Log Horizon Season 2, Episode 5

One of my favorite parts of Log Horizon is seeing this series twist MMORPG tropes and reintegrating them under vastly different circumstances.
Indeed, this episode we finally get the full on details on the Royal Guard. Once they were just the automatic defense mechanism to prevent PVP but now they have a history, a deep connection to the city, and profound ties to the Kunie Clan. This also presents a most vexing problem, how do you kill somebody who has cloaked themselves in the mantle of something that was literally designed to be more powerful then you? I am digging some of the chracter growth they are giving to Akatsuki, but she is also kind of suffering from Mikasa syndrome. I get it, you want Shiroe staff, please stop reminding me. More enjoyable has been the further characterization of Lenessia and surprisingly Soujirou. At any rate, we are finally at one of the spots compromised by Episode 1 and it looks like Shiore and Akatsuki are going to let what dreams may come for a little bit.

Huh. Interesting. So it seems that
Akatsuki died due to the invincible assassin and Shiroe died alongside the raid team due to a massive wipe when they fucked up in the boss battle
. Nice to see the author is going full-on mechanics with the raid haha. Decent episode, still not what I like about the show but seems like next episode we'll have more Shiroe. That's all I wanted.

hmm wonder if this was the
first time Shiroe and Atkatsuki has died since they've been trapped. Curious how much time passes between respawns since those scrubs that died on the first few raid bosses seemed to instantly teleport to the entrance

Log Horizon Season 2, Episode 6:

You know, pretty soon we are going to need the Game of Thrones map to keep tabs on what everyone is doing at any given time if this keeps up.
The world building, my god, the world building might just be what puts this title over the top on the AOTY list this year. Log Horizon understands something that once again Sword Art Online paid lip service to but never actually understood. The world of Elder Tale is not a static one and the time duration problem is indeed only going to get bigger the longer The Adventurers are trapped on this plane. Also, we get confirmation that other changes are taking place from the subtle, like right before Crusty got sucked up by a portal to hell was picking up on the fact that The Goblins are getting smarter. We get much more obvious detailing since The Adventurers are actively seeking answers about the world and I think they were pretty much confirming that Tetra is or was a guy. The transgendered characters of this universe are very intriguing idea now that the duration factor is being applied to them as well as possible future moral quandaries. I also liked we can see how powerful the so called world event magic really is, as I recall cooking is still one of the most radical discoveries ever ushered in by the Adventurers and we can see the extent of how much has changed as now even basic Adventurers can prepare basic good tasting meals without the Cooking skill. I makes me wonder if things like the world getting bigger or the flavor text becoming important are not also Adventurers mucking about with the world? Oh, yes, we see the land of the dead and we learn that the literal cost of revival is real world memory fragments and we do not know why yet. Also, shit seems to be going south everywhere and Akatsuki has learned to trust in the heart of the cards.

Okay, I'm back on board. One of my favourite things is explaining the intersections of video game mechanics and the real-virtual world.

When you
die in a raid in MMO, you don't respawn at your usual respawn point, but at the start of the raid level. The difference between what the current raid team is able to do is leave the raid boss to recoup. Normally you wouldn't be able to just retreat, to restart the raid you would have to wipe, aka full team down.

S2 E6

Things everywhere are heating up now. I'm actually pretty excited about some of the new developments we got this episode.
Purgatory for these characters between death and respawn, the growth of the world itself, the changes to NPCs and characters alike, and the things that didn't seem to matter before having an actual impact.
Seriously, this show continues to grow and grow on me.

I have a theory about the current developments and their impact on the world of Elder Tale. FYI, I have not read any of the light novels.
Elder Tale is becoming an actual living replacement world for the adventures. The growth of the world itself to match 1:1 with the world they know, the removal of old memories, permanent changes to characters based on their in-game sex vs their real world counterpart, and flavor text having actual meaning. The game, or whatever force that is driving this, is turning Elder Tale into some sort of parallel world for those trapped. I'm guessing that if this does last longer, additional effects that mirror the real world will start to bleed in as well.

Man, such a great episode. Now I want to know what the flavour text on that weapon is! I suppose it'll be revealed next ep haha.

I love this show so much.
As someone who
normally has female secondary characters, the thought of not only being trapped in a world as one but slowly completely turning into that character
is a weird thought.

Everytime I watch it I want to go back to FF14(however it reminds me more of Star Wars Galaxies which is dead sadly)

Right, but in previous episodes when they showed people dying in the raid , they showed up right outside of it.

That being said, this was a pretty nice episode, nice world building and finally some character growth and some twists. Based on the preview for next week,
wonder if they are going to do an all female easy raid to teach akatsuki about raiding?

This show would easily go up a few esteem levels if the cringe worthy dialogue was addressed. This is the first show I have to make the complaint that they don't talk like real people and I didn't flip my shit like this over Gundam Wing. It's really jarring sometimes.

I actually like some of the characters (in addition to the world building), but not the way they talk to each other.

Tbh I find this about a lot of modern anime. But it hasn't bothered me too much in log horizon.

just wish there was more shiro action this season. Pretty much the rest of the cast is pretty dull/generic.

It seemed like they were going to be alternating between scenes from a Shiroe focused one and a Akatsuki focused one, but ever since last episode it seems like they went mostly Akatsuki only. I guess we'll probably get the Shiroe side after she's done with this story. I don't think they'd just skip it.

Wait, what?

Where's the evidence for Tetra being a guy?
I think I completely missed that.

It's kinda of odd that out of everyone in the entire city and all those guilds, there are no other guys that are the same class as shiro.

Those binding skills would probably do wonders against murderer man.

Spoiler about stuff the show hasn't even talked about yet regarding the scene about genders.

I don't think it had anything to do with it. Just moving things along that direction. The only reason I know the truth is because people spoiled it in thread awhile back.

It isn't that odd, as I understand it Shiroe's class is the hardest to master.

They're probably focusing on Akatsuki's story now, since Shiroe's story was actually written later in the following volume.

Although I really do want to get back to him, what's going in the raid during this same period of time is actually far more interesting than what we've actually been shown thus far.

I liked this episode more than the others so far just because we're learning how the game world is now changing and adapting to the adventurers who are also being affected. Wonder how long until revivals no longer apply to the players if it goes in that direction.

I've been wondering this since the first episode and I'm disappointed it still hasn't been addressed in earnest.

Are these people not interested in returning to the real world?

Are these people not interested in returning to the real world?

At first they had no idea how to escape this new realm and have been dealing with the business of adapting and surviving. They still have no idea how to escape but the series has been subtlety showing that actual interest is on the wane because when you die you lost memory fragments and the memories being lost are those of the former self. It is an interest that is gradually being hammered out of The Adventurers.

I've been wondering this since the first episode and I'm disappointed it still hasn't been addressed in earnest.

Are these people not interested in returning to the real world?

They have no known way to return, or any kind of objective placed in front of them that can be accomplished to allow them to return. There wasn't a game master giving them a big quest to return home or anything, they just woke up there.

The way Log Horizon handled their initial reaction from being separated from home wasn't good and was one of the show's biggest flaws (we should have seen these glimpses of the real world in their memories in the beginning of season 1, not only now), but the sense of hopelessness and lack of direction that the Adventurers in Akihabara had in the first few episodes after that seemed pretty spot on for people in that situation after a while. After they got over that thanks to Shiroe's efforts they started focusing on their new goals in this new world.

There's also the element mentioned in this newest episode about everything changing to fit that world. From male and females in gender swapped characters being adapted to fit their characters' gender, even changing their personality apparently, and monsters starting to act more like living beings. It seems like everything in Elders Tale is slowly becoming more like a natural part of that world. Death erasing their memories of Earth also seems to line up with that, since it basically slowly makes their lives in Elders Tale the one they'll remember the most.

Besides everything else, Elder Tale wasn't a VR game originally, so this isn't a "locked in a VR set" situation, at least from their point of view. I guess they could still pull a "memory erasing" twist later, if they really try to go with everything being VR but, at this point, I think going with a fantasy explanation seems much more likely than a sudden switch to sci-fi.

I had similar theories on the memory erasing being the cause for their seeming disinterest in getting out of the game and back to the real world, but what I was getting at was the fact how they all adapted quickly to living inside Elder Tale and then just stopped. I'd figure we'd at least see the panic in others if not the unflappable Shiroe. You'd think especially after they got things settled that Akihabara that they would be more focused on getting out of the game than dealing with the People of the Land, or at least divert some resources and occasionally catch us up on what they were doing.

It's a minor complaint, I suppose. I still very much enjoy the anime. It doesn't seem to have half the budget SAO enjoys but it's much better written and the characters are all the more interesting and likeable.

The main issue is that there's a total lack of goal post to "return home". There isn't some kind of lofty mission placed in front of them with a promise to return home or hints of ways to travel to other worlds or just "log off" from the game somehow. People can't really dedicate themselves to something so vague. I don't think that part is really odd. I think the main issue was actually their initial reaction, not how they followed things afterwards.
