Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

How does progression work in this game? Gear and stat increases as you level up?
You can research gear upgrades, and later on there are also branching upgrade paths and you can select the equipment for each character. Also, tank upgrades are interesting as you have limited space and can only take a subset with you at once.

Stat increases / leveling is on a per-unit-type basis, not individual characters (which is a very good thing in my opinion).

I'll have absolutely zero free time to play this, but for 14 bucks I'll just consider it a message to Sega. Bought and redeeming on steam now.

Well, I can't imagine the English font happens to include all the extra quirky european symbols, so I guess it'd be both, but mostly the text itself. The fact that the game was English-only has always been a bit of a thorn in the flesh in Europe, so it'd be nice if it were fan-translation friendly.

Well, I don't wanna jump the gun here but considering a fan-translation for VC3 on PSP exists and PC is slightly easier to get going with that kind of stuff...

Oh, sure. It's just in case the devs went crazy and included all the text in a .csv file or something similar, which would make it extremely easy to translate.

I had a quick look for you, and it doesn't seem like it's that simple. Still, the game doesn't have just a single monolithic resource file, so that's something.

Is there permadeath when characters die in combat?

Is text stored in ASCII or some form of compression?

Re: permadeath, once your selected unit gets downed, you have three full turns to rescue him/her (get another unit to him) before death. If Welkin's tank asplodes, that's game over.

Haha, I guess it was too much to hope for. Thanks! We'll see, then, but for this game it should be well worth the effort.

EDIT: I think the main characters can't die, but you lose their extra turn, which hurts quite a bit more. But yeah, it's really rare for that to happen in the normal game.

Fan-game incoming.
Even if there isn't modding support, fans will figure out how best to hack and insert new resources for their benefit. Nonaka and Tanaka mention in the art-book interview that player-driven experiences were given more attention with VC than is normal for SEGA games (at least design-wise), so I don't believe they'd mind us changing the game up for posterity. We might even hack the PSP games' assets into CANVAS on PC if SEGA doesn't want to port the sequels.

Not sure about porting the sequels to VC1PC - they're different enough in framework and structure that asset porting isn't going to cover any significant amount of ground.

Well listening to how people describe it makes me not interested in the sequels. Sounds like they're anime trope garbage.

They're solid gameplay experiences
as long as you have a mild tolerance for grinding

Granted, after the extremely well done overarching narrative of VC, it's rather disappointing to sit through VC2's setting.

Can you tell if the game still uses CRI containers for datafiles?
For example PS3 version had all the music stored in VLBGM.AFS totaling ~285 MB of CRI ADX files.
The store page mentions CRI Middleware, but I'm curious whether the porting studio went with original ADX files from PS3 release ('(c)CRI' somewhere in file beginning), or if they upgraded to HCA (HCA string at offset 0x00)?

And FYI, AFS containers are well documented and have a plethora of extractors/repackers available.

One mod idea that might work: a map pack where you play from the side of the Empire in missions featuring Triumviri commanders (Radi, Gregor, Selvaria, even Maximillian). The spots for militia units would be replaced with Imperial soldiers (maybe one or no potentials, fixed gear and stats), and commanders' potentials would be modified for greater frequency. Given how the game's designed, this would allow for more hero (villain?)-based play, and I really just want to play as Jaeger in the two battles at Vasel Bridge.

I forgot - Are battle potentials and personal potentials separate in this game (IE, 4 personal, 4 battle), or was that introduced in VC2 and each character has only 4 potentials?

The second is the one that fell off. Everything else is inferior to the first game except maybe the gameplay because of a few good ideas. I'm sure all you'd need to hear is a general summary of the setting and story and you'd probably want to just call it a day at that. The only good thing about VC2 is Edy's sister.

The third game however is very interesting. You play as a special forces penal battalion that basically do black operations for Gallia during the events of the first game (VC3 runs parallel to VC1. In fact the VC1 cast appears in VC3). It felt like they combined what was good with VC1 and VC2 and just put them together. You also face off against another special forces Imperial army which is also very interesting in itself (a "Darcsen" elite Imperial army I think).

My personal favourite thing about VC2 was the squad interaction, and how if you brought certain squad members along with you to battle multiple times you'd progress in their 'social link' of sorts. Eventually at some point you gain access to squad member missions centered around that persons backstory. That was the BEST thing in my opinion to come out of VC2, and it is something they included in VC3. It was their way at getting you attached to your squad members, and I thought it was very effective, especially since they get gameplay boosts (new 'potentials'). There were some characters that had negative 'potentials' that hampered their performance, but after doing their squad missions they would overcome that negative potential and it'd be replaced with a positive one.

Well I'm hoping GeDoSaTo works so I can set the prompts back into the style of the game in certain areas like the PS3 versions. I don't like how they just slapped the generic prompts into there too much.

Something else worthy of a mention: loading times on my machine were practically non-existent.
lol, I guess they don't exist after all.

Excellent to hear about this being a quality port (though a few more graphics options would make it better). Better yet, they acknowledged the petition right at the top of the page, without snark!

Looks like someone's already put up a review article for the PC port.

BEST GAME EVER

... I feel very confident in the fact I bought the game, and it is sitting on my HDD waiting for November 11th now.

I can't believe Sega hit a good one with this PC port. For all the times Sega decides to fuck me over (Yakuza pls), when they do do something right eventually they do it well. Well that and I don't think Sega is really ignorant when it comes to the PC platform. They also technically own 2 of the few living RTS franchises (Company of Heroes, Total War). Hell Sonic Allstars was pretty good on PC as well from what I've played

I'm just getting giddy at the fact that I'm taking my favourite PS3 games, and somehow making it look BETTER than it already is.

I suppose there's one more good tidbit.

He's getting solid 60 on an AMD GPU. Was afraid that this game would be heavily Nvidia biased thanks to it using Nvidia GameWorks middleware (Or whatever it was called back in 2008).

What jumped out at me was the excellent performance on a moderate system. The game isn't very graphically intensive, but seems to be well optimized.

What I am able to confirm is that everything, cut-scene movies and gameplay, stuck to a smooth 60 on my machine (i3-2100/8GB/2GB HD 7870) with the ‘refresh rate’ option selected.
