Okay okay. I'll say it.

AXIS is kind of a mess.

HOLY MOLEY

YOU'VE LOST BIRDIE

YOU DONE GOOFED UP MARVEL

YOU DONE GOOFED UP BAD

(You're absolutely right, but also: man, I can't wait for the adventures of Bay Area Tech Bro Tony Stark, force-feeding Soylent to poor people and advocating for the return of slavery, probably. I can totally see Tom Taylor making that take work.)

It's just like, all those character moments that make Remender books work have been stripped out. I can't be the Inversion without seeing it happen. He's just showing us results results results.

Wait, didn't that series finish? And, did anybody actually keep up with it? I just want some spoilers on what the end of it is. I think it's the most boring Supes story I've read since Grounded.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS.

I told you bros. I WARNED YOU. Remender Marvel aint what it used to be, aint what it used to be.

Now for Marvel books to be shit for like half a year/a year while this tired crap plays out. Superior Spider-Man has essentially infected all of Marvel because it was "such a good new idea".

Wait you don't like Superman stories where Superman comes into contact with someone as powerful as him that he never knew about and this information irrevocably changes the way he views the world?

And the way the world views...him?

It's groundbreaking stuff man.

Marvel is triple shipping AXIS though so they can get their continuity-changing-shitty-event book over in three months.

Nah, I love Geoff Johns' current Superman arc!

Got me the first issue of Dead Island without any sort of knowledge on the game or the narrative and... it's pretty fun!
It's a light, dumb read with a nice acknowledgement of the way that we perceive zombies in our culture.
It has a few references to other undead media, but it keeps it fresh with the two main characters.
There was more exposition than zombie in this issue, but it works well for a three-issue series. I'm looking forward to the next issue.

Uncanny Avengers was great. But his strengths are basically going to get kicked to the curb when Marvel wants to triple-ship an event book.

IST update is up.

How is The Wake?

Not a ComicGAF regular but I found the art really nice, story a bit less so, felt like something that could have been a bit longer, so it felt rushed and a bit confusing towards the end? Then again I'm more used to reading manga and maybe just not used to the pacing.

It is, it's the same character, one happens in a weird dystopic future where's everything fucked for reasons while the other happens in the present and everything is also fucked, for reasons. Though it's incredibly well done, you don't need to read Future's End, it's a tie-in to something bigger and dumber. If you were to though, it goes after Grayson #1.

Also: finally bit the bullet on buying Kill Your Boyfriend, and, it's totally about Literally Grant Morrison being a bad influence, right?

Ok, thanks. I'll probably skip "Future's End" then. Other than I don't really care know anything about or care about the event it is tied to, I also think the holographic cover looks like butts.

Outside of the Forever Evil event, was there any other issues that lead up to the beginning of Grayson? I guess the last few Nightwing issues?

Holy shit, Marvel must know they're in trouble now.

I agree though, it seems both very 90s and shallow but also too decompressed. Three issues fighting the skull in a nondescript background was a bit much I think, could have done it in one issue.

Ah, dude, don't skip Grayson Future's End. Seriously, I know Future's End as a whole is ass, but Grayon is entirely standalone, and is an absolutely great issue with one of the most clever narrative structures I've seen in modern big-two books. It's really smart and well done. Just get it without the dumb 3-d cover so you don't have to pay an extra dollar for DC's wacky cover hijinx horseshit.

IIRC it's just the final issue of Nightwing. Was bad, avoid. Grayson is somewhat of a fresh start.

Gonna add my thoughts to Slugs. Grayson Future's End is absolutely fantastic and worth your time and money. Not only is it a great narrative piece in composition and style but it'll help you frame the way you view the relationship between Helena and Dick in the regular issues.

Thinking about it, I think the story presentation in that issue is something that can only work in the comics medium.

Yeah looks like MIles is the only non-616 representation there, unless I'm missing something. Interesting.

edit: oh that's ultimate reed too. very interesting.

Goddamn ASM (Spider-Verse pt1.) was freaking grim.
I thought the bodies on the table were dead because of the state they were in but then one of them talked...holy shit

Alright, you all convinced me. I'll pickup Grayson: Future's End along with Grayson #4 today after work. Hopefully the store has some non-holographic versions of Future's End. If not, oh well.

So, I need thoughts on Catwoman. I've always liked the character and I've read the first two issues from her series in Nu52 awhile back, but how is the rest of it? I've been catching up on early Nu52 stuff at my local Barnes & Noble, but they don't have any of the Catwoman trades. What's the general consensus?

Don't bother. It was complete crap. Skip to the most recent Catwoman issue where the new team took over. Pretend Ann Nocenti doesn't exist.

The initial Judd Winnick and March stuff was super sexy and enjoyable. Everything Judd Winnick writes is filtered through cliches but it was still a fun book. Avoid the fuck out of everything after Winnick left like it's full-outbreak herpes.

Get the most recent issue with the newest team (issue 35?). It's a bit pompous, but I think they're off to a solid start.

Actually yeah. I am being harsh on Judd Winnick. Everything you said nails my feelings on the series. I really dug Guillem March's art early on.

I think I would have been more on board with this week's Detective Comics without the Dick stuff, which was just odd on so many levels. As it is this is only a good conclusion to a great opener.

Dug the ending though and JPL and Dave Stewart killed it~

I read the first part last night and thought it was fantastic. The art was really good looking. Very detailed.

Spider-Verse is fantastic. The premise sounded cheesy to me at first but damn it's great.
There are so many moments in this issue that could be whole entire stories by themselves.
Gwen, Mayday, Miles

The only thing is I find the villains boring.

so ummm

I bought Flex Mentallo off the comixology sales

I think I was just told why I love comics. It was was kinda beautiful.

I reread it ever year, and it's definitely towards the top of my list for Most Important Comics.

I used to really like David Brothers' analogy of Flex Mentallo being the wake, after Watchmen was the funeral for the Superhero:
"DKR is the blaze of glory. It’s a revitalization before death. Watchmen is the autopsy. At the end, there are no secrets. What’s Flex Mentallo? It’s a wake, that time when everyone gets together, gets drunk, and talks about the deceased."
I don't know that I still like the analogy that much, but it's definitely interesting, and Flex Mentallo is definitely a celebration of sorts.
