Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

This whole exchange had me in stitches.

"HUR DURR PEOPLE GET SO OFFENDED BY MINOR THINGS LIKE CALLING PEOPLE NAMES, WHINERS!! HURR DURR"

*ShockingAlberto points out a pattern in his posting*

STOP ATTACKING ME!!!! HURR DURR
...

Jesus, LOL

Oh don't worry, I was able to handle it. I didn't need to cry to the mods about it. It was just funny to see a bunch of holier than thou moral authority officers such as yourselves resort to personal insults. I thought you guys were above all that?

The fact that I was banned is even more laughable, the message I received from the mod is that I "supported rape." First of all, never ever did I say anything that supports rape. I don't fucking support rape (I mean, seriously?). All I was defending was uncensored trashtalk during competition. Just goes to prove my point that people are way too sensitive. I don't care if this thread is old and dead now, I'm going to stick up for myself since EVERYONE ELSE SEEMS INCAPABLE OF SUCH THINGS NOWADAYS.

You are really going to bump the thread that you got banned in? Really?

edit: With seemingly your first post post-ban?

There's a thing called respect and manners.
It's not about people being sensitive, it's about people being rude a-holes with poor manners

Dude... he probably forgot about this whole thing while you were writing and editing the draft for this post over the last 2 weeks.

I'm sorry but people are just wimps nowadays. Didn't like what he said? Either insult him back and beat his ass at the game, or stop playing because you obviously can't handle a little trash talk. HE CALLED ME NAMES, WAAAHHHH! DISQUALIFY HIM HE SAID MEAN THINGS TO ME IN A COMPETITION! WAAHHHH. Good lord. People all up in arms over a weak and uninspired insult, calling for a lifetime ban....now THAT is offensive. Pretty soon people aren't even going to be able to play around with eachother and say anything that could be considered offensive by anyone anywhere. Sounds like a real fucking boring world to live in.

Since this poster has apparently opened up their opinion for further criticism, how lacking in empathy do you have to be to think that "Don't publicly joke on social media that you're going to rape your competitor" is a slippery slope to "RIP trashtalk"?

I literally just came back since I was unbanned yesterday, saw his comment, and felt compelled to reply.

Hmm...

Maybe because...

That IS trashtalk.

"Some trashtalk is okay, but this isn't."

Sounds silly to me.

What's wrong with you? Do you finding using the 'N' word appropriate when "trash talking" as well?

Do you know how many times my black friends have called me (Danger)" "the N word" " <(Danger). It's just a word. Literally consists of the letters N, I, 2 Gs, an E, and R.

I'd argue that context matters, but in our society we seem to have lost the ability to understand context. Everything becomes an insult. Which leads credence to psychologists beliefs that the digital age is causing people to be unable to understand social ques from others.

Edit: This is damn near a Stone Age thread.

Whilst I'm reticent to involve myself in this thread again, I second the "context" portion of all arguments.

That's not defending the lad, and not saying what he tweeted was big and/or clever, but I think that this has turned into a bit of a witch-hunt in a scenario where context really is king.

Do me a favor, call random people on the street that word and let me know what happens. We'll see how that nonsensical "internet is making people weak" argument works out for you.

The girl he was saying he was going to rape wasn't his friend, and she found it inappropriate. It's not your place to tell people they shouldn't be offended by something. Jesus.

That "nonsensical argument" is backed up by numerous psychological studies and doesn't have many counterarguments by actual members of the medical community. Forum goers on the other hand..

If it's not my place to tell people they shouldn't be offended, then it must not be her place to tell him he is offensive. Who is she to construe any meaning into his words if he didn't intend them for her? Why can't we all just live inside some kind of social vacuum where no one has a place in any other people's lives? Oh, wait. Because we live in reality. Where context matters, and SJWs creep around ignoring it.

Also, to be honest, it'd probably work out pretty fine for me.

Edit: To be clear, his tweet wasn't exactly intelligent. I'm not justifying telling people you are going to rape them. Especially since he said "going to rape some girl". I am saying that he had a context, and getting banned from the tournament is pretty steep. I'm also saying people get way too offended and tend to take stuff out of context ESPECIALLY on the internet were they are more comfortable since they don't have to argue face to face.

To end, I imagine the girl wasn't overly upset about it. She did get a free pass through that match. Of course, we never make the assumption that the victim would never have any ulterior motives. Goes against common internet decency.

Did you even bother reading the OP? That tweet was intended for her. Just admit it, you just want to get away with saying anything on the internet without consequence. Your security blanket of anonymity isn't so safe anymore now that people have matured in age and sensitivity, leaving this kind of pig-headed bullshit behind and you with it.

So, again, with all your whining about the need to understand context, you sure don't seem to bother understanding it yourself. He said he's going to rape a girl. That girl was his opponent. She found that inappropriate. End of story.

To end, I imagine the girl wasn't overly upset about it. She did get a free pass through that match.

Un-fucking-believable.

Un-fucking-believable.

You have such a strong SJW shield up that your reading comprehension skills are failing a bit.Why does her opinion override his opinion? At which point does one person's opinion matter more than anothers?

And your ad hominum arguments are really sad.

Also, that last part still stands. How can you be 100% sure that she didn't see an easy way out of the match? You can't, but you'll take her side anyways despite not knowing anything about her personal moral character.

To play Devil's Advocate, the Tweet wasn't meant for her.

And we both know in this context that "rape" certainly doesn't mean the physical act.

Again, was it a boneheaded thing to put on Twitter by a "professional" player?

Certainly.

Should he have been pulled up and admonished for it?

Of course he should, no two ways about it.

Do I think that beyond that, all this has gotten a bit out of hand?

I do.

He stood up and apologised straight out, no excuses. Should he have lost his place in the competition? Perhaps. I'm a little 50/50 on that one. Probably.

Beyond that, I think the vitriol being spouted on here is getting a little too much.

So, let me get this straight:

1) she shouldn't have been offended by him saying he's going to rape her
2) she pretended to be offended to get "an easy way out of the match"
3) she probably deserved it because she has low moral character

4chan's that way, bro.

Common sense dictates that you don't publicly call a black person the N word, regardless of context, or tell a girl you're going to rape her, regardless of context. The punishment doled out was completely appropriate.

Rape as in going to own another player... otherwise wow...

Obviously. Most intelligent human beings understand that certain words are off-limits in certain contexts. Calling a female gaffer here a "cunt" is obviously a no-go, but apparently being offended by that is considered weak by some.

Good. I'm pretty sick of this shit. People just need to act civilized. Obviously, this wasn't a joke. It was a comment put out to social media that ended up biting him in the ass.

So she doesn't get to imbue any meaning on someone saying they're going to rape her, but it's fine for you to project meaning on her actions and speculate she's probably pleased he threatened to rape her.

Quit while you're behind.

That's an odd one, mind. Why the distinction? Some might be offended by that and think it was sexist...

Woah, woah, woah! That's what we call a "slippery slope"! It's a logical fallacy where you take something someone said pull it, say it with me, OUT OF CONTEXT, and extrapolate another meaning to it.

I never said she shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't be offended. I'm asking you where you draw the line on the importance of one human beings opinion over the other. Also, I would note the fact that you failed to answer.

Second, I never said she pretended. I said that it is an option you are 100% unwilling to consider. You are proving that point right now.

Third, this is a doozy. I think you might be having a problem reading my writing style! My apologies! I said that "YOU" don't know her personal moral character, and cannot be sure that she did not bring it up to get the match thrown. Just like I do not know her character and cannot 100% say she did not have a minor panic attack at the thought of being violently assaulted by her opponent.

And you finish with another ad hominem attack! I like that you stay consistent.

Who would mind that and find it sexist? Women?

I know women who would find the fact you made a distinction between calling a man a "cunt" and calling a woman a "cunt" sexist, yes.

Saying that, I do know some very scary women.

I do think it handily illustrates the point, though.

I tend to side with people who aren't throwing unwarranted hostilities and/or rape threats around.

Shouldn't be too hard to figure this out.

I specifically said women on this board, where we don't have personal relationships with each other for the most part, which is why I also said certain words are off-limits in certain contexts. I have women friends where I've said "Haha, you're such a cunt." But if someone they don't know call them cunts, it's fucking on. In this context, the guy doesn't know the girl and said some shit that he has no problem saying to his guy friends. It's just funny that some people on this thread are defending this guy on the basis of context, but the only context that matters is their own. Not talking about you, btw.

someone bump this thread in a year so we can have his ban reinstated.

not surprised to see so many guys try to justify his behavior... shameful shit.

A. He apologized. This implies that he did not really intend to rape her.
B. He's a pro gamer playing a match against another pro gamer. This adds further credence to the fact that he wasn't really going to rape her.
C. We all hopefully know he wasn't really going to rape her.

Also, it's important to note that he is from Ukraine, and potentially didn't realize that using such a term was going to turn him into an internet pariah! Not using it as any type of excuse, but he may not even be that familiar with the English language. I don't know him, so I can't make a judgement on that. This is what I mean by context.

Again, as I said before (it seems I have to reiterate quite a bit), what he said was stupid and he should have known better. But no one seems to be thinking anything more than "This guy is up in here trying to rape some people."

Oh totally, but it still stands as a point. I mean if you call anyone you don't know a "cunt" it's more than likely on.
What I meant was that, in the context (there's that word again, I know, apologies) of this messageboard, you've made a, perhaps, accidental distinction between calling a man a "cunt" and calling a woman a "cunt".
It could be construed as being chivalrous. It could just as easily be construed by some as being sexist.
However, we both know that you in no way meant it to be sexist, just as in no way did the young, very, very stupid lad mean "rape" in its base form.

Actually, just while we're on about it, I do find the term "retard" bandied about quite readily on these boards, and it's a word I find much more offensive than "rape". But, as I say, I know these people using it aren't meaning it in its base form.

That being said, I don't think a single person thinks that the lad shouldn't be held to account for it. It was stupid, it was unthinking, and it deserved a slap on the wrist and an apology. I just think people are running with the idea too literally and really blowing it out of proportion. This sort of fiasco is usually reserved for elected officials. ;)

Woah, woah, woah! That's what we call a "slippery slope"! It's a logical fallacy where you take something someone said pull it, say it with me, OUT OF CONTEXT, and extrapolate another meaning to it.

I honestly don't think you understand what context is at this point.

I never said she shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't be offended. I'm asking you where you draw the line on the importance of one human beings opinion over the other. Also, I would note the fact that you failed to answer.

The fact that you're entertaining the possibility of her being wrong for being offended is pretty telling.

Second, I never said she pretended. I said that it is an option you are 100% unwilling to consider. You are proving that point right now.

Why should that be an option I'm willing to consider? Does she have a history of stirring up drama to her benefit? Do you know her? What kind of diseased mind looks at this situation and says, "hmm...maybe she's pretending to take offensive to this to accomplish some goal of hers...I wonder." No, that's not what emotionally mature people do.

I don't need to know her personal moral character. If a woman says she's offended by someone tweeting they're going to rape her, even if it's figurative, there's no reason to think she's at fault. The problem you're having is that you're playing the cowardly and intellectually dishonest "But I'm just being objective" card here which is just a veil for "fuck this bitch for making me choose my words more wisely"

I've used the word "cunt" more in the space of an hour than I have done during the last four Sunderland matches in their entirety...

I don't need to know her personal moral character. If a woman says she's offended by someone tweeting they're going to rape her, even if it's figurative, there's no reason to think she's at fault.

You're... serious? Look, you win. I heartily apologize for "triggering" you or whatever. You don't even realize how sexist you are, do you? Just... keep on doing what you do, okay?

Actually quite enjoying this. It's turned into something of an existential philosophical debate. *snort*

Thank God that Frasier reruns start in 15 minutes or I'll never get to bed.

Well, I never said it was more okay to call a man a cunt than a woman. It's understandable, though, why that's the popular opinion. That word has a lot of baggage that comes with it simply because it's used to deride women. However, that's besides the point and just an example. Pick any number of other terms that are considered generally taboo. Retard is a good example. Would you say that to a someone with Downe's Syndrome? Would you say that to some random poster here? Like you said, context is key. I have a mentally-challenged cousin. Growing up, myself and his brothers called him "retard". Now that we know better, we have a completely different opinion of the word. Of course, it doesn't bother me when a group of friends say it as long as they're in that circle and take no offense to it, which is completely different than the context here where those two are complete strangers.

A. He apologized. This implies that he did not really intend to rape her.
B. He's a pro gamer playing a match against another pro gamer. This adds further credence to the fact that he wasn't really going to rape her.
C. We all hopefully know he wasn't really going to rape her.

This is largely irrelevant.

There is no context I can think of that makes it okay to say this to anyone, or about anyone. It's clearly understood that "rape" in this context is gamer trash talk. That doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid and shouldn't be said.

I'm just not sure why you are defending this, like there is ever an ideal time for saying "I'm going to rape someone". At best, it's juvenile stupidity and poor sportsmanship, and yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. It doesn't belong in organized play of any kind. They absolutely did the right thing.

In his defense (god help me) his grasp of English isn't that great and considering how casually some people use the word "rape" in gaming circles it can be easy to pick up bad language habits. Like how a lot of non-native speakers say "fuck" more than they should, and more than they'd curse in their own language. Of course that doesn't make it more okay, but he might not have fully realized what he was saying.

Even so, now he does fully realise and likely won't do something dumb like that again.

And to people saying they wouldn't care if it was directed at a guy: grow up.

There are plenty of other colourful expressions for "I'm going to beat you" and a whole host of ways you can trash talk without insulting somebody, regardless of gender.

As a guy, if a competitor said to me "I'm gonna rape you", he is at the very least immediately in the "not cool, man" territory. Even if I let it slide, the community at large is not that forgiving these days, so you just gotta learn to pick your words.

It's not necessarily a question of being offended. It just shows plain stupidity and a lack of respect for your fellow (wo)man.
