Ex-Bungie artist plagiarizes art for marathon (Up: Bungie confirm, offer to do right by the original artist)

Sad story. Come here for pitty? you need a hug?

"I don't care about the thing, so no one else can care about the thing either!"

Walk away from the keyboard, my guy.
People are free to care about it.

My comments were aimed at 2 specific people who believe I'm on some Woke-crusade or whatever.

But if people butt in, then it probably looks like I'm going against everyone.

The point SJRB SJRB and KyoZz KyoZz both made is that you entered this thread just to say you don't care, and that's not productive or helpful. You also followed-up with this gem:

It is funny, because why do others care if it doesn't affect them in any way?

I just don't understand what you're doing in this thread.

KyoZz KyoZz is one of the two people I mentioned.

And since a certain group of Gaffers labeled me a defender of Marathon, I just prefaced my initial reply by stating that Idc if Bungie gets into trouble over this (as I was replying to someone who mentioned the 'defenders').

In the very same post, I stated that Bungie should offer compensation to the artist and compensate her (I automatically assumed it was a him, as 'artist' translates to 'kunstenaar' in Dutch, the word for a male artist).
I just don't understand what you're doing in this thread.
As I stated above, I was saying Bungie should correct their mistake.

Certain people just decided to focus on me ultimately not caring about Bungie getting into trouble or who makes the art.

Where's the plagiarism? There must be hundreds of other arts from hundreds of other artists with the same style. Heck, probably the one claiming theft has done the same to the others.

they literally have the artists fucking own "brand" logo in there...

How can I tell you that it is not about you, what you think, or what you believe? Your dismissal or downplaying of this situation is not only irrelevant but inconsequential.

Bungie is facing catastrophic PR. it's even more funny when this company praises itself as being an ally, inclusive and representative, Pride flags, trans flags and all that bullshit

Bungie seems to have a track record of this. When caught they throw a few bucks their way.

I'd be a dick and say no rip it all down to cost them more money to redevelop.

The only reason these big corporate studios get away with this is because their legal teams can cover their asses and beat smaller and less known artists without much hassle. Have to give credit to the guy, I dig the designs. Wasn't aware I was actually praising it indirectly through positive impressions about the game's visual aesthetics.
A smart lawyer should take the job, if you are capable it should not be hard to prove plagiarism and get a couple of millions from sony.

The whole situation is disgusting.

that a former Bungie artist included these in a texture sheet that was ultimately used in-game.

I like how they deflect to the "rogue employee" narrative, despite multiple artists, including Joseph Cross, all have followed this artist with no communication for years.

The repeat offenders:

so at this point Bungie should be smart enough to not outsource and art to some contract workers right? and just have internal artists they trust.

unless of course that it was always their internal ones that are the issue.

It's an insult to one's intelligence to suggest all this is caused by one employee who secretly lifted all these assets. The plagiarism is so deeply engrained in every aspect of the game (textures, logo designs, interface, visual design, aesthetics, etc) that saying this was an oopsie by one employee that just went by everyone unnoticed is comically absurd.

All the more because like five people from the dev team followed the person who made the original artworks.

Saying it was done by one employee makes the whole thing even worse because everyone can see that's just not true.

lol are you serious?

Yeah buddy, "Aleph Dark-Space haulage logistic". Such a natural and common phrase that's probably used by hundreds of artists lol.
They didn't "take inspiration" from someone else's art to make something similar, they straight up just took their stuff and put it in the game.
That's actually the name that elon chose for his son with grimes before switching back to X Æ A-12.

Yeah, but let's be real, its not like people were high on Marathon's art-style in the first place. So basically it strikes me as a lot of people being performatively offended on behalf of somebody who under other circumstances they'd happily be ambivalent about or even rip into.

Its a familiar story, and sorry to say "sticking it to the big bad corpo devs" is pretty much adjacent to all other forms of pearl-clutching slacktivism, especially those favoured by the wokerati.

I'm sure pointing this out is going to rattle some cages, but zero fucks given here.

Its not about whether people are allowed to "care", its entirely reasonable to question the sincerity of the motivation behind why they care. Because in most cases I don't buy it, especially when this place is hardly a hug-box for devs :D
People like to vent, and that's fine. What gets on my tits is the moral grandstanding.

I'd assume Joseph Cross has to have known or been contributing as well. How can he be the art director who leads the vision, follow the artist, but be unaware? The apology just upsets me more than no apology at all. Now on top of plagiarism, they're betting that gamers are too dumb to connect the dots.

This is a huge scandal, and the sad part is there are a lot of people who are going to suffer for it who probably really don't deserve to. It's not like the whole company was sitting around a table, nodding in agreement and grinning shark smiles while some shadowy figure says "We're gonna steal this guy's artwork so hard."

On the other hand, it's a pretty shit "art" style, in my totally professionally unprofessional opinion. It's like getting nicked for stealing a pack of bubblegum. I mean, it's just a corn syrup slurry nowadays - doesn't even have real sugar.

What a complete miss this is. The whole sorry thing.

EDIT IN RESPONSE TO ABOVE: "Here, boss, like these designs? I cranked them out after a brainstorming sesh. Look, sharp colors, lots of numbers, looks busy."
"Nice! It's poppy, it's eye-catching! Let's go with more of this!"

Not saying it's what happened, but it's possible that a lot of people just fell for one guy's (or maybe a couple of guys') deception. Or maybe they're all crooks. That's possible too.

Art is like music. there has been so much m Ade that's it is nearly impossible to not recreate something someone else has made before.

no, that's not true.

Music is 12 notes which flow through a piece of wood, or a piece of metal, or a computer, or a string, or the human voice. That's it. By contrast, art is limitless. But even with music, you can usually tell when someone rips off someone. I remember the first time I heard The Doors' "Five to One" and instantly knew where Pearl Jam's "Alive" solo came from. And sure enough years later, I read an interview with the Pearl Jam guitarist, and yep, he ripped it off lmao. Actually I think he said he ripped it off from some Kiss song, and the guitarist for Kiss said he ripped it off from Five to One.

For year this was blatantly stolen, not just individual art bits but the entire look and feel.

So...is this still going to happen?

Honestly, if it does, it probably wouldn't be wise with the current drama going on. But they have delayed it once already, so they may want to just do it, lol.

I still can't believe they've had this problem more than once. They NEVER should've had this problem. The fact that any "artist" would think this is okay is absolutely baffling, lazy, and careless.

This wasn't remade. Many assets were stolen and used. Not their likeness, but a 1:1 copy.

Im just saying general.. someone was first to create a line. someone was first to create a check mark, a square, a smiley face, a peace sign, a futanari furry orgy scene ...
no one nowadays is ever first to create something truly new.

Nobody is arguing on who did what first. The headline is about PLAGIARISM, and a bad plagiarism at that.

Looking on the bright side, the harder those GAAS shitshows flop, the sooner we'll get back to big companies focusing on single-player games again.

I'm rethinking this whole thing, and in my opinion, it's all a machination by Bungie in order to postpone the game and, twist of fate, to be able to redo the graphical style from scratch or almost from scratch, since a lot of criticism is directed precisely at the graphical part (which really sucks, let's face it).
They found/invented an unknown designer, maybe one of their interns, and did all this hand-wringing to motivate the next postponement of the game.
Delay the game could help them, but I hope sony will cancel it.
