Bungie should make Destiny 2 look like the original concept art. (opinion)

So I've been playing tons of Destiny since launch. I personaly love it, and have spent more hours than I care to mention fighting Atheon in the Vault of Glass and running Nightfall Strikes. One thing that keeps bothering me though is I wish Bungie had capitalized on their original vision of Destiny. The original concept art looked like an amazing fusion of high fantasy and sci - fi and could have made for some breathtaking visuals.

Most areas in the game are just large open / empty expanses and lack the character the original artwork had. Also Bungie talked about the game having a sense of wonder and discovery, something the final games visuals lack in my opinion. The games tagline was Become Legend and I think adding some fantasy elements to the visuals would have helped a lot in driving home that feeling.

Better than the uninspired garbage with got with the original Destiny.

I would wholly support a direction change for the series, even in just it's art.

I want the tower to fall due to a war between the factions. Then have those factions scatter and form new alliances.

Also, I want the concept art look as well.

I laugh every-time I see those images. We want to make something different they said. We are tired of making Halo they said. Goes on to make Halo Call of Duty in space.

The issue I see here is that the topmost image looks decidedly different in setting from the bottom three images. The top image has large mechanized walkers and a brutalist, hard sci-fi look, whereas the images below it are decidedly more swords and magic high fantasy stuff.

So Destiny is a marriage between the two, while still leaning heavily on the clean architectural styles of the Covenant and Forerunner stuff, I feel. I think it looks great. The concept art looks great too, but I think those were used early, more in discovering what Destiny has come to look like now.

Is the third pic showing a warrior, a healer, and a mage???? This looks like a completely different game, tbh...

Yeah the art style of the game at some point during development changed drastically. It lost most of its fantasy / sci fi inspiration and instead become mostly just sci fi. I know they won't go full on fantasy like this originally was but I really hope they at least bring some of it back.

A lot of the armour still has high fantasy elements to it, I think. Stuff like capes, royal emblems and crests, and so on.

Part of me wonders if Bungie wanted to risk doing 3rd person combat for stuff like melee with swords and the like, when they're at their best doing 1st person combat with (for the most part) projectile-based weapons.

That art looks like a totally different game from what Destiny is right now :(

Hopefully GG's game is close to the art they released.

The stark differences are what I love about the early art. It was like the futuristic world we had built fell and that the world and its planets were reverting into some ancient fantasy stuff. I think that was their original vision.

Bungie has always had amazing concept art, going back to the Marathon days.

I still think the scope of Destiny got held back way too much because of its cross-generation aspect.

So you ate saying they basically threw out the original concepts alltogether.

:(

More like they realized they had a constrained time schedule as well as hardware limitations of past systems to design for. Really really hope Destiny 2 is current gen+pc only.

basically. destiny is the most uninspired shooter ive ever see

If you are talking in terms of graphics I would disagree and point you towards medal of honor or homefront. If you are talking in terms of gameplay I would again disagree and point you towards anyone of the multitude of stock standard FPS games that were prevelant last gen. Homefront, Medal of Honor, MW3 etc. So I'm not really sure what you are talking about. If you say story again I would say it is not good but not the worst. The extended reading through grimoire cards actually has some excellent backstory that is baffling as to why they did not integrate it into the game. But regardless there are much worse examples.

I would go so far as to say that Destiny is the best FPS I have ever played but that is due to my lack of experience in the genre. The FPS I have played are Blops 2, Battlefield 4, Bad Company (Probably Second on my list), Homefront (rental), MW2 (Third). Oh and Bioshock Infinite.

I almost forgot about Destiny... I should really try again to enjoy it.

I'd love to see a big-budgeted developer create a game in the same art style as OP's images. Those images are pretty breathtaking.

That's what destiny was supposed to look like?! I'm so disappointed it didn't turn out that way. There could have been so many things to make the world feel more alive. Destiny feels so dead outside hub area. Man that concept art looks sweet. The frog one looks like survivors making it outside the walls of the tower. They could have been the nomad/drifters/hunters. It would have been so awesome if you started in different places depending on class. Warlocks and titan founded the tower in lore.

Its more like 'we want creative freedom because we are sick of Halo, so we left MS and signed a 10yr contract with Activision to make Halo the MMO.'

Nothing about leaving MS made any sense considering what they went on to do.

Bungie should make an actual shooter instead of a glorified gear treadmill with guns.

They did make a good shooter, its more like everything else that was garbage. The shooting mechanics is the only thing that is really well done about the title itself.

Dear god does most of the gear look like ass, for whatever lacking amounts of gear there is.

All I'm getting from OP is you want a Vaseline shader on the entire game. The art style isn't much different, outside from what you linked being drawn and this not as sharp.

Even beyond that, there's a pretty wide range of looks in your post. The first and third are pretty different especially.

What? Destiny looks nothing like this.....like at all.

Also the whole point of the original art style was huge differences in style. It was going to have both hard sci fi looking stuff and high fantasy.

You should know that op is pretty much talking about the content of those pieces of concept art and not the painting style.

Concept art looks original and amazing. Add a fantasy aspect to sci-fi? Yes please.

What we got was an unispired Halo-esque style with boring enemies and a couple of good-looking, but rather generic regions to explore.

Go back to the concept art and we can start talking about the road to redemption Bungie.

Come on now.

World of Warcraft made a similar art direction revamp with their first expansion. They went from traditional fantasy in vanilla to demons and sci-fi in Burning Crusade, and it was awesome.

I totally agree. The concept art above has character. What we got is some bland art and no characters or cool monsters. The enemies look like Halo rejects. I want creatures populating the world and fantasy. I don't need it to be "realistic" like Call of Duty.

Those images look so much better than what we got. Like a poster said the game really does feel like a mix between COD and Halo. So glad I traded it in.

I would go so far as to say that Destiny is the best FPS I have ever played but that is due to my lack of experience in the genre.

Jesus Christ. At least you say you have a lack of experience in the genre. Still, Destiny is nowhere near the top 100 best FPS' of all time.

The problem is Destiny is still a huge financial success, there is no incentive for them to change stuff to make it better.
Yeah, but will those people come back for the 2nd unless there are big changes made? I can't see Destiny 2 maintaining 70% of its audience if they don't make stark changes.

They got much higher sales and a larger cut of the pie of those sales.

I love the style of that original artwork (and I'd personally rather play that game), but I have to say, I don't think the market would respond the same way.

Uninspired? The visual design of Destiny is extremely well done. What are you on about?

You've played 100 FPS'?

I am also largely inexperienced. Damn haha

I played a shit ton of FPS' and RTS' when I was younger. Really the only genres I played for awhile (you could throw some SSB and Madden in there as well).

edit: 100 might be too big of a number if we are talking pure mechanics though.
