understand my love/obsession with this book. It's my most anticipated comic every month.

I've never used Skype before and I can't ever seem to connect to that QuakeNet IRC server someone else mentioned earlier, so I was thinking about finding another IRC server that would allow people to connect via an app or log in with a web-based IRC client... that way people could just click a link and start chatting or connect on their phone/laptop if they feel so inclined.

I'm down for the simplest, most accessible option.

Yeah, I've noticed quite a few. I love it. There are so many treats in the backgrounds of panels. He does some crazy detailed work.
Like, I know this is going to sound really weird, but in one of the panels that shows the general's office, among a ton of other stuff around the office, Pitarra drew a power strip on the ground (connected to the lamp and the computer I think). I've never seen anyone draw a power strip. It's such a normal thing that's in nearly every room in the real world, but nobody ever draws them. The rooms Pitarra draws are fully lived-in rooms. It's crazy.
I did feel a bit strange being impressed by a drawn power strip though.

Seconded.
Not necessarily because I'm lazy, but mostly because I want it to be so that anyone could just look in the OP of this thread, click a link, and be chatting with our group.
So yeah, that sounds good, fauxtrot.

For Carol specifically, I always recommend Ms. Marvel Vol 2 (2006-2010).

For Marvel in general:
Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos Imperative.
Brubaker's Captain America
Fraction's Hawkguy
Marvel Now Deadpool
Hickman's Marvel Now Avengers/New Avengers and Infinity

Also, obligatory recommendation for Chris Yost's Scarlet Spider and New Warriors, unless you hate joy.

For the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series do you have to read all that other stuff like Nova ongoing, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, and all those other spinoffs? I read all the annihilation and conquest stuff but it was a real slog to get through all of those issues. Can i just read the GOTG ongoing and thanos imperative or will I miss huge chunks of the plot?

I've never used IRC or Skype, but there have been many a slow Friday afternoon at work when I wished some of y'all were on my Google chat/hangouts/whatever it's called now contacts list to talk comics.

Every time he draws a room, office, or anything with shelves, I spend forever going over the panels to see what he's hidden away. Sometimes it's something super ordinary like that power strip and sometimes it's funny stuff, but it's always worth investigating.

You'll want Nova for Thanos Imperative. Everything else, you can just read the ongoings.

1. Batman & Son
2. The Black Glove
3. Batman RIP
4. “RIP the Missing Chapter” from Time and the Batman
5. Batman and Robin: Vol. 1 - Batman Reborn
6. Batman #700 from Time and the Batman
7. Batman and Robin: Vol. 2 - Batman vs. Robin
8. The Return of Bruce Wayne
9. Batman and Robin: Vol. 3 - Batman and Robin Must Die!
10. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 1
11. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 1 - Demon Star
12. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 2 - Gotham’s Most Wanted

This is the list I am working from. Batman & Son plus The Black Glove are in one deluxe trade now.

You could add Final Crisis to that list, just after RIP/Missing Chapter IIRC. 52 also has a couple of chapters with Bruce Wayne on them that are written by Morrison. I used this guide to read the whole thing: http://comicsastonish.com/2012/01/04/a-readers-guide-to-grant-morrisons-batman/

Ordered Daredevil 500. Very interested in the Nocenti Story, the pages posted a few days ago were so great looking.

Correct, now in January. It will include the debut of bunch of redrawn pages by Burnham, pages that originally had fill-in artists during some of the last Inc issues (IIRC, something like 20 pages total across issues 6-10 of Inc, the New 52 run).

Yeah kinda bummed. The Absolute Format may be really worth the money when it comes to paper quality, but for me its far to big and the page/price ratio is way to high. And the pages are to big.

Their Deluxe Edition Line is great, but when it comes to Collected Editions in general, Marvel is far superior in every way.

I don't know. The paper on both GOTG Complete Collection and the Alias Omnibus seems rather thin.

Okay, so the first trade of the rebooted Sonic (subtitled Countdown to Chaos (which I mention because they're just releasing them as "Sonic the Hedgehog Vol. #x", making them impossible to find unless you know the subtitle), and... it was really, really good. Like, I actually enjoyed it as much as the Mega Man series, which I wasn't expecting the Sonic comics to ever manage! It's an interesting reboot where it's kind of hard to tell just what's still around and what's changed, and for the most part this first volume is the characters trying to sort that out while the new status quo gets to show itself off. This really looks like it's what a Sonic comic always should have been, though, and I'm excited. Also kind of weird that it seems to be clearly setting up for at least a partial adaptation of Sonic Unleashed, definitely not something I would've expected!

Wow.

CMX just put those deluxe 100 bullets collections up. $17 for 19 issues. Insane deals on so many DC collections.

Anyway! I think there's an interesting (sane!) discussion to be had about art style. I think there's a level of identification in comic art and characters, and for some readers, expressive styles get in the way of at identification. I don't think either side is right or wrong, it's just the way they look at things. And with comics, it's heightened, because who wants stuff getting in the way of their stories!

Anyway, I think it's actually pretty interesting.

You already have the second Guardians Complete Collection? :D

I was talking more about the Size of the collections and the range of possible lines to pick from. For exemple, I can read Brubakers Daredevil als Tradepaperbacks, as an Oversized Omnibus and as Complete Collections with the transportability of Trades and a hell of content (Up to 20 Issues). And then there are still things like Epic Collections and Oversized Hardcovers. Much more possiblity to pick from.

Hmm... possibly a collaboration between Lemire and Emi Lenox? Or separate things? Either way, I'm game for it all. Lenox's EmiTown along with her art in general is super charming.

- CBR: SNYDER AND JOCK'S "WYTCHES" #1 TOPS 90K IN SALES
With just one issue released, "Wytches" looks like a legitimate hit for Image Comics. CBR News has learned that the first issue of the series, released last month, has passed the 90,000 mark in combined orders. Image has confirmed that the issue has reached 92,131 copies between its first two printings, with the first printing netting 81,083 in initial retailer orders.

For the sake of comparison, Image shared that Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta's "Outcast" #1, released in late June of this year, launched with 84,992 in initial orders and has reached 103,551 over six printings. Image expects "Wytches" #1 to eventually hit a similar number.
Damn. Snyder and Jock pulling in Kirkman numbers.

In later issues Pitarra starts using the likenesses of friends and other industry types as cannon fodder. It's fun to try and figure which comics personality is getting horrifically murdered in each issue.

You know what I meant. :D BOth = gotg1 + alias omnibus

But yeah, the range of collections you mention is true. They have options across a wider range of price points.

I would like more premium entries though. I have Marvel Unlimited, so I only buy Marvel books I really like. I would love an Absolute version of the GOTG run.

Which con you going to? Scope out who will be there (artists, vendors, etc) and make a list of things you will potentially buy and then just throw in another $200 for misc items and food.

As for other items, take a backpack, snacks and your drink(s) of choice. Also, take any floppies or trades you want signed if any of their respective creators are there.

thanks! it'll be the tulsa comic con. i think it's the 1st time they've had it here so i don't know what to expect. i figure i'll bring like.... $200 in cash in case i want anything but i don't plan on getting stuff really.... there doesn't look like there's to many big people there. rob liefield will be there... maybe ill get him to sign some old x-force comics but i only have about 5 hrs and i'd rather not spend to much of it standing in line...

Isnt this the Adamantium Collection line? Ive heard that these books are again bigger than Omnibuses. They have just released two books in this line (One Wolverine Best of and one Avengers Best of).

Quakenet is probably the most used IRC server still out there (maybe with Freenode, but they are not open to channels about just any topic).
If you type webchat quakenet into google you immediately get a working javascript client:

I'm looking forward to this and the Gamora solo book. But man, if they leave GotG, will there be any reason left to read that book?

Also, IST finally shipped my order. Howard the Duck omnibus + Bride's Story Vol.6. :D

You're doing the lord's work, my man. Maybe we can put that link in future posts under the Top 3 results? I got it working on my phone too, so I'll be idling in there from here on out. Y'all should come get your girly hijinks on in there!

Don't worry, it's not a substitute for this thread... just a place for the less comics related every day crap some of you love and some of you hate.

Alright guys, $20 bucks to spend on the Comixology Morrison sale. The only thing I have from that selection is Joe the Barbarian. What do I get?
