Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Do get to keep my GAF credibility if I buy this, finish the story, and then sell it to fund a new Dualshock 4 (that I badly need)?

Is there ANY chance at all that Ubi will fix these frame rate problems in the near future?

Or will this be a case of, 'sorry suckers we got your money. See ya for next years release,'

When AC3 came out, I thought "What a mess, but it could be great once they patch all of these obvious bugs." It seemed like an obvious thing they would simply have to do, to mitigate damage and tarnish to their flagship franchise's image.

But they never did fix those bugs.

AC Unity frame rate nightmare X1: http://youtu.be/-YdgnxdzE5g

I recorded this a moment ago

That's more than just dropping frames. That reminds of the stream on Friday showing the awful co-op session, it ended with all four guys climbing the highest tower in the area. When they all four got to the top, one guy was experiencing major frame rate holocaust just like that, but the other three guys were fine. It's a bug beyond a mere frame hit.

I got this with my Xbox Bundle. Was really the only option as I had no interest in a white console.

But I definitely had high hopes given what a complete heel-turn Black Flag seemed to be. This sounds like something of a disaster. A real shame that the AC series and Ubisoft can't be trusted to make consistently good products.

Videogamer bought their own copy for CoD:AW. I don't understand this embargo talk if you can get around it and if you really care about your readers specially with a technical mess like this one.

Shit....I was actually really excited for this....evrything they said sounded great.....was going to be my first Assassins Creed since the first one (I actually loved the first, played about an hour of two and realized it was the same damn thing and never looked back)

Yeah this isn't the game's fault, you just have too many dust bunnies in your console's fan. Just grab a can of compressed air and blow those suckers out. If you're not familiar with dust bunnies they look like this:

This has given me more enjoyment than unity

true story

I'm not pissed at review sites wanting to post reviews. If they want to follow the embargos, more power to them.

I thought it was silly of Gies to say within 2 tweets that you do not get as many readers to read reviews that are posted late, so they are going to post them as soon as they are allowed, thus following the embargoes (and getting more readers =clicks), but then saying they are doing it to better server their readers. It is flat out to better server Polygon, not the readers.

I get that its PR, but in a way Gies is right. I'd rather my review site of choice review a game than not review a game... regardless of the dubious practices of the publisher.

Are you fucking serious?

It's getting much higher scores than it deserves. They should be punishing it for anti-consumer practises and being a shoddy product.

Who cares about metacritic, God Hand and Nier also have a mediocre average on Metacritic, yet they are my favorite video games of all time.

Quoted for truth. Make up your own opinion of a game.

I finished Shadow of Mordor, but that game is more repetitive than mowing the lawn. I still enjoyed it, but nowhere near close to it's Metacritic.

Watch Dogs got bad scores due to simply being a bad game, not technical issues. I haven't even heard anything about the actual game part of Unity yet.

That's a good point. But tbh I'm exhausted in general by the annualization of this franchise, so tech stuff aside, unless the gameplay is getting a major shot in the arm its a bad game to me.

Do you guys think they'll be able to fix these issues with patches?

Technically yes. Give them enough time and programmers and they'll be able to do it. Anything is possible with enough time.

But you know what? Time costs money. People cost money. This game is going to sell like hotcakes no matter what. People love their yearly AC game. I dated a girl once that never fired up her xbox, EXCEPT for whatever AC game Ubi put out. They don't really care, they'll make their money either way.

I'm debating cancelling it or holding onto it until the return window is up, ordered it at a good discount

Same boat as you, my friend. I pre-ordered, because really love the french revolution and thought it would be amazing to get to play in that setting. I was also kinda excited about a good "old fashioned" AC game without boats and fleet missions. Just a well realized city, a cool coming-of-age story, and some amazing architechture. I was pretty much happy with that, combined with the improved free running.

However, it's the terrible technical stuff that's making me want to return it.

is there anything else you are looking forward to?

Personally I was blown away by how good sunset overdrive is. Had a ton of fun with shadow of mordor. I loved PS3 GTA V so really looking forward to PS4 version, DA has great reviews.

Unity might have been acceptable if they launched in a vacuum but to me other games over delivered where unity disappointed,

For the past year I have learnt to never ever pre order a game again

Battlefield 4 online issues
Drive Club online issues
Halo MCC matchmaking issues
TitanFall overhyped
Watchdog's overhyped
Destiny overhyped with a review embargo after release

I have learnt to not ever buy a game on launch or pre order. Wait for reviews and also wait for impressions on bugs and online issues.
You could always trust Platinum. >.>

Agreed. Every game I've been excited about has fallen flat.

Only GTAV (hopefully) can save us now.
The WiiU has been saving us but nobody pays attention just because it doesn't have 8GBs of GDDR5 RAM.

I have a bunch of PS+ games to play, and Mordor to finish up, and I haven't played the last 2 BF4 expansions yet, and I might get the Destiny expansion

I don't have any other pre-orders until February I think

I went to Best Buy and changed my preorder deposit from Unity to Dragon Age. Lady said you are like the 9th person who has changed their Unity preorder or cancelled it today lol.

The key lesson we can take from all of this is to support Nintendo, a company that puts gameplay first and never (don't quote me) releases a half-arsed product.
